Do the ends justify the means? An age old question. A simple, yet important question.

(You can skip this block of words)

A recent example for this question is the "Genophage" from the Mass Effect universe.
Essentially, the newly acquired space warriors, the Krogans, was hired to defeat the hostile and devastating bug-like race, the Rachni. The Krogans defeat the Rachni, and peace returns to the galaxy. However, the Krogan start becoming vicious and start colonizing on already colonized worlds, due to the Krogan's unusually high birthrate, causing their planets to become quickly overpopulated. The other alien races, such as the Salarians and Turians, try to stop the Krogan and so began the Krogan Wars. The war spans over a hundred(?) years and the Council (the galactic rulers) are losing. Desperate times call for desperate measures. And so a bio-chemical weapon, the Genophage, (created by the Salarians) is created. The Genophage significantly reduces the Krogan's birthrate (only 1 out of 1000 births are successful). Using the Genophage, the Salarians and the Turians win the war. The Krogans become an endangered species, causing the once proud race to become essentially bottom-feeders and bitter.

The Mass Effect series constantly touch on this subject and ask for your opinion.
The people that are for the Genophage say that the Genophage was unavoidable and was the only way to stop the Krogan, while the people against the Genophage state that no matter what excuse they use, the Genophage is a mass-murdering weapon.

(Done)

So what is your opinion?
Does the end justify the means, or not?

i wish you would elaborate more cause the means could be worse than what results in the ends. as for the genophage i think it was justified, were they suppose to let the krogan overrun the galaxy?

What end? And with what means?  With that said, in most cases when people say "The ends justified the means" they are saying, "I/we were too lazy to wait for a fair solution so we took their rights away, we killed them, or we plowed over their village."  Anyone who says "The ends justified the means" you should consider punching in the face just on principal because they likely had it coming -- if not from you then from someone.

You have to judge this on a case by case basis. So I'm not going to pick an absolute answer.

If the ends are good, then yes; if the ends are bad, then no.

Only if the good done by reaching the ends outweighs the bad done by the means.

'Bad' ends versus 'good' ends.  Spare me.  The real difficulty with this question is that the distinction between ends and means aren't as easily distinguished as it seems.  Say the US bombs a village of 1,000 people to smithereens and kills a couple terrorists who would have killed 100,000 people if allowed to live.  If all that happened was that 99,000 people were saved on the whole, then sure, sounds like something that would be in the US' best interests.  But another end of this situation is that the US will be expected to use similar means in the future, so the US will have less trust, so the US might not learn about the next group of terrorists, and so the number of people saved steadily decreases and the end may turn out being that the US saved fewer lives by employing unpopular means in the first place.  In general, when "the end justifies the means" is employed as an argument, a means is justified using a short term end and the long term end caused by the nature of the means is not considered.  But when considered as an absolute abstract proposition, a->b (and only b), b is good, therefore a is good, I say yes.  So I voted yes.

...but he was starving.

Em, with regard to the genophage; when I read it put like that, then I would argue that they were totally in the 'moral' right (whatever the fuck morality actually means).

On a larger scale, I think the means are often justified, but not necessarily.

Points for vagueness?
