I just like that upbeat feel of Vampire Weekend and Phoenix
Band that have a great sound
Rilo Kiley, Rush, Coheed and Cambria, Iron Maiden, Silversun Pickups, My Morning Jacket, Death Cab for Cutie
I like the Decemberists' style of music and the powerful sounds of their latest album is cool and harkens back to folk rock, then prog rock, some metal, and then back. It's bizarre, but I enjoyed it. Definitely listen to the whole album though, it tells a story.
Deadmau5 is good as well, as is Daft Punk and I enjoy some Amon Tobin.
If you want great instrumental or drumming/rhythm, Bear McCreary's soundtrack to Battlestar Galactica is fantastic, as is Hans Zimmer's score for the Dark Knight. I listen to those while gaming and they're great.
Metal, I would say Tool. The power of the sound coming from that band is awe inspiring. Even if you don't like heavy metal, give them a try and just appreciate the complexity and accuracy in which they implement polyrhythms.
Arcade Fire gets my vote as well. Great band.
Earth. Just happens to be my favorite band at the moment. especially the albums Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method, Hibernaculum (EP) and The Bees Made Honey... all have that certain sound. Makes me all tingly.
I don't even know what's meant by 'band that have great sound.' It sounds like the translation of the Soviet equivalent to Top of the Pops.
Have a dislike for bands that sound the same all the time, I think bands need to develop and mature from album to album. One of the reasons I have a pure dislike for U2 who sound the same every damn album.
Always enjoyed the sounds of Brand New myself and many others:
" Bands of the moment: Cage The Elephant and Bombay Bicycle Club. I don't usually listen to "Indie" so it's strange for me to listen to BBC "Not to keen on Cage The Elephant, but Bombay Bicycle Club are great. Recently been listening to The XX's first album which is fantastic.
" @sgjackson: I think you just started something. Here comes trouble in 3... 2... 1 . . . "@Xeiphyer said:
" @sgjackson said:That's my point. They had their best material in the 80s, but they sounded like shit." Metallica is a terrific band, but they had a terrible sound in the 80s. "The Metallica I like is probably their older stuff, the new stuff is not good to my ears =/ But I'm not a huge Metallica fan either way. "
" Daft Punk Daft Punk Daft Punk Daft Punk Daft Punk Daft Punk Daft Punk Daft Punk Daft Punk Daft Punk Daft Punk Daft Punk Daft Punk Daft Punk Daft Punk EDIT:Sorry but they're just so awesome:) "
Well, once again, it's another thread where people try to out obscure each other... no Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Finger 11, etc, etc... I guess the Eagles of Death Metal video featured Dave Grohl/Jack Black, but it always feels disingenuous to me that someone doesn't like a more mainstream band." @Fbomb: that's because mainstream music sucks.. haven't you HEARD?! "
Edit: Nevermind, I just saw some of the posts with Metallica, Silver Sun Pickups, etc, etc... I've been proven wrong.
In terms of modern, indie bands, I really like Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes and The Shins. They all have a great sound, though different from one another.
As far as older bands, there is no denying the awesome sounds bands like Rush, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Aerosmith and Allman Brothers. I guess the Beatles count too because they usually sound so pristine and perfect.
I like the sound of Broken Social Scene. Fire Eye'd Boy - Anthem for a 17 Year Old Girl - 7/4 Shoreline - Pacific Theme
And, absolutely, the Pixies. Here Comes Your Man - This Monkey's Gone to Heaven - Gigantic - Wave of Mutilation
"Metallica is a terrific band, but they had a terrible sound in the 80s. "WHAT!?!?!?! thats like saying Pink Floyd was better without Roger Waters... COME ON !!!
Great choice." Eagles of Death Metal.
Just don't read too much into their band name. :P "
Also, Queens Of The Stone Age
