I recently read my first manga, and I must say I'm already pretty hooked. I read what exists so far of Persona 4 which has 5 chapters and gets up to Yousuke's shadow confrontation. After watching the ER and craving more Persona, it's a cool way of reliving the story from a new perspective. I'm also about to start reading Persona 3 and Death Note.
Anyone else interested in manga? Have any favorites or suggestions for a series to read?
Anyone read manga?
I don't really read Manga except for a few that I've discovered by watching anime (haruhi, Lucky Star, etc.) but other than that I mostly stick to watching anime.
" I've read my fair share of manga, but to recommend anything, I'd need to know more about your general tastes. "I'm not really into action anime. I mostly like stuff that involves some kind of mental battle, seeing as the only Anime/Manga I watch or read are murder mystery-ish, like Persona and Death Note.
Anything that focuses on an insane and mysterious plot is worth reading to me. Hope this gives you some idea of what I'm into :P
Try...
- Liar Game
- Lost+Brain
- Q.E.D.
- Mirai Nikki (fucking nuts)
- Monster
- Suicide Island
- Say Hello to Black Jack
- Chaos Head (will fuck with your brain)
- Onani Master Kurosawa (literally: Masturbation Master Kurosawa, nicknamed Fap Note, hilarious)
All those are varying levels of mystery/psychological/thought-provoking/drama/horror-type stories.
Deathnote is pretty good, although I preferred to watch the anime on hulu. Naruto, Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist are also some really good ones.
" @TheGremp: You might like Monster. I haven't read the whole thing yet, but so far it's been really good. "Interesting plot... I'll check it out! Thanks.

I watched Naruto a few years back and it was pretty fun, kinda dropped out a while in though. Right now I'm watching Death Note and Trinity Soul, (Persona) which are both really intriguing to me.
" @Fullmetal216 said:If you can find something on onemanga, read it there (if you're not going to go to the trouble of downloading shit, which I don't) if you can because mangafox is annoying and has a tendency to be infested with random malware redirects and broken images." Do you go to onemanga.com? If you want manga that's where you get it. Awesome site. "I've been reading on mangafox.com, which never fails to look like "meganfox.com" whenever I look at it. "
I don't know if I can actually call it "manga" because it's Canadian, but the Scot Pilgrim series is excellent. Would appeal to anybody on Giantbomb.
My two personal favorites have to be Zetman and Akumetsu. Both are pretty original and Akumetsu in particular is really insane.
Edit: Decided to put descriptions from Onemanga.
Zetman: It follows the life of a homeless boy living with his "grandpa". The story starts to kick off when they encounter a man trying to commit suicide mumbling something along the lines of "before it is too late".
Akumetsu: Akumetsu is the story of Hazama Shou, who defends his own view of justice in a vigilante manner while wearing a mask and calling himself Akumetsu.
I read some graphic novels that come in digest form...so they look like manga, but they aren't really manga. I'm referring primarily to stuff from Oni Press like Scott Pilgrim and Wonton Soup, both of which I highly recommend.
Hmm, you said you don't really go for the action series, but I'd still recommend Soul Eater. It's about a school for students who want to become shinigami and I think it's a pretty fun concept. And if you enjoy some of the high school wackiness that was in the Persona series then I'd recommend Eyeshield 21.
I don't actively read manga but if someone gave me a copy of whatever I tend to read it in one sitting. It's not manga but the last graphic novel I read was Maus.
Try Mushishi, Mononoke, Ghost in The Shell(some action but also a heavy mystery element)." @Hailinel said:

Also, if you're not opposed to a non-cape western comic, try Transmetropolitan, Watchmen, and if you can get your hands on it, Danse Macabre.
I've read a lot of manga, including Death Note (which is pretty good for the first half).
Manga gets you serious works that go places most other forms of media won't go. And also less-serious works that are funny without being cynical (helps recover from the soul crushing experience of browsing the web).
My favorites are:
Serious stuff --
-Berserk - occasional demon rape and gore fest, Hieronymous Bosch, epic horror-fantasy
-Akira - the movie is well known of course
-BLAME! - focuses on imagery, cyberpunk psychological thriller maybe
-Blade of the Immortal - elements of 70s samurai flicks, historical setting
-Claymore - reminds me a little of berserk, but toned down (chicks in armor are hawt)
-Monster - reads like a novel, mystery / thriller, high quality story but drawn out a bit after the half way mark
-GantZ - post-cyberpunk horror, aliens, killing off protagonists, reviving protagonists, gets kinda tired
Comedy --
-Hajime no Ippo - a comedy centered around a kid who becomes a boxing champ
-One Piece - an epic fantasy parody involving pirates and super powers
-Great Teacher Onizuka - a lowlife dropout becomes a teacher at a high school, hilarity ensues
Also, as the above poster mentioned, Transmetropolitan and Watchmen are excellent.
*Sigh*" I don't read manga. Why would I when there is real literature? "

" I don't read manga. Why would I when there is real literature? "yeah. Like video games.

Well something that you might find interesting is Gambler Fish. I'm pretty sure that is on mangafox.com as well. It is kind of like a psychological game type manga. The situations are kind of contrived/ridiculous, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
On a side note...my favorite running shounen are One Piece, History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi, and Eyeshield 21.
I used to back when I collected all sorts of comic books.
I strongly suggest you hunt down the manga for "Akira". It is much different than the movie and much better as it has a longer storyline. The movie ends at about half way through the manga and still leaves out a lot of stuff. Marvel's EPIC brand line printed up a color edition of the mange series years ago which you might be able to collect if you are willing to spend a bit. I think there is a collected b&w volume out now that is affordable. Or, you can just read it online here [ Mangahut/Akira].
After that I'd suggest anything by Masamune Shirow and take a look at these few...
- Venus Wars
- Parasyte
- Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic Days
- Hokuto no Ken
- Blade of the Immortal

My problems with them might seem a little stupid, but: manga are only in black and white, which obviously makes it less colorful than an anime; reading manga is slower than watching anime, with turning the pages and reading what the characters say; there's music and voice acting in anime, there isn't in manga. From what I've seen, Death Note in manga form does not differ very much plot-wise from the anime like other manga such as Full Metal Alchemist. "Usually an anime based on a running manga will be chock full of filler or leave shit out or be forced to end the story before the manga ends, making random writing decisions and shit that don't necessarily make it better. For an action-oriented story an anime is better if it can run for a long time (like Naruto or Bleach) because you can actually see the fights in motion which I think is way better than in stills. For more drama-oriented shit the detail of the manga and the writing and whatever are often better than they can be in the anime because of time constraints on episodes and the reasons mentioned above.
" I think this has quickly degenerated from a "recommend some more intellectually-challenging/super-fucked-up/crazy manga" thread into a "list my favorite random shounen" thread. "I don't think Persona 4 is an intellectually challenging game or manga when it comes down to it's story...
And that's the start of the thread...
Anyways, I'm seriously disappointed that nobody seems to have read Battle Angel Alita.
Saikano is pretty great, though probably a manga with one of the most depressing endings ever.
And for some, 'fucked up' manga... Basilisk is superb ninja action.
Monster, GITS, Death Note, Akira, Blade of the Immortal are definitely great stuff people mentioned.
" I don't read manga. Why would I when there is real literature? "I find manga quicker to read than 'real literature'. I'm not a fast reader, and I get no pleasure from what words are used or in what order they're placed. No, instead of reading a long descriptive passage, I'd rather just look at a picture and see exactly what's happening.
" @FluxWaveZ said:Ah, from your explanation I can see exactly why the manga could be considered better in Death Note's case. Thanks." Yeah, people usually say that. I'm not sure I agree, though.
