I find some good stuff here and there, but I don't really know where to look for good music other than occasionally running into it on youtube or facebook. What are some of the best albums and songs of the year? If you can rank them it would be appreciated. I like all kinds of music, but I can't stand emo screamo or whatever it's called. I'm not a HUGE fan of rap music, but I can still enjoy some of it when it's not just "dem ho's, bitches, money money ha ha, pimpin, I ain't into making love, etc".
Best Music of the Year
My top 5 is all hip/hop this year, it's been a pretty awesome year for good hip/hop if you ask me.
1. Section.80 - Kendrick Lamar
2. Elmatic - eLZHi (free mixtape)
3. Undun - The Roots
4. The Greatest Story Never Tolds - Saigon
5. Cats and Dogs - Evidence

.
Other hip/hop projects I've enjoyed:
Zero Heroes - XV, free mixtape
Return of 4eva - Big K.R.I.T, free mixtape
Spiritual State - Nujabes.
Black Up - Shabazz Palaces
In terms of video game soundtracks, Portal 2 had a great one, but I agree with those people who have mentioned that you need to have actually played the game to understand some of the music. For example, there's an ambient humming tune that maybe sounds a little boring without subtext, but in the game, it tips you off to there being a laser as part of the puzzle. There were a couple puzzles where the puzzle had certain components hidden out of sight, and listening for the subtle audio cues certainly helped. There's also a fair share of songs in there that are great even without context.
As for non-gaming soundtracks, I really like The Black Keys' El Camino. Check it out if you're into catchy indie rock/blues stuff.
@H2Oyea: The Weeknd is great. His first mixtape House of Balloons was brilliant and is one of my favourites. Other than that, I haven't been listening to too many albums that came out this year, more of the older stuff, but I did check out Smother by a British band called Wild Beasts, and it is fantastic. I'm eagerly anticipating finding James Blake's debut album and Drake's Take Care in my stocking come the 25th too.
Cliff Martinez's Drive soundtrack... I'm not really a 'music guy'. Also, I'm a big fan of Kavinsky's Nightcall.
I'll agree with those above me (Portugal and M83)...also The Antlers, Neon Indian, and Phantogram come to mind. An indie kind of year for me I guess.
