I'm just going to assume there's sarcasm there because I don't see how what I said could be considered misogynistic. Unless being tired of the same conversation in every single topic that involves a female, whether real or in a video game, is misogynistic considering there is no: hate, dislike, mistrust, or mistreatment of women coming from what I said. Unless you take 'devolved' the wrong way, at which point all I was saying is that this topic originally had nothing to do with sexism other than a guy being a dick and his target happening to be a woman. Then it quickly became a sexism debate/talk, which I've seen more than my fare share of since E3 and I'm just tired of seeing any topic that involves a woman, in any way, eventually becoming a topic entirely devoted to discussing sexism.

Well looks like Destructoid fired the guy for his personal opinion on Felicia Day.

I don't think you know what the word personal means.

It doesn't mean private. You can have a personal, public opinion. In fact, all opinions are ultimately personal.

@BionicRadd Maybe it's just because I've never really enjoyed her work (I enjoyed Dr. Horrible but not for anything the actors did... maybe NPH. Not her or Fillion), but I don't see anything different for saying that she's made it this far for her looks, and saying that Megan Fox or hell, anyone, is coasting on their looks. He's wrong, but that's the magic of opinions. He went about it rather crassly, and discovered the Internet is really just a big popularity contest. But "I don't think X deserves all the fame they get because Y" is maybe the most common complaint issued about celebrities on the Internet. And no one's even talking about that, instead it became another "women have to prove themselves more than men do!" issue.

I really don't know enough about Felicia Day to determine whether or not he's right about her, but I can determine that he's a bit of a cunt just based off what he said.

I live in TX. You can be fired because you came in one day with a funny hair cut. Employers here need absolutely no reason to fire someone. The only reason why you were fired matters is if it's something awful like theft, they can petition the state to deny you unemployment benefits. So, yea, I do not know how it works in other places, but where I am from, employers have the right to fire anyone they don't want working for them, anymore, for any reason or no reason, whatsoever.

That´s incredibly stupid. Employers cannot and should not do that. There are laws in other countries against that because they shouldn´t hire someone they don´t want in the first place. That´s why hiring interviews have certain guidelines. If someone fired me for making a very innofensive comment on twitter my lawyer would be all up in that shit.

Employee's in the US don't have the same rights they do elsewhere. Even in countries with stricter guidelines though, this wouldn't necessarily be unfair dismissal. He made several tasteless comments that reflect badly on the company as a whole, it's not surprising they want to distance themselves from the fallout. You could take it to a tribunal, but you'd most probably lose the case.

A newspaper or magazine journalist would have been fired for something like this just as quickly, in any country.

Here's the difference. Destructoid is an internet portal. When you're a journalist of any kind, your personal image is a reflection of not only yourself, but of the company you write for. If you don't agree with me, ask Don Imus. This isn't about "some job". He put himself and his twitter account out there as someone that represents Destructoid. I suspect that if you were on twitter representing your employer, publicly, they'd probably be watching your twitter account, closely, as well. By attaching your public image to their public image, it is your responsibility to never put yourself in a position where your public image becomes a detriment to their success.

With that said, again, he claims to have voluntarily severed ties with Destructoid, so this conversation is probably a little moot.

@WinterSnowblind: @BionicRadd: Ok I agree with you both on that his comments represent Destructoid and that they have the right to fire him. You guys are right, the only thing that bothers me though is that in that case, if you are part of an organization like that, you can´t express your own opinion. His comments aren´t THAT bad. He is just saying he doesn´t understand the appeal of Felicia Day. She is a horrible actress and a shame for any video game fan out there.

@Meowshi Absolutely, he does. But not 'you should expect to be fired if you call a celebrity talentless' is ridiculous. You should expect to be fired for reasons related to your job, not because you think Wil Wheaton is shit at his job. Or even if you think the guy flipping burgers at the restaurant across the street is shit at his job. I do find it funny that people in the games industry spend so much time talking awful shit about booth babes, saying they don't provide anything of value... That comparing anyone to them (or a glorified version of them) is considered the most vulgar thing possible. Wasn't that kind of his point? That he doesn't believe she provides anything more, but receives respect not commensurate with her contributions? Jim Sterling on the other hand, just takes refuge in audacity, as it's usually worked for him in the past. The worse he acts and the more people get angry, the richer and more secure he gets. I wonder if this will be any different.

You're underestimating how aggravated people are about how women are supposedly treated in the industry. People are very sensitive about this issue and a lot of them believe that when a woman shows even a vague interest in video games she is immediately treated with suspicion and accused of whoring out her gender. When people are upset, they make noise. In this modern age of social media, companies can pick up on that thing a lot quicker.

He's suffering for saying something stupid, and personally I don't see what's so sad about that. It was only a freelance gig, and according to him, he quit.

I stand as neutral when it comes to all of this.

  • I don't know who this guy is and he shouldn't have posted shit like that up. Unless he is trying to get fired from Destructoid.
  • What has Felicia Day into the gaming world, except for one voice acting appearance in a DA2 DLC?

Basically he went on a HUGE rant at his fans on twitter and had a complete meltdown that led to him being fired from TGWTG and burning nearly every bridge he could do. Thats just the abridged version of what happend, there was a lot more to it than that which is around the web if your interested. He's since been diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder.

I agree with Jaffe (I think) that she's a big girl and can respond or not respond as she sees fit, it's nobody else's business.

Jaffe is right. All of the people screaming to her defense seemed dumb. It actually to me almost seemed like a reaction based on her gender and the content of the Perez person's comments. I don't mean to imply that Day's defenders were sexist at all. I think they were, in the hearts, doing what they felt was right. But it just feels...well, it reminds me of a 'princess in distress' scenario. Day was unfairly characterized and everyone flew to her aid. It's hard to put in words it all just seems...weird. If I were in Day's place I might actually feel uncomfortable with all the defenders acting the way they did.

That said, Perez is still a massive idiot.

I think you're coming at this the wrong way. First, she implied that she's been getting more hate after this Destructoid guy said his stuff. So he's got his defenders as well.

Second, she was unfairly saddled with being in the gaming industry, and a face of it. A good size portion of her defenders realize this and want to make it clear not just to this guy but everyone else. Is that a sign of WhiteKnight-ism I don't know, but it's nice to see nonetheless. Like a bunch of people stopping the berating of two quarreling partners. Not to mention that we're both assuming everyone of her defenders are male, which, last time I checked Geek and Sundry skews female (insert unsubstantiated fact here).

I'm sure a lot of the people reacting are in the camp of wanted to help the 'princess in distress' as you put, but reverse the roles and we'd be calling the defenders of the hot gamer guy sexist for going after the girl instigator. In this case, I don't think it's a matter of sexism as much as prior twitter happenings (Mass Effect comes to mind).

Also, if I had an Army of people coming to my defense I wouldn't be uncomfortable, I'd be bolstered. Especially if I was a public figure considering it's my livelihood knowing I have a large following (this may or may not pertain to Felicia).

You and I just have a different way of looking at this.

She's an easy target for jaded dicks who need to prove how jaded and above it all they are because she's popular with geeks of both genders and she's also RELENTLESSLY upbeat and positive. Which is likely why a TORRENT of both regular folk and well-known writers/actors came to her defense, I don't think she has a single enemy in the industry (both videogame and acting). I'll give the dumbass credit, though, most people who write rants that are almost word-for-word exactly his don't do it directly AT her.

@Galiant Do you seriously believe he would have been fired if he said that Michael Pachter didn't contribute anything useful and was just an amusing personality? There would be a twitter argument, and nothing would come of it. There is no way he'd be fired for getting into an argument with a man. How many Kotaku writers have had fights with Jaffe? Over there it seems like its grounds for promotion. Ryan and Patrick read a tabloid article by Crescente and then said a bunch of shit about Jason Rubin, no one white knighted for him, and Ryan and Patrick never had anyone call for their jobs. I don't agree with the guy, and his booth babes line genders the argument, but I won't call black white because it suits my image.

Tell me where I said Michael Pachter? I said popular male within the industry...on par with how popular Felicia Day is, to clarify for you. Gender is irrelevant here, and yes, the guy would most likely get into equal trouble for unprofessionally calling someone useless and making other derogatory comments on Twitter.

Perez is an idiot and deserved to lose his writing gig (he's a freelancer, not a staff reporter fyi) w/ D-toid. He put something very stupid out on a public forum that created backlash and put his employer in a bad light. Dumb, dumb, dumb, and for a dime-a-dozen writer like Perez, that type of behavior will get you shit-canned from a job more often than not.

I don't know much about Day but I do know she puts out tons of video content and seems to genuinely like gaming (she's put more hours into Skyrim than me). So, she's made a career out of being a "cute geek girl" and that rubs some folks wrong. Maybe she's getting unfairly lumped in w/ the PSP lickers of gaming journalism. And yes, being a girl in the culture means she has to prove her 'nerd cred' to guys like Perez. I don't like throwing out the word sexist, but if it fits...Calling her a glorified booth babe is moronic, and Perez himself said he didn't research much about her before sending off that tweet.

It's Destructoid. There was a two month period where I checked them out but I stopped listening when their podcasts devolved into lets insult the minority member nonstop for two hours. I thought that was pretty telling of where their heart was at and being a minority, it wasn't something I could continue to support nor had the desire to.

The only positive thing I can say about them is that Jim Sterling is British, which means he has a cool voice. Also, his reviews have no level of objectivity and you'll never see him on some nonsense about "ignore the score". He gives games what he thinks they deserve and doesn't budge. If he thinks and awesome game is crap, he'll give it a crap score. If he thinks a crappy game is awesome, he gives it an awesome score. He's not trying to be PC and he's not going to be on some objective Consumer Reports crap of well the framerate is 60fps therefore the minimum score is an 8.

Destructoid, ladies and gentlemen.

I think Felicia Day is charming as hell and I can't think of a better person to carry the torch of gaming to the mainstream, which is sort of how I've always viewed her. Great presenter for stuff as well, not ultra annoying as for example G4 or Gametrailers. She was pretty good in Fallout New Vegas as well, and The Guild was ok.

@MariachiMacabre: They really are. Like that one video they made of dude going around getting "chest bumps" from booth babes at E3. Ugh.... god. The only redeeming thing about Destructoid is the rare times Jim Sterling isn't being a smarmy asshole he is actually fairly intelligent and can have a valid point... at times.

Agreed, Although his videos on The Escapist have been getting way better recently. His Rape vs Murder rant was pretty damn good.

More internet Drama. Last week SpoonyOne. This week Felicia Day. lol.. Don't ever change internet.

Spoony again? What did he do this time?

He got banned from That Guy With The Glasses and a literal shitstorm happened. Basically he went on a mad man tirade of anger and got banned for attacking his fans CONSTANTLY. But yeah. I was going to mention Spoony myself.

Ryan has acknowledged on Twitter that he has committed career suicide. He apologized for his behavior, though he tries to excuse himself by saying that he's been on Twitter for all of a month and didn't realize that @ messages could be read by everyone. He was also apparently very drunk on Friday night. Not that either of these things absolve him, though I can't judge, based on what little I know of him and Destructoid, whether or not he deserved to be canned for running his mouth. I've seen moron columnists and journalists go on far more offensive (and sober) rants and manage to keep their jobs even after a serious outcry.

This is the reason I will never drink Alcohol in my life. It causes stupid shit CONSTANTLY. Sorry, I don't like stupid. I like being smart and sane!

This issue is much simpler than all of you are making it.

Dude was a dick to one of the most universally liked people in the games industry. Now, he's paying the price for being a dick. Don't be a dick.

Dude was a dick, sure, but wouldn't it be nice if we just terrible statements float out into the ether. Instead you get both sides being cunty to each other, everybody looks bad.

Well isn't this silly, some guy gets fired from Destructoid for saying doing something stupid, meanwhile pretty much the entirety of Destructoid itself is pretty stupid.

Actually the only good thing to come out of Destructoid was the nice little 10/10 review score that so proudly is on the Deadly Premonition cover.

Here is everything I know about Felicia Day:

1. Her name is Felicia Day

2. Apparently she did some VO for Dragon Age 2

3. I'm pretty sure she played "real life fruit ninja" during the VGAs

So with Perez asking this question I have to wonder if she is some sort of well known industry person? Because why else would you even ask such a thing? I mean why does she need to contribute anything to the industry? I don't get it, this is confusing. In the music industry there are people who act like they do contribute something to it but actually don't, so did she ever say something like "I'm sooo important for the industry!" or something like that? What's wrong with "just" being a pretty face with enough skill and knowledge to make a living? I don't get it

What I do know however is, that I don't like people who just randomly start attacking other people over the internet so
