Does anyone remember back in the 90's how CART was North America's premiere racing series? It was the series that had everything; oval and road/street course racing; all the big name sponsors; multiple tire, engine and chassis manufacturers and some of racing's best drivers. The Andretti's, Unser's, Fittipaldi's, Paul Tracy, Adrian Fernandez, Jacques Villeneuve, Nigel Mansell, Robby Gordan, Gil de Ferran, Helio Castroneves and like. This series was on par and perhaps even surpassed the excitement and prestige of Formula One. Then one day, Tony George owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, decided to breakaway and create the IRL or Indycar Series. His reasoning was that there weren't enough American drivers in CART, he wanted a more "home grown" series. Yeah, that's why you're racing in Iowa now. Soon, CART lost it's viewers but never the excitement. Many viewers were split between CART and Indycar, all the while NASCAR became America's series. Hopefully with open-wheel racing reunited in America, it can return to the former glory that was CART.
RIP CART/Champcar: 1982-2007
Here's a tribute video:
Does anyone remember CART/Champcar?
"Reunited? When did that happen?"
The IRL and Champcar merged last season (2008). The IRL took majority control, Champcar's last race was at Long Beach last year.
"Does that mean the Toronto Molson Indy is going to be a thing again?"
Hell yeah! It's happening in two weeks! July 12 on ABC. Mark it!
"Dude. I live in Toronto, I could just take a bikeride down to the exhibition grounds."
Oh, in that case, catch it on TSN, they won't hide it in TSN2 I swear! :P
"Or I could ride to the lakeshore, like I just said :p"
You might be disappointed, the cars aren't turbocharged anymore, they sound horrible. But, they will have all new turbocharged engines and a brand new chassis in 2011. Hopefully it'll sound and look better than those Indycar "crapwagons".
"You mean I won't be deafened if I go down there? LAME!"
All thanks to party pooper Tony George.
" CART was awesome, for a while it was my favorite racing series. Unfortunately I don't think it will ever achieve the status it once had due to all of the damage the IRL has done. "Yes, sadly, it seems that in the CART vs. IRL war, NASCAR won.
