"Promise

I won't be watching television in a dark room.

I'll be trying to get out of here."

And there ya go. Glad to see my Japanese major coming in handy, although I wish there was more context so the pronouns could be more precise.

That is pretty close!

I would translate it as:
"I promise I won't watch TV in the dark!
I will sit at a distance (from the TV)"

@3dguy3: In retrospect, that is indeed the better translation. はなれる threw me off since it has multiple meanings, but that makes the most sense considering the rest of the message. You have my thanks. :)

well, it's actually from the closing theme of Sonic X...
Sonic is sitting in the dark watching TV and the maid comes up looking all angry and points at the sign, which is posted next to the TV...

with that context, does the translation become more clear?

@Vigorousjammer: Many anime broadcasts in Japan feature such warnings.  I'd guess that there is some sort of Japanese PSA law about it.

I know very little about japanese, but I'd assume that context would make it "Don't watch TV in the dark!  Sit at a distance (from the TV)" i.e. it's becomes an instruction/demand rather than a statement.

I wish I did, because it would add some relevance to this post. Pepsiman already answered the question, so....

@MattyFTM: Japanese has a few different tenses for doling out requests and commands, neither of which are in use in the picture. It's likely you'd see it worded that way in English, but the Japanese doesn't come across as being that strong. It's a lot more casual and laid back.

@Vigorousjammer: The translations provided by myself and 3dguy3 already cover it anyway, although it's nice to have context anyway. Japanese isn't always as clear-cut as English, which is why it's a pretty common request to have context accompany it in case the text is somewhat vague.
