Could You Shoot Your Own Dog?

Nearly all pet owners are eventually faced with the question of euthanizing their beloved pet.   Either due to age, illness or injury we are asked by the doctor to make a choice.  I myself had to give my consent when my cat was poisoned.   But, while it is one thing to nod your head as the veterinarian prepares the injection, it is quite another to violently pull the trigger yourself.   This is why the climax to “Old Yeller” is such a gut-wrenching scene.   Fifty years later, Will Smith had to choke the life from his dog rather than see her become a ravenous monster.   I don’t currently own a pet, so I’ve had some time to distance myself from that bond, but I question if I could still.   It’s not about guts or machismo, but doing a hard thing when every fiber in you body is crying out against it.

So, I wonder how many of us would have the fortitude to accept that responsibility and lay our friend down.
 
EDIT: I don't know why I thought of this, but I was watching "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" on cable a little while ago.

There is a reason people get paid to do it for you. So you don't have to which is why I said no. I love my pet's and it would be to painful to do it myself.

No. If my dog is ill to the point where I don't think it's fair to keep them going, I won't hesitate to take them to the vet. Just shooting though? I don't think I could.

For some reason, I think if I had a choice, I'd rather be the one ending my dog's life, not sure if that sounds logical, but it pains me to have that mental image of my pet wondering "what is this person doing to me?" if a vet were to do it. If I'm the one doing it, perhaps my dog will find a little bit more comfort if they trust me.

But anyway, fuck you for making me visualize that scenario, fuck will smith too!

However, if I woke up to find that I owned a dog, I would personally strangle it on the spot.

My dog was hit by a drunk driver and we had to give the ok to put him down because he back was shattered.

I don't like this thread much.  I would sooner shoot a person then shoot my cat or a Dog if I had one.

If he was in pain then yes, I could think of the bigger picture and help him as best as I could. If that involves ending his life, I would do that. I would be crushed and broken, but I could do it.

I'd rather shoot one of my pets than have them given a lethal injection. I don't know that they're not painful, and if they're anything like lethal injections we use on humans then they take a couple shots, one to paralyze them and one to stop the heart and one to kill the nervous system or something awful like that. But a bullet to the head is ugly, but instant.

Yes, and I actually had to in 1988.  She was hit by a truck and was in what must have been unimaginable pain.  Her entire pelvic area was crushed almost flat.   To have made her wait until she could reach a vet's office would have been extremely cruel.

Yes. He shot her. She was experiencing nothing but pain and there was no way for her to turn back from it so he shot her rather than make her suffer for half an hour.

No, never ever. I don't even own a gun, nor would I ever buy one.
 

I'm sure if it had rabies and was trying to bite me, id have no problem. Though recently I have been feeling guilty about this squirrel I shot, multiple times. (BB Guns are ineffective at killing squirrels humanly :(

I shot her using a shotgun.  It was one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do.  My father always taught me that the most humane way to dispose of critically injured/dying animals was a quick blow to the back of the head right where it joins the spine.  (I grew up on a farm and so this type of thing came up occasionally.)  However, I was 13 at the time and afraid that I wouldn't necessarily have the strength to properly do that with one quick blow, and I would inadvertently cause her more pain.  I was honestly scared shitless.
