Another photoshop painting! (a scene from The Last Samurai)

Remember my attempts at painting on photoshop with my new (now an year old) drawing tablet? So I did a few more drawings after that which turned out pretty decent.

Then I was forced to take a big break as college work took over all my time. But before that I had managed to start a new painting as a tribute to one of my favorite movies of all time The Last Samurai (strange choice? maybe :P) So about an year later, I finally found the time and completed it! Here you go giantbombers :) (and thanks for all the help during my learning process!)

I think you could do with some deeper shadows, but I like the colours a lot. How hard is this on a tablet as opposed to a brush or a pencil?

Seeing how your abilities got better as I clicked through those examples made me wish I had kept my drawings from when I was a kid. When I was in the moment learning art, no matter how good I got my current art looked just as crappy to me as the first time I started no matter how much I was actually getting better. Being able to step back and see the progression of my skills would have probably helped me stick to it and not have had my love of drawing be crushed by school.

Very good! I really like the color palette.

It's things like this and all the great video game art I see on DeviantART that makes me wish I could draw. I've always sucked horribly at it. Are those drawing tablets worth picking up for someone who wishes to try and improve their drawing skills? It seems like a nice way to draw as much as you want without having to worry about getting more supplies/paper.

I would say you are doing considerably better. Keanu looks a bit too asian but it isn't a big deal since you seem to mostly draw.... asians. You are heading in the right direction to be sure, with more practice you will get even better.

One thing you might benefit from when working with a tablet is some non-standard, hard-edged brushes. Part of the reason I dislike digital painting rather than traditional painting is because it takes extra work to keep it from looking airbrushed (which comes from having round brushes with feathered edges, much like how an airbrush sprays).

As a result, if you're interested in making your work a little more "painterly" it might be worthwhile to try out some square brushes. This was just a quick search, but something like this might be interesting to play around with: http://cghub.com/scripts/view/92/

I mention this mostly because it looks like you've made a lot of improvements and you're probably close to hitting something of a "skill ceiling" using stock photoshop offerings. That said, nice job.

Pretty kickass. Also, The Last Samurai is an awesome movie.

A great painting, but I hate that movie with a passion.
