Cabin in The Woods spoilers
Just watched Cabin in The Woods with me little bro. I really enjoyed the numerous call backs to notorious tropes, cliches and horror movie archetypes. The way it depicted the entire genre as something that could be contained, it was all so familiar and iterative at this point, was a clever twist, along with pretty much outright asking for the genre to change and expand some more. The ending wasn't exactly what I was hoping for, though -- I wanted more! I was waiting for an almighty twist to fucking spin the top of my skull right off. For all of its destructive power towards conventions, it still played it surprisingly safe. But I still enjoyed it a lot, and I thought it had funny writing (with what looked like 90% of the material being given to Marty), solid acting, and was an effective piece of commentary. Maybe the way it all abruptly ended was part of the joke? I just felt like it had a few more zingers in there, though maybe that could of taken it all a little too far. For as much of an... analysis(?) that it is of horror movies, it still largely plays within a lot of those conventions. I know that that's the point, but the lame jump scares still became tedious after a while and it almost faltered under its intentions.
Even still, I sat on my own in the cinema during the credits just waiting for something else to crop up. Kinda felt a little silly since I was literally the only one amongst a full crowd who was curious, especially when I found that there was nothing extra to check out =( Ah well, I'm no movie expert or anything. I watch a lot of movies, but they primarily function as entertainment. I've watched many a drama film and I've certainly felt shieette, but I'm admittedly not quite smart enough to better decipher all of the morals, meanings and themes in some films. I couldn't begin to tell anyone what the fuck was going on during Anti-Christ. Though I also kinda don't want to...
So maybe wanting more could be going against everything the movie stood for, I don't know. Yet I still felt like there could of been something else; I was heading in expecting plot-twist porn, and while I was definitely surprised, I wasn't completely blown away like some people were.
But anywhoo... back on topic, who likes to sit through the credits during cinema viewings? For extra scenes, to contemplate the movie you just saw, or because it happens to have some kickass ending credits music.
