I know that the normal ones are bad for you due to all of the sugar, however are diet variations? They just seem to be empty, but that cant be the case...
Are diet versions of drinks bad for you?
I heard something about like Diet Coke having something in it that fuckes with your muscles or nerves or something.
I can't remember it that well since it was ages ago, but it was some program filled with doctors and stuff.
But I can only drink Diet Coke since I'm Diabetic so screw that. If I die from it, it will be a good death :D haha
Sugar is actually a lot healthier for you than the popular supplements of Sweet'n Low or whatever else they have on the market these days. Sugar doesn't have any chemicals in them, which is why its healthier for you in the long run.
Pretty much all soda is "bad for you". If you really cared you would just stop drinking the shit, like I did long ago.
diet drinks contain Aspartame (phenylalanine / aspartic acid) which replaces sugar. It's a pretty controversial substance that has been tested again and again by the govtm to see if it has negative effects, but it doesn't really have any. There's a lot of hoaxes claiming all sorts of things about it, but there's nothing wrong with it.... it just tastes like shit imho, so I drink regular. Aspartame is only dangerous to those who have this disease http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenylketonuria
Edit: this is partly why Aspartame has been subject to scrutiny in the past:
Aspartic acid
Forty percent of aspartame by mass is broken down into aspartic acid (aspartate), an amino acid. At high concentrations, aspartate can act as an excitotoxin, inflicting damage on brain and nerve cells, but aspartate does not normally cross the blood-brain barrier in most parts of the brain without active uptake by transporters.
Humans and other primates are not as susceptible to excitotoxins as rodents; therefore, it is problematic to make conclusions about human safety from high-dose excitoxin response in rodent studies. Increases in blood plasma levels of aspartic acid after ingestion of aspartame are insufficient to cause concern for human subjects researchers.

Like the chemicals from it that your stomach can't metabolize accumulate in the muscle tissue. Sounds like a lot of crap, but I heard it from several sources, so it might actually be true.

Oh well
According to science, no diet drinks are not bad for you.
According to “health experts,” people who like to sell “natural” products these chemicals are terrible.
Basically in the 30 years, give or take, that artificial sweeteners have been in widespread use there has yet to be any reliable studies about their negative health effects. Nothing conclusive, just a bunch of conjecture, and loose correlations.
But I should add that consuming a bunch of sweet drinks might add a lot of caffeine to your diet and rot your teeth. In that sense they are bad for you. But the reduced calorie intake, and thus lower chance of obesity, makes diet drinks somewhat better.
Just drink water.
Not to echo what's already been said, but apparently, the sugar substitutes used in such diet drinks are cancer-causing. I'm not sure exactly how accurate that is, but considering that doing practically anything increases your risk of getting cancer, I'd tend to believe it's true, if maybe a little bit exaggerated.
Personally, considering how bad most diet drinks taste, anyway, I prefer to drink either water or iced tea.
And yes, any soda is technically "bad for you," especially in large amounts, but that's true of any food/drink. A lass of non-diet soda a day can be okay because it provides you with sugars that your body needs. There are other, better ways of getting those sugars, though.

It's a real bummer though, cause I love soda, but I can't drink regular ones either. I did find some that were sweetened with Stevia (all natural sweetener), but a 24 pack is $24! It's called Zevia, or Zeva, or something like that. I'm really curious about it, 'cause they have a bunch of different flavors. I just can't rationalize spending that much on soda. Water's better for me anyway.

What type of diabetes do you have? If you don't mind my asking.
Diet drinks are bad for you.I heard Diet Coke fuck up your body and drains your heart and infects your nerves or shit. And Sweet 'n' Low are also bad,im sure.

Well, I can tell you that I'm pretty healthy. If I drank as much regular soda as I do diet, I wouldn't be here today... I'd probably be in some operating room getting my leg sawed off due to diabetes or something. Chemicals may be "unhealthy," but it's the sugar that makes you fat.

Well not it isn't, it's a pain in the ass... You know what I meant :P
What a ridiculous question -- is diet soda bad for you? Seriously? Soda is not "good" for you in any way, shape, or form. It goes without saying that the diet version of such a drink is also not "good" for you, either. What? Did they suddenly start enhancing sodas with Vitamin C, Iron, Potassium, and whatever term-of-the-month will grab the consumer's attention and convince them that, "This shit is good for me!", like "electrolytes".
Ohh do you mean is diet soda WORSE? Well then you might be asking a slightly more decent question. Which is the lesser of two evils? Normal are the lesser of two evils simply because they taste much better. If you're going to consume something that's not good for you in any capacity (cola is purely empty calories with no health benefits whatsoever, just in case you didn't already know), it may as well be for the taste.
There sure are a lot of people in here saying "I heard that such and such causes this".. Let's see some citations! Some evidence! None of this "Well a friend of a friend told me that cellphones can cure cancer if you dial 0-4-2-6-6-6 and sing the national anthem backwards" bullshit.
There's also been a bunch of "Sugar's better than these sweeteners cause it's not full of chemicals". That's great... if you were eatting sugar straight up vs sweetners straight up, but you're not. You're drinking a product that is full of chemicals regardless of whether it uses sugar or sweeteners. So arguing that sugar is somehow better in that capacity is like saying "Slashing your wrist with a sanitized blade is better than using a rusty one because you lessen the chance of getting rabies".
That fake sugar is worse than drinking soda with regular sugar. Though you'd have a hard time finding a coke without corn syrup in it. If you're gonna have a soda, just have a soda, don't kid yourself with the diet version.
May I suggest Jones soda?

I think the biggest problem with aspertane is that some people can taste it, and some cannot. I believe its genetically inherited. =P I cant taste the difference between diet and non diet, so for me its great. However for my girlfriend, she cant drink anything diet because the aspertane taste is so terrible.

Here's some findings from an 8-year University of Texas study that I had read...
An excerpt from the study author:
"What didn't surprise us was that total soft drink use was linked to overweight and obesity," Fowler tells WebMD. "What was surprising was when we looked at people only drinking diet soft drinks, their risk of obesity was even higher."
"There was a 41 percent increase in risk of being overweight for every can or bottle of diet soft drink a person consumes each day," Fowler says.
One reason is that the artificial sweeteners in diet sodas create a negative hormonal response in the body that increases fat storing hormone production and increases cravings for more sweets and refined carbohydrates in the time period after consuming the diet drink.
Now, I haven't checked the credentials of the author of this article, one "Mike Geary, Certified Nutrition Specialist, Certified Personal Trainer" and his site certainly seems to have an agenda -- eg. sell his book/newsletter. But CBS ran an article citing the same University of Texas study, with them saying:
"What we saw was that the more diet sodas a person drinks, the more weight they were likely to gain," she says.
That finding was a big surprise, but it reflected what nutritionist Melainie Rogers saw in her work with obese patients in New York.
"When we would switch them on to diet soda off regular soda, we weren't seeing weight loss necessarily, and that was confusing to us," Rogers says.
So you could say while diet sodas don't have calories, they can increase calorie consumption by creating cravings through hormonal responses. In other words, they really are no better so you may as well drink what tastes good.
In any event, it's certainly an interesting subject to look into.

Back in the 70s, many diet drinks used the artificial sweetener Saccharin. Studies that the time suggested that people who had a saccharin as a regular part of their diet had increased chance of developing bladder cancer. The use of Saccharin was outlawed in some countries and warning labels were required on all products that contain Saccharin in the United States. Read more here at the National Cancer Institute, which is part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Later in the 80s, NutraSweet came along which had its own set of risks. That the brand name of the sweetener Aspartame.
