( Sorry to the mods if this counts as youtube spamming.)

As much as i like Leonardo Di Caprio, I think this movie looks terrible. I think the thing that bothers me teh most is the CG. Don't get me wrong CG has it's place in the movie industry, but with a setting like this they should just pay the extra money for a few sets.

Any Great Gatsby film without Robert Redford is a poor Great Gatsby film. And even then, Robert Redford was the good part, and not a whole lot else.

Based upon this trailer, I think this will be a bad thing, but that's based around a few things. I don't like Baz Lurhmann as a director. I think the cast seems somewhat weak, apart from Leonardo, as you said. And I don't like any adaptation of a book that I genuinely like. I am incredibly biased in this fashion, but that does not preclude the distinct possibility that this will be a steaming pile of poop of a movie. Or it could be the best Great Gatsby movie out there, I don't know. I just know I won't watch it.

I hate that book with a passion, so I have no desire to see it. But still, from the trailer it looks a bit patomime and rubbish.

Another Great Gatsby movie? Pushing aside the fact that I think that is a book that could never be made into an interesting movie (because of the style of book it is), haven't they done like five of them already?

Perfect music for the trailer and movie -_-

Doesn't look to interesting, but then again, i have a built in bias against love stories. Maybe it has something to do with me being a dude.

The CG gives it a weird fairy tale kind of thing. May be interesting, I don't know.

I personally think its great. I was particularly impressed at the beginning of the trailer how they done Gatsby's parties like it should be. Glamorous, loud and exploding with money. Although I think Carey Mulligan was the wrong choice for the role.

I think Leo DiCaprio's run of great movies is over. J. Edgar was terrible and this looks "meh" at best. From the trailer, it looks like it's trying too hard to imitate the Romeo + Juliet movie and will probably end up being soulless and bland as a result. Don't even get me started on Carey Mulligan. No doubt her "big" scene will be her crying for about 5 minutes straight.

As a movie, it looks like it'll be amusing in a Luhrmann-y sort of way, but I never much cared for the book so I can't say I have any interest in seeing it.

Not the best director, but I get why it's him who made this.

Much like Moulin Rouge or Romeo and Juliet, this could be fun in a cheese ball kind of way. I'll watch it at some point, probably on netflix

Same here.  I'm not sure why this is a thing... but I guess the same could be said about nearly anything the movie industry puts out. "Did this need to exist?"

I think the visuals look stunning. For that reason alone, I'll probably see it, though probably not in theaters. The rest looks okay.

I doubt that "No Church In The Wild" actually finds its way into the movie, though. Remember, this is a trailer. Publicity is finding the most dramatic sequences and dialing them up to 11. The film will probably be more similar to what people would expect, though Moulin Rouge makes a fair statement for the song actually getting in somehow. More importantly, I think "Dark Fantasy" or "Power" would probably have been a better fit for the themes of the movie, so, Baz, pick better Kanye West songs.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I fucking hate you for posting this. Just... just. No. Please. Never do this again. To anyone.

It could be worse couldn't it? Like that shitty Butterfly Kisses song or that song about dead mommy's shoes or whatever the fuck it was about? Sorry, won't do it again. I dated a girl in the mid-to-late 90s who had a hard on for this type of shitty music and loved that Romeo and Juliet movie.

great gatsby is one of the best books of all time, it's a classic but unlike other considered classics (Moby Dick, Crime and Punishment, War and Piece) it's relatively short, it's engaging, thought provoking.

Nothing like this movie which seems pretty terrible.

usually hate classic books but Great Gatsby is so good I usually read it once a year

Wasn't expecting that at all. On the one hand, it doesn't seem like it fits. But on the other, why not go a bit crazy? There's already a "classic" Gatsby movie, and I don't think we needed another.

I think it looks... interesting. It has a very Moulin Rouge computer-generated city look to it, which I don't know if that's how I imagine the Great Gatsby. But, I guess we shall see when it comes out. I think I am interested in seeing it through, I really like the book.

Love the book. Seem to be the only one here who does. This movie only superficially looks like the book. At least they got the billboard in. I don't see this even making my Netflix queue.

As for The Great Gatsby, that movie looks like an enormous pile of shit. DiCaprio is Oscar-baiting and Baz Luhrmann is a hack. Even as somebody who is admittedly not the biggest fan of Fitzgerald's book, there's no denying that the movie looks god-awful.

It probably does a fine job with the story but I don't like the way it looks and the tone of it. It looks too modern, too clean, and too vibrant. I understand it was the roaring 20s and that's a part of the story but some restraint certainly isn't a bad thing.

Yeah... checked wikipedia. That is why I deleted my post. I fully admit I was wrong there... but still Ayn Rand was insane and should never be listened to. I should check this book out sometime... Need to finish War of the Worlds right now. WHY is that book better than every single movie adaption? Why!?

I love Baz Lurhmann but I think his style does not fit in with Fitzgerald and his classic novel. The cast does look great and I think they can do a good job but the style this movie is going for is not right for the book.

But I hope I'm wrong...The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite books.

Serious question: do people hate The Great Gatsby purely because it was one of the books they were forced to read in high school English class?

Because pro tip: it was probably the best book you were forced to read in high school English class. I'm sure when you were 14 you felt really cool when you decided to just automatically hate every book you were forced to read in school, but carrying that attitude through into your adult life seems immature. Seriously, it's not like school boards are going out of their way to make you read garbage. The novels you had to read in high school are usually quite good.

For example, the books I remember reading in high school were To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies, The Great Gatsby, and The Stone Angel. Obviously you get a little sick of having to complete assignments related to one book for most of a term, but I would still say that I found each of them to be an interesting read.

The Stone Angel is perhaps the one exception, as I just think it was a poor choice to have 17-18-year-olds read, because the main character is incredibly hard to relate to or care about. She is almost cartoonishly stubborn and prideful, and the novel is spent looking back on her life as she makes the most obviously stupid life decisions at every step of the way. I guess some English department head thought there was some good lesson in there for students just about to finish high school, along the lines of "don't make stupid decisions purely to spite your parents" or something, but the novel is just so frustrating to read. The quality of the author's writing was perfectly fine, but the story, characters, and themes were far less engaging than the other 3 books I read in high school English class.

I'm not a biggest fan of The Great Gatsby - I respect more than I like, it's no Catcher In The Rye. That said, this trailer looks truly abysmal. There's nothing I hate more in movies than Baz Luhrman's awful visual style; style over substance to the fullest degree. Ironic having that be the guy to direct this.
