" I took 4 years of Latin in high school. Does that count? :P "So you can read the Latin edition of harry potter!

Currently learning Japanese using a modified "All Japanese All The Time" method. I'm focusing on Kanji first with the awesome book "Remembering the Kanji" by James W. Heisig. If you're interested you can find more info at www.alljapaneseallthetime.com
P.S. I didn't mean that to sound like advertisement. I'm just happy to have found a free, non-BS method that works for me.
I'm glad this thread has done fairly well. It's good to see so many giant bombers expanding their cultural horizons through a second language.
I agree it's a great idea to learn a second language, and Mandarin Chinese is definitely a unique one that not a lot of other people will have.
Personally, I took Spanish in high school for three years and cannot speak it. I can read and write it fairly well, but speaking it is really where I have huge problems. I've taken a semester in college, and am currently taking a second, but I'm still finding problems in speaking it consistently. The problem is likely that I don't actually practice speaking it on a regular basis.
I'm not learning a second language. However, I am taking a course right now to become certified in teaching English as a second language. Once that is completed I will be moving to a (most likely) non-English speaking country. I don't know where yet because I'm not done my course, but once I get there I will be taking a class tor something to learn the local language. I'm hoping to get a job in the Tokyo area so hopefully I end up learning some Japanese because of it.
