Ok I didn't narrow the list down that much, but trust me the real list would be much more. Also for those who dont know these bands I recommend you listen all these albums, they show that our decade can still produce amazing music if you just look for it.
That's a long list of bands that I've mostly only heard of in passing.
With that out of the way, I'd say the best album I've heard this year is Andrew Bird's Noble Beast. Its more of the same, really, but when that "same" is Andrew fucking Bird, I can cope.

Great choice, I forgot about that album. I thought it came out in 2008 for some reason. If you like that album you should check out the band Gomez, especially their album A New Tide. Its not a favorite of mine, thats why I didnt put it on the list, but it is still really good.
I'd have to say Mastodon - Crack the Skye. Also, I thought Mos Def's The Ecstatic was pretty good, especially Auditorium and History. That's impressive that you can listen to so much new music, I always seem to revert to my old favorites.
" I have to agree with most of the ones you listed. You saved me the task of making a huge list haha.I also liked: Deastro - Moondagger The Twilight Sad - Forget the Night Ahead Converge - Axe to Fall Why? - Eskimo Snow We Were Promised Jetpacks - These Four Walls I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but whatever. "
Great choices. I didnt like Eskimo Snow as much as their last album Alopecia, but it was still really good. The Twilight Sad are starting to become favorites of mine, their vocalist helps make their songs stand out. I thought Forget the night ahead was better than their first album. Great improvement.

In the last couple of years I have gotten really into music. I used to mostly listen to classic rock, 90s bands, and cheesy 80s synth pop, but now I listen to anything. Especially Prog Rock, even though Im not sure how you would call a band progressive. Seems like a vague name for a genre. I still listen to 80s pop though, and ABBA!
@FeatheredRainbows: Yeah, there was no way that Eskimo Snow was gonna top Alopecia, even more so since it's an album of leftovers. It is still really good though.
I agree with you on this, but I also liked Relapse by Eminem. Hopefully Lupe's new album, "Lasers", come out this year and lets the whole world know that he is the greatest hip-hop artist of our generation.

Lupe is pretty good, but I find him a bit generic at times. Saul Williams is much better in every way, so is Aesop Rock despite his dull vocals.
@FeatheredRainbows: I would classify Saul Williams as a poet more than a hip-hop artist, but he is a beast at what he does. Lupe reminds me of how biggie and tupac did their rapping, but from a more intelligent standpoint. His music tells you a story, and his mixtapes and albums keeps you interested of what he is going to say in his next song. My favorite songs would have to be "Spray Paint and Ink Pens" with Fort Minor and Ghostface Killa, and "Put You on Game". "Spray Paint and Ink Pens" just shows the crazy imagination Lupe has, because while Ghostface and Fort Minor are rapping about real life situations, Lupe completely goes off to left field and raps about a space journey where this captain is trying to deliver a little girl who is supposed to be a cure for some disease. It was some pretty deep stuff. "Put You On Game" was really a dark song that just talked about the evil intent in the world, and that this character was the cause of it all. I just like Lupe's personality really, because he has a nerdy background, and he's from Chicago where I'm from. So I have to represent my hometown and give support to Lupe, who is trying to deliver a positive message through his music.

God, I'm so behind. I still haven't got new Isis, new dredg, new Mono, new Brand New, new Saosin, and new mewithoutYou. I've listened to an embarrasingly small amount of new music from 2009. Still, my list goes:
1. Thrice - Beggars 2. The Dear Hunter - Act 3: Life and Death 3. Thursday - Common Existence 4. The Mars Volta - Octahedron 5. Jonsi & Alex - Riceboy Sleeps
"I'd have to say Mastodon - Crack the Skye. Also, I thought Mos Def's The Ecstatic was pretty good, especially Auditorium and History. That's impressive that you can listen to so much new music, I always seem to revert to my old favorites. "
this and also new junk aesthetic by every time i die, that album was pretty kickass OH AND LETS NOT 4GET WRATH BY LAMG OF GOD :D
1.) Rammstein: Liebe ist Fur Alle Da 2.) Mastodon: Crack the Skye 3.) Megadeth: Endgame 4.) Dethklok: The Dethalbum II 5.) Eminem: Relapse this one gets a slot by default, it's the only other album I've listened to this year and is by no means the best of the year....there's but a handful of songs I like, it's nowhere near the quality of The Marshall Mathers LP or The Eminem Show but it's better than the piece of shit that was Encore.
Other than that I haven't listened to any recently released albums, but those five were really good.
