Yo
So before switching to Bell, I was on a rock solid Videotron 10mbps internet connection for about 2 years. Had no problems whatsoever, except for weeeeell, one small problem... the bandwidth cap on that connection was 100GB/m, and me and my brother end up using 200GB/m give or take, resulting in a ~200$ surcharge on the 70$ deal, per month.
So I switched to this shitty Bell so called 10mbps connection, which is PPPOE based, so it sucks, but the caps are much less harsh, you still get a cap but theres a 30$ limit if you pay extra per month. The problem with this connection is that it is all over the place, no where near the stability of videotron's cable. God forbid you download something and your precious 10mbps connection can't even download packets correctly anymore, webpages don't respond anymore, and if they do, they show up as crude HTML. bottom line is this connection is garbage.
So i checked videotron's site again and they have a 50mbps connection offering, but with the same 100GB/m cap (both download and upload), and yey, you can get a bandwidth "package" of 30GB extra per month for a small fee, yay! So theoretically, it would take you a few hours at max connection speed to go over your monthly allowance!!
After reading this the bullshit is further compounded and I cannot understand how first of all Canadians deal with this as if it isnt a huge problem. I remember people in the States complaining to Comcast or whoever after they tried imposing bandwidth caps, and in the end they capitulated and removed the caps as a result of their userbase uprising.
Anyway long story short, if you live in Canada or Montreal, wtf is your ISP and are you happy with it? What speeds do you get and do you have bandwidth caps? If you have suggestions, preferably something equal to or over 10mbps and with non-bullshit bandwidth caps. Thanks
Best canadian High Speed ISPs (Montreal)?
It all depends on where you live. Right now I live in a small town on Vancouver Island in BC and am using Shaw High Speed (which I THINK is 7.5 mbps) and it's really stable, quite fast (pings are ultra low for all my games) and I've never been told off for going over my bandwidth. The problem with Shaw is the connection degrades significantly once you move to more populated area. In my last year at UVic I was living close off campus and I had high speed and was sharing it with 4 others. Well I lived in an area with tonnes of students so at around 6-8 the internet would slow to a crawl. When I would ping google I'd get pings of close to 1000 sometimes, it was horrible. Overall I've only had trouble with Shaw once (and it sucked bad) but outside of that they've delivered a pretty speedy connection and when I used Extreme speed in a different location in the same city again it was blazing fast, like it was rated at 15 mbps but most of the time I was getting between 20 and 30 mbps, so I'm sure all ISP's are good and bad it all depends on where you live (population wise).
We both play games online regularly. We both watch and stream movies and tv shows online. We both download tv shows weekly by episode. And remember, 100GB is for both upload and download so if you are sending a 200MB zbrush document to a client, or chatting with your clanmates on ventrilo or skype, that counts into the bandwidth cap. It's pretty easy to go over 100GB a month if you are into gaming/internet media. There is also no rational for an ISP to offer a 50mbps connection while having a 100GB monthly limit that one could technically burn through in half a day using that speed, I'm sorry it makes no sense." @warxsnake: How do you keep going over 100GB a month? I think you need to tell your brother to stop downloading movies and porn or pay the extra charge. "
Wow, Canada technology sucks. I pay about $50 a month for Verizon FIOS service and get 20 mbps down and 6 mbps up on a fiber optic connection with no bandwidth caps.
At least we're better at grammar." Wow, Canada technology sucks. "
I use Rogers, I think its about 10 down, 5 up. I don't think I have a cap. It suites it's purpose fine for me.
" the 100gb per month one is the best IMO its what I have from videotron. I was almost always near my limit each month. "hmm yeah, I'll just have to make a deal with my bro to go slow on the downloads/streaming. It's really hard not to go over once you have 2,3 people using the service. I guess I'll go for the 50mbps 100GB/m + 30GB/month pack.... ugh
You're not going to get much better than videotron up in MTL bth - the 100gig limit is kind of a bitch, but the service is always stable, always fast.
Tone down the usage is all I can say.
I think my buddy at work knows of a small ISP in the area though, Ill get in touch with him and let you know what the name of the company is.
I don't know if this happens in Canada but here in Britain if you go over your download limit continuously you can get black listed by all Internet providers. Damn fair usage policy
Look like the DSL connection is crap were you live. Basically, only Videotron & Bell are the main ISP provider, if you go with another DSL provider it still suck. Oh yea, Bell throttling bit torrent connection at pick hour.
Personally, I use Teksavvy, 30$ for a 5Mbs and a 200GB cap. But then I have a good DSL connection.
" @Valentine said:thats why I can't stand videotron. They only want customers who check email. We both play games online regularly. We both watch and stream movies and tv shows online. I'm with teksavvy, same bullshit as bell but with good customer service. The issues you are having with Bell are not normal thouhg. I was with bell for years and had perfect internet for gaming, low ping, and steady service. Only problem is they kept changing their contracts at will, and Bell's customer service is a nightmare. In fact, I'd never buy anything related to Bell ever again in my life.
So yeah, maybe give teksavvy a shot?
