Someone at Destructoid's a jerk? Surely you jest, good sir.
Anyone following this Felicia Day twitter drama?

And a White Knight.
Oh, you've never, ever defended anyone, ever, who didn't need it, and did it out of the goodness of your heart? I either smell bullshit, or you are likely a misogynistic dickhead who simply, like most of these other clowns, feels the need to attack a chick (gamer or not). I'm mostly expecting the latter.

hell when Will Wheaton showed up It was just double the shame, Felicia day legitimately got her fame because shes a decent looking chick that is into games she really is a glorified booth babe.
I had no idea physical attractiveness had anything to do with acting ability. Are you fucking retarded? Could she have gotten on the show based exclusively on her looks? Possibly. Is it more than likely she got on it based on who she knows in the industry, like most people in the entertainment industry?
Don't worry, I'll wait while you figure it out.

The internet? I hate human beings. The internet's just a place where they don't have to put on a good face and worry about something bad happening to them because of it. Generally, anyways.

Excellent post.
It's hard to admit liking video games, and part of the reason is that video game players are fairly idiotic when it comes to anything social. This is a beautiful example.

Gah! You got me! Except, I'm defending the people who defend people, not defending Felicia Day. Personally, I'm mostly indifferent to what that guy said. It was dickish and uninformed, but I'm not one of the ones who got upset over it. What bugs me is the people who have such a hard time understanding that not everyone who defends a woman is doing it for the slim chance they'll somehow be thanked. Some people have respect for others, regardless of if they personally know them or not, and get upset when they're attacked for no good reason.

Instead you waste your time berating people who try to defend people they like and respect? Makes sense.
@CaptStickybeard: So you insult the person who is being defended (and doesn't need it, as you said) when you mean to insult those who are defending her? And you're not a misogynist, but make sure to call her a "semi-famous, e-celebrity princess"? K, just making sure.
In case people still aren't getting it, this argument is less about defending Day and more about human decency, or the lack thereof. You may dislike her, but jumping on the bandwagon of hating her based on her fans is pretty stupid and misguided. Every argument I've seen that she's not talented or anything is followed by "she's not that hot anyway" or "she's only popular because she has a vagina".
She's known for her personality and love of games. She's more tolerable than you. Get over it.
Wow they fired him? and Jim sterling posted the personal information of a person and got them and his kids harrased? wow I wont be visiting destructoid ever again.

@Everyones_A_CriticThis may be hard for you to believe but people are actually fans of her's and want to defend because you know...they're human beings who don't want to see people be insulted who they respect and like. Not everything has to have some sort of sexual goal behind it because she's a lady.I've never even been to Destructoid but it isn't the first time I've read a writer's comments and thought: "Wow, what a jaded, entitled pig." Anyone white knighting her on twitter thinking it's somehow going to matter at all in the long run is fucking retarded. I don't even understand the logic behind that. What's she gonna do, DM you pictures of her tits with a THANKS <3 note between her cleavage?
Yeah but why do people feel the need to rush in to help someone they don't know, and who is entirely capable of holding their own? It's patronizing as hell. At the end of the day, it's just words over the internet, those tend to hurt nobody but the poor idiots who write them. I'm sure reading Ryan's comments didn't make Felicia feel like some kind of damsel in distress who can't react like a normal adult and needs total strangers to come up with come-backs for her.
I mean shit- she's a writer, she can sass back if she wants to.
This whole story has no business blowing up at all. It's just become another stupid way for people to latch onto the hot game-issue du jour of misogyny.
so people can't support her? if she really didn't want people to defend her she could have just brought this up privately with the destructoid heads or something.
Well she was like @ mentioned or tweeted, so either Ryan Whatsit's followers or her followers would have seen that shit, and react. It's not like she had to incite them or anything. So her fans are who I'm calling out, for patronizing someone who didn't need help.
To put this into a hypothetical real life situation, if I saw someone mugging another person I would probably try to help, certainly wouldn't judge anyone who did. But if some crazy drunk asshole is shouting comments at a person from across the street, I really wouldn't feel the need to step in. Words are words, and people overreact to them.
Anyway, people can do whatever the hell they want with their 140 characters. I chose to insult the Euro cup runners-up.

Come on, there are varying levels of shittiness. Day is barely in the same ballpark as Munn, or even Chobot. I don't see Day going out and doing bikini shoots.
@Milkman: There's no sexism in it at all. I'm talking about a time I heard her on a podcast, and when the interviewer asked her why she got so much attention from the games community she said (I'm paraphrasing, but it's true to the substance of what she said), "People are just so surprised that an attractive woman like me knows about video games". That annoyed me because she's not that attractive and she's not that famous, either. I'm the first person to get on other people's case about sexist remarks (look at my post history); Felicia Day just has a big ego.
I'm pretty sure her comment was on an episode of the WowInsider podcast from a few years ago when Mike Schramm still hosted it.
@MikkaQ: I don't think hypothetical real life situations can apply to Twitter or most places in an internet filled with trolls and keyboard warriors who lack practical real life parallels.
Either way, I don't think it's uncommon for adamant fans to react to tweets addressing the person they're following this way. I'm sure there were plenty of cases of "@ThisGuy is a ******* for saying ________________ about that guy/this thing I like, ******** ThisGuy, etc." In this case it ended up being a semi-high profile freelancer calling out a higher-profile actress in context of a tactless tweet, so that was definitely a recipe for disaster.
Ever seen people tweet about politics?

What the Ku Klux Klan did in the south during segregation was a-okay because "that was the majority rule" in the south at the time. It was okay during World War 2 to put Japanese people into interment camps because "the majority rule" was in effect in the United States at the time.
None of those things mentioned was okay and should have never been okay because "the majority" said they where okay.

No we don't. Stop pretending like this about someone making innocuous criticism of Felicia Day's work. This is about someone personally sending her messages and accusing her of being nothing but eye-candy to be ogled at by nerds. That's objectifying, degrading, and sexist. Regardless of whether you like her work or not, is it really any surprise that a mainstream website wouldn't want to be affiliated with a guy who goes out of his way to personally message gaming personalities and accuse them of having no worth besides being penis-stroke fodder? When you act like an asshole on the internet and have name recognition, you run the risk of a backlash. You can't act like a jerk and then play the victim when you get called out on it. That's not what adults do. In case you don't recognize the extreme cleverness of what I'm doing, I'm not just talking about Ryan Perez anymore.
If this guy had said something like, "I don't like Felicia Day or her work. Why is she always brought up by gamers?" on his blog or something, there would be no controversy. Instead he goes out of his way to message her directly (and publicly) while going "AREN'T U JUST A BOOTH SLUT? HA HA HA!" He clearly wanted the public to see his message and cheer on his brave defense for all these gaming.
And I say, good job Ryan Perez. The public heard you, at least.
@EquitasInvictus: I guess my only point is... if you're not gonna intervene in real life for someone shit-talking someone, you especially don't need to do it on the web.

I don't talk shit about any of them. Personally, I feel like people need to accept that gaming isn't an underground boy's club anymore. Gaming is mainstream, populist, all-purpose entertainment; and yes, sometimes pretty females will actually like them. GASP! You know what I do when people call Munn a "geek goddess"? I laugh. I might roll my eyes. But I certainly don't think less of Munn for playing to a gullible demographic, and I certainly don't feel the need for a female to immediately list her credentials whenever she shows even a passing interest in video games or something geeky.
However, I will say that comparing Day to Munn is retarded, in that it is the sort of argument a retard would make. Day has created shows revolving around her experiences as a gamer, has voice-acted in several video games, has a production company that funds and produces geek and game-based films, has written and starred in a dramatic film series about Dragon Age, and has a YouTube channel where she vlogs and discusses various things gaming. Even after all this I wouldn't call her someone "influential in the industry" or anything, but I certainly wouldn't compare who to Munn. Olivia Munn is a girl who was pretty enough to land a job on G4, after the channel had already abandoned any shred of geek credibility it had left. She is related to gaming in any way. I don't begrudge her for this of course. Did you know she gets naked in that new Magic Mike movie? Yeah, I heard the reviews for the film were actually pretty good. Even male reviewers I respect have said that the movie is actually entertaining and fun, despite the male stripper-centric plotline.
Wait, what were we talking about again?

I typically hate it when people just quote somebody and say "This". But here we are.
@MikkaQ: That point is valid, but it's too bad that the internet ends up being counterintuitive in many cases. Ryan Perez's tweet was just poorly timed considering how topical the issue of misogyny has become lately, so it was inevitable that people were going to express indignation and I feel like it would've happened to an extent even if the issue wasn't topical. It's hard to ignore tactlessness and lack of professionalism that severe.
With regards to how messier politics would get, just imagine people's reactions to media mogul Rupert Murdoch's twitter around the time SOPA was shot down after he tweeted "So Obama has thrown in his lot with Silicon Valley paymasters who threaten all software creators with piracy, plain thievery." and "Piracy leader is Google...," etc. and at least in his case he didn't actually use "@" to address the offended parties he was addressing. No, I didn't.
What is your problem with booth babes?
I think that gaming conventions should be about the video games. You shouldn't be paying women to dress in skimpy outfits and pretend to like your game. You should be hiring people who can discuss it intelligently and don't exist for the sole purpose of posing for photographs.
Regardless, the issue isn't whether or not I like booth babes, but whether or not it's appropriate to compare Felicia Day to one. I'm of the firm stance that the answer to that is no.
@EquitasInvictus: Yeah, that Murdoch tweet's pretty ironic considering his company pirates private phone conversations.
And yeah this definitely got rolled into the massive debate on misogyny and I think is probably why it got so big to begin with. Then again, it IS the internet, this could easily disappear within a month.
If he attaked a guy no one would care. The white (virgin) knights of the internet must defend their (in their mind) women. *sigh* The internet is super serious business.
EDIT : Also I kinda agree with the guy. She's just playing off the "look at me I'm an attractive girl and I play video games" to get attention.

So you are saying since there is a majority opinion on something then that makes it right? I should changed my point of view to meet what a community thinks is okay? So going along your train of thought here, what the Nazis did during World War 2 was a-okay because "the majority rule" as you see it was in effect.
You know it sounds cliche but J. Michael Straczynski was right “Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say.Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: The requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world -- "No, YOU move.”
So guess what....maybe you should rethink YOUR opinion.
We live in a geek culture where for some reason its "wrong" to make fun of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1-bLmjLHlQ because "she put a lot of hard work into it"
But its okay to make fun of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=189QSTKC5no because even though these guys put hard work into it they're not popular and don't have a high rated Youtube show and haven't voice acted in all of four games.
"So you are saying since there is a majority opinion on something then that makes it right?"
No, I'm saying that if the entire community is telling you something is wrong, then it's probably worth reevaluating your perspective. But since you've gone and evoked Godwin's Law, I'm just going to assume you're too stubborn to do that. Have fun playing the victim, I guess.

It's objectifying, degrading, and sexist to suggest that someone is being objectified, degraded, and subject to sexism? Did he say she's good for nothing more than being eye-candy? I haven't seen any neat screencap combining all the hated tweets in a nice, neat little jpeg. Unless those three tweets from that Veronica Belmont picture is all there is to it, in which case this is waaaaaay crazy.
I say this in all seriousness, but if a woman is good looking and has sexy body as we society deems that to be and she makes the choice to model swimsuits or be a boothbabe, or pose in nude in some mag just to make a living why is that wrong? Maybe she is putting herself through college or she just really enjoys the work yes if she was being force to do these things thats wrong to the millionth power but as long as its her choice i don't see the problem.. Its men and other women that look down upon her or apply some stereotype to her for no reason.
In my opinion sexism like racism starts at home with us and only we change make changes to those things.
@dudeglove: Wikipedia says they started out as a Wordpress blog so... basically.

@leebmxAbsolutely not. Criticizing a celerity (criticizing anyone) is not acceptvalr grounds for termination in any free country. No one has ever been fired for saying that Usher is a talentless loser only popular because of his looks, because people are still allowed to have opinions. I sure hope you've never expressed a negative opinion about anything, anywhere. Under your example, Ryan is in a position to be fired every time he talks shit about _anything_, which is basically what he does. It's completely untenable. I work at a job where a half dozen people every day say awful shit to me, none of them will be fired from whatever job they have. Otherwise we're living in a world where I have to pretend that I like Michael Bolton because other people like Michael Bolton. Do you know the difference between an editorial, a podcast and twitter? NOTHING. They're all opinions spoken out loud. I can't fathom how you think something is more appropriate because of the medium. Also, to his point; is Felicia Day a 'respected member of the industry'? She has one voice over credit. What exactly is she respected for? Joss Whedon doesn't make games. Is she respected for being a personality?@Brodehouse: No, he sent an abusive message, unprovoked, to a respected member of the industry - anyone who did that would be fired. Editorialising in Podcasts or writing about whether you like someone's work is one thing and is great - sending someone a message saying they are a talentless bimbo is not. It's called professionalism.
Again picture this in any other industry. Say you work in a public position in Wallmart and you go on twitter and direct insults at another prominent person at Amazon. You will be walked out by security in 5 mins. People have clauses in their contracts that they have to uphold a proper image of their company or whoever they represent. Its nothing to do with anyone's sex.
Twitter is like public email. If you email insults to someone working in your industry you shouldn't be surprised if you get fired. Its fine to critique stuff, its not fine to send people messages calling them 'a glorified booth babe.' Its totally acceptable to say people's work is shit, or even question their motives but what he said is just insulting and unproffessional, and to be honest I don't believe you when you say you can't see that. As for the Michael Bolton argument, its fine to express dislike of his music. But imagine a Sony PR sends him tweets saying he is a 'talentless shit, only in it for the money' or something like that , do you think they will keep their job? - not likely
I don't know what industry you work in, but if people are saying awful shit to you all day you need to do something about it - its not acceptable. Either that or you're just terrible at your job.
In anycase I think we should probably stop discussing things like this - every time one of these issues come up me and you butt heads.
