In order of the first bands to come to mind, not in order of favourites.
" Two that come to mind immediately are Metric and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I'm sure I'm missing some more obvious ones, but that's what I thought of first. "I heard of Metric, they were playing near me but I missed them. What is a good album of theirs to start with? I heard their newest one is good.

This Will Destroy You In order of the first bands to come to mind, not in order of favourites. "I think Dredg make their first album in the late 90s, I could be wrong though. Mars Volta are a good choice, my favorite album if their is Bedlam in Goliath. What did you think of their newest album Octahedron?
Octahedron's a solid album. There's something a little unsettling about a 50-minute Mars Volta album, and it never really hits the highs of their previous albums. It's maybe just a little too plain. Thomas Pridgen spends too much time sitting there not playing. They need that dude all the time; he's a beast of a drummer. I'm also getting a little tired of Bixler-Zavala's lyrics; really, how many songs can he mention eyelids? It's still really good, because all Mars Volta albums are, so it's a case of least good rather than worst. Bedlam's cool, if a little inconsistent, but it does have some totally badass songs. My personal favourite is Frances the Mute. I'd rate that album very highly on my favourite albums ever list.
I'm actually a bit surprised that you have Stars listed among your favorite bands of the decade, and you haven't already heard them. Emily Haines, the lead singer of Metric, has done some guest vocals on some Stars tracks. I'm guessing you'll really like Metric. Also, you might want to check out Emily Haines's solo album Knives Don't Have Your Back.
" @FeatheredRainbows: Man, I really fucked up on the dredg thing. Wikipedia says they were founded in 1993. Gulp. Octahedron's a solid album. Did you hear their new album The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion? I think it is their best.

" @FeatheredRainbows: I would recommend starting with either their most recent release, Fantasies, or Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?. Their other two albums are good too, but I think those will serve as your best intro to the band.Stars are one of the few bands these days with good lyrics, them and The Mountain Goats. I will check out those albums, thanks for the suggestions. Lyrics wise, Stars kinda reminds me of The Beautiful South, and Belle and Sebastian. I also wanted to mention Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, they are a great experimental metal band.

Just about anything Jack White gets his hands into is great
White Stripes
Dead Weather (The Guitarist and Bassit from Queens of the Stone Age and the Singer from the Kills, really an amazing album)
Raconteurs
Other high lights include: The Arcade Fire, Muse, and Cage the Elephant (they're new, but their recent album showed a lot of promise)
"Since you like The Unicorns you might like Islands. i think they have some members from The Unicorns. Their new album Vapours is worth listening to.2000's

I do like islands, I liked the unicorns a bit better though. I thought the contrast between the lyrics and music was a bit more prominent. Although Islands definatly has higher production value and sounds and feels much fuller. I didn't know that they had a new album coming out, I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the heads up.
Motion City Soundtrack
The Postal Service

"TV on the Radio. Yet I think they are also the most underrated. "
Oh man I love them, I saw them play once. I think they were almost overated among people I knew before i moved.
In terms of straight-up band, as in, a few guitarists, one bass player, drummer, etc
- The Strokes
- Arcade Fire
- The Hives
- Interpol
- Grizzly Bear
I think of 'bands' as traditional rock standard collaboration, which there isn't a lot of these days as more artists are multi-instrumentalists, such as St. Vincent.
" Technically Rise Against started up in 1999, but I really think they count. As such, I'll put a vote in for them "1999-2009 = 10 years = a decade. It's kosher.
Well, I don't really listen to modern music. But one of the bands I listen to, that was conceived after year 2000, is Kaizers Orchestra. If you haven't heard about them, check them out, they are pretty unique. They do sing in Norwegian though, but most Norwegians don't understand what they sing anyway.
Bands I love that started this decade?
Ef
Diablo Swing Orchestra
Logh
Yndi Hadla
Venice is Sinking
Moving Mountains
Library tapes
Fall of Efrafa
Baroness
Just some bands i have really enjoyed recently that started in this decade.
" @Tallica9000 said:Oh hahaha. I didn't see the decade thing, i just saw a bunch of alternative bands being listed. Fail on my part." Radiohead for sure too "Radiohead started in the 90s.

These are some of my favorite bands whose 1st albums were released in 2000 or later. Some of these bands may have formed in the later part of the '90s, but they had nothing on vinyl before the 21st century.

Wow, I thought this would just be a list of metal bands but bunch of Canadian indie pop legends here, or at least legends in my opinion. Never heard of Deerhunter before but I'm listening to them now and they're pretty great!
Most of the big bands that I know have been said but I just saw Owen Pallet's Final Fantasy last night and he's getting up there. He performed with a symphony backing him up and I think we'll hear much from him in the future. And Feist deserves some props.
