I know, but it's a topic I have been wanting to make for some time and I just said fuck it I'm going to make it and let the dice land where they do.
I persionally think there are a handful of known trolls that tend to go into almost every thread and do their best to derail it or just insult other people and I think it's hurting the site. I'm not going to name names since that breaks the sites rules about singling out users, but I'm wondering if other users feel the same way or if it's just me.
Its not that bad yet, some people take shit too seriously tho, that might go as far as trolling at times just to prove their e-peen, but hey, its not bad.
No. If anything it's gotten better. Remember what it was like when they first launched the site?
It's gotten worse again this year.
Maybe more moderators need to be put on duty. There are some threads that go on for pages and pages that are obviously flamebait, so I have to assume they just go unnoticed because the mods are busy elsewhere.

If i wanna play the butthole veteran who thinks he has something to say just because he's been here from day 1 (i registered two months after launch), sure i can pretend that THE OLD DAYS WERE BETTER
but if i wanna be realistic, no, the forums are fine and aside from the occasional crazies, nothing is out of control
I think that we have a good balance. There aren't that many troll threads, but when there are most of us realize what it is and just post stupid/funny shit, which ends up making the thread brilliant. This is why I hate to see them locked sometimes. I don't think they are a problem unless you are some sort of "internet is serious business" kind of person.

I will see if I can find a couple, but I don't exactly bookmark them to reread them so I can't exactly point out specific examples. It's just something I have noticed while using the site that a lot of threads tend to have a handful of the same people going in and just insulting people and never contributing to a topic.

Some people are too uptight, every forum is going to have trolls or people just not looking to be constructive faster you can come to peace with it the better.

This. I think some people here just don't realize when trolls be trollin' and just feed more fuel to the fire.
Also, there are a handful of users with large post counts who I feel are largely disruptive and should not be allowed to do what they do, but get the benefit of the doubt for whatever reason. Simply having more mods would probably be beneficial as well.
I might be accused of spreading a fascist idea, but I will ignore that and point you guys to a very successful website for developers called http://stackoverflow.com/
The only problem with that semi-fascist idea is that it might go against Whiskey's policy of not pissing the internet off. :P
I'm not voting due to the fact I know I'm not entirely certain. Sure, I feel there are some users I may not like the posts made by as much, but there are no users I actively dislike.

@buckybit: A like to do stuff like that too. I enjoy working my brain around puzzles like that. One I came up with for cutting down on the quote tress was a thumbs up system. Instead of just having people empty post a quote to say that they agree, instead let them click an agree button, and that adds the users name below that post. So then below each post it shows a list of every user that agrees with the post and you won't have all those pointless posts in a thread, and you don't have to worry about the trolling unpopular people that an +/- system has. Just show the most recent two or three names, then have the rest be in a hidden drop down that people can click on if they want to keep it from cluttering the thread.

I think that's something I notice more then anything as well. We all do it from time to time, but it gets a tad too much some times.
Giantbomb has more trolling than most forums due to lenient moderation.....if you don't like it or can't handle it just go somewhere with stricter moderation.

I like it when the forums go all whacky. It creates drama. I love internet drama. I can feel the hair standing up on the back of necks while people type frantically on their keyboards.

Oh and mostly what we see here on Giant Bomb is spam. That's a lot different than trolls. But even spam can have its moments.
