Found at my roommate's workplace. Nobody knows what the hell it is:

No Caption Provided

The black bit just above the stinger (ovipositor?) are guts. The most exotic location my roommate's workplace receives packages from is Mexico. Found attempting to nest in sheet rock. My guess is some sort of wasp, but I've never seen a wasp this gnarly before. Online searches turned up nothing.

If you have done considerable research but cannot identify it, you should contact your local health authority, it is your civic obligation. Maybe contact the FBI, there will be a real life Mulder and Scully ready to jump on the case. Scully is the most sexually repressed and still sexually alluring woman I believe I have ever seen on TV.

I agree, perhaps some kind of spider hunting wasp. It could also be a Horntail or a Sawfly.

In my bug expertise, I feel very confident identifying that particular insect as both "icky" and "gross."

What you've got there is clearly a monster. Only option is to burn it and your roommates workplace.

But seriously it does look kinda like a spider hawk.

You people should be ashamed of yourselves, you absolute block heads. Years of X-Files and you are not able to unravel the simplest of conspiracies. This is clearly a bug that has been mutated by the efforts of some nefarious secret organisation, covertly funded by American co-operations with the aim of using Humans as hosts to control us and totally influence our purchasing decisions. Why someone has not contacted the FBI... I do not know. I would do so but I am in England and I am not prepared to pay the call charges.

Damn, it looks like someone snapped his shit up real good. Anyway it looks like a mutation of a wasp or something. For some reason I'm reminded of the movie The Fly.

The thing doesn't have a name that can be "known" in the way you're thinking. It's not really even supposed to be on this side. I suggest you cover your eyes and ears, and dive - weeping - into your closet, and hope its only goal is to kill you swiftly.

Ask reddit http://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthisbug/ they should know ;)

Mystery solved thanks to their Frequently Asked Bug section!

Not a wasp at all. It's apparently a member of the Asilidae family, also known as robber flies or assassin flies, which doesn't even narrow it down that much, as there about 7000 species of Asilidae. My bug is a dead ringer for the fly in the first big image on the Wiki page (coloration is slightly different and it's a male so it doesn't have the crazy looking ovipositor, but it's otherwise identical), somewhat disconcertingly called an "unidentified species." Species of Asilidae can be found all over the world (yes, even Sweden). They're not particularly dangerous to humans; a painful bite, but not venomous .

Thanks for the help, and thanks to everyone else for the comments, my roommate got a kick out of them.
