Poll Do you use a screensaver? (240 votes)

Yes 14%
No 70%
No, but I would do if I found one I liked... 16%

I'm throwing together some videogame title screens as screensavers and people keep asking me why I bother, as nobody uses screensavers any more. Personally I'm happy to just make them for myself, as I use them at work and I think it's pretty rad to have the window curtains from The Last Of Us blowing all over my screen when I'm not around, but for the sake of argument: who here still actively uses a screensaver?

If it ain't After Dark it ain't no screensaver.

Short answer is no. No point since my monitor just goes into sleep mode after 30 minutes of non-use.

I do when I have to- work mandated password locked etc. Usually if I have a PC running I'm either actively engaging it or I have the monitor off/disconnected. Desktops though, don't get me started on those!

To be fair, I didn't say "why bother". I just asked if people actually use them. I've put time into far dumber and less useful tumblrs than your one. Your video game screensaver tumblr is actually pretty cool.

Wait... did I just say something nice to Sweep? That's not right. I've got to balance out out...

I used to but Sleeping Dogs wouldn't stop the screensaver from happening so I disabled it and never got around to enabling it again.

I don't, but that's a cool idea. I'm content with my screen just going black, although I always just close my laptop (I don't have a desktop PC) if I'm going away from it.

Haven't since the 90's when that was a thing ha ha.

Also whats with the OP's name missing? I've only just noticed that. Is that a known bug/missing feature? (Yeah I know I can hover his avatar but its still weird it doesn't show.)

It never really pops up because of some conflicting settings on the laptop. It only seems to pop if the machine is unplugged, open, and not in any sort of use (no music, no video). When it does pop, it informs whoever is looking on, "I'm inside you."

My dream... is to make the start up screen as the Dark souls 'flame' loading screen animation. and when I say make I mean cut, past into the part when it starts up. haha
. made.... wish I could do that. break into darksouls, get that animation, slit that into the pc code.

and if you could do that, the loading screen dreams are endless... tech fantasy loading screen.. ect ect ect!

I sometimes enable the flying through space screensaver. Maybe every three years or so, and then disable it again after a week since I have my monitor set to go to sleep after 5 minutes of inactivity anyway.

That flying toasters screensaver on Macs back in the early 90's was pretty cool.

Yes, but only because I can set it to automatically lock when you wake it up from the screensaver so people can't go snooping through my stuff.

I used to use the Bubbles one that came with Windows Vista/7, but it made my PC fan real loud for some reason. So nowadays I just have it set to turn off the monitor after 30 minutes of inactivity.

If someone were to make a screen saver of the Deus Ex title screen then I might be inclined to use it.

I don't use one anymore because it's better (for various reasons) these days to just have the computer go to sleep after a certain amount of time. Screen burn-in is not as much of an issue these days on most monitors so I'd imagine people who "need" to use a screen saver anymore are actually a much smaller pool than they used to be. People who still use screen savers anymore tend to be for security reasons (to set a password to log back in to a station) or just because. I'm not even sure most people even consider screen burn-in problems anymore.

This is speculation, though.

I, personally, am on my computer so much that I never would need a screensaver and again when I want my computer to shut off it's set to sleep after non use for a certain amount of time. My only issue with that is how it sometimes doesn't- but that's another thing all together.

But if i ever get an eyefinity type setup with 3 or ideally 6 monitors i'll go back to some Matrix screensaver and relive 1999 forever.

on my laptop, yeah, because I have it set to lock so it goes to screensaver and locks. My desktop, it just sleeps the monitors.

Nope! I have to many games with instances of cut scenes running long and uninterrupted without inputs so I just turn the screensaver off. You would think the game / pc would know better than to go to a screensaver when a game is running.

Not anymore. I used to do it a a while ago on my old slow ass PC but I ended up having a problem where the screensaver would freeze after a while. Since then I don't use screen savers anymore.

And then the game goes to desktop and you try to go back to it but it crashes and you haven't saved and OH THE HORROR
