Am I the only person who actually puts two spaces between a colon and the next word, as proper English intended?  Just curious...

Anyways, Frobro had started a topic sometime this week or last...or whenever...asking people if they were going to see Drag Me To Hell, the new movie from Sam Raimi.  On that thread, I had spoken about how I was willing to see the movie, but I had little to no confidence in its quality due to it being a PG-13 "horror" movie from Sam Raimi.  The last time that Sam Raimi was involved with anything labeled "PG-13" and "horror" was when Ghost House (his production company) brought ho-hum Ju-on to America as The Grudge.  =  /

Yesterday, my brother said that we should see the midnight showing of Drag Me To Hell for my birthday, while I felt we should go see the midnight showing of Up.  Nonetheless, he won out solely because I KNEW Up was going to be awesome regardless.  We got to the theatre, and a measly 40 people or so were joining us for the evening.  My confidence was still fragile.

Then the opening title card from the old school Universal movies popped up.  This raised it.

Within the first five minutes of the movie, I was confident that I was going to fall in love with the flick.

By the end of the movie, the muscles involved in laughing were sore and I could barely speak because I was so out of breath.  My ears felt like they'd been raped by a decibel level of 11 due to Raimi turning the mixes up DRASTICALLY LOUD...and without it, Drag Me To Hell would've been a lesser movie.

Everything about this movie screams "EVIL DEAD" without the chainsaw arm or the massive bloodshed.  The humor is twisted and gross but also playful enough that while an evil spirit is beating up on Alison Lohman, you can't help but laugh...and think about how hard it must've been to keep a straight face through all of the things she endured.  At least a third of the movie seems to be dedicated to seeing what they can put in Alison Lohman's mouth.  Between bile, maggots, barf, half an arm, and everything else...I'm pretty sure that Alison Lohman is immune to all forms of disease at this point!!!

Those scared by the PG-13 rating need to know that while there isn't a lot of GORE in the movie, nor BLOOD (except for one scene that was one of the funniest in the entire film), what you will find are incredibly well-timed jump scares galore, as well as the same sense of humor that made us love Evil Dead so much.  The old lady in the movie is SERIOUSLY one of the most tormenting and hilarious characters possible, essentially taking the place of Ash's evil hand from Evil Dead II.

I honestly cannot praise this film enough.  I've NEVER had this much fun at the theatre, as everyone in the audience was participating and talking amongst each other the entire time.  Seeing this movie is like going to a great party.  It's not only worth the ticket price, but it's worth repeat viewings on a regular basis.

Weren't you saying the movie needed to have crazy amounts of violence?  Don't want to say I told you so, because I haven't even seen the movie, but Evil Dead is fun foremost and it seems like it captures that.

Anyways, glad to read the review and really looking forward to seeing this movie.  Hopefully this weekend.

Though this movie looks amazing, and I'll take your word on that (Because I trust Sam Raimi to make a great movie), Up definitely topped it.

I might see it later this week actually. But until I see it, Up is a billion times better.

I have to say that if there's no comedic value or superb action in a horror movie then I'm most likely not interested. I love being scared, it's just that scary movies aren't very scary. You make this movie sound fantastic, despite the trailers making it look like ass. It's as if they're two different movies.

On a side note, I think that putting two spaces between any punctuation -- be it a period at the end of a sentence, or a colon -- is pretty dumb.

A lot of my friends used to put 2 spaces after periods and stuff. Then I showed them this. You can also check the Wiki for rules on colons, but I'm pretty sure there is no discrepancy between one or two spaces anymore.

As for Drag Me To Hell, I really, really.... really need to see it. Coming from someone like you who had set his expectations low and still loved it, I'm pretty sure that guarantees that it's going to be amazing.

I'm more than positive that Up in an incredible movie.  It says "Pixar" on the movie poster.  That's a stamp of guaranteed quality right there!  Nonetheless, Drag Me To Hell is pretty fucking amazing.  It might be just as awesome as Up.  I'm going to see Up next week when there won't be a ton of whining and yelling kids in the theatre.  = D

But it's proper English.  lol  I don't know, it's just what I'm used to.  Always kind of curious how many people do it or not.  Sorry you don't agree with it.

@jakob187: Bring tissues, this one's strong and powerful from start to end. Very good movie, probably just as good as Wall-E.

Also note, it's the only Pixar movie with blood. Not a spoiler, just an informative point to make. Which explains why it was rated PG and not G.

@jakob187: Well I hate it when people don't use punctuation within quotation marks, take this for "example". People should probably be writing it as "example." But alas, tons of professional journalists don't do this, so as we can gather from this, English is an always evolving language with principals that can be waived.

I do appreciate that you don't put a space between an ellipsis and the following word. Good stuff.

@Snipzor: It takes very specific things for me to cry like a sissy, so while I might not break a tear during this flick, I'm sure I'll love the movie.  It's one of the two flicks I've been waiting for all year.

Also, I can't believe I didn't mention this:  two hours before Drag Me To Hell, I saw Terminator Salvation.  That movie was pretty fucking sweet as well.  I don't understand why people are being so harsh on it.  It is an entity all its own in the Terminator scheme of things, and never once did I feel like I was betrayed.  Sure, there were some plot holes that were unavoidable to ask questions about...but at the same time, I sat back and said "dood, it's all altered time lines because of the organs in Marcus Wright, so Hell...nothing is guaranteed at this point".  However, as much as I hate to say it...Drag Me To Hell just completely overshadowed that thought from my brain.

I really wanna see Drag Me To Hell every two hours for the next week.

@lordofultima: Ah, yes, the ellipsis.  Honestly, I have that I even use it.  It's a lazy man's comma.  However, for me...I don't know...it's a suspended thought process, mainly due to how I actually talk in real life.  You know what I mean, as you've heard me talk.  I'll pause for effect.  LOL  That's all an ellipsis is to me - a way to show my pause.

The punctuation thing in the quotations, I've ALWAYS been bad about that shit.  It's tough for me to ever remember, so I just say "fuck it".  <<<<<Like I did right there...  LOL

Plenty of action, plenty of comedy.  The "horror" isn't really a traditional sense of horror.  You just have to see it.

I was shocked when I saw the early reviews for this movie, and also how it still holds on 95% on ye old all-knowing Tomatometer. I had very low expectations for this one going in, but I've been proven wrong before. I'll be sure to give it a viewing before it's out of theatres.

I can't say that it scared the Hell out of me, but it definitely had some well-done and well-timed jump scares.  Then again, Raimi knows how to suck you into those moments and POW!

As far as seeing it in theatres, Everyone...I have to say that this movie is an absolute MUST in theatres.  Just the sound mixing alone (that overblown Evil Dead style that rapes your eardrums) makes it a necessity to see this one in theatres!!!  If you wait for DVD, you aren't going to get the full experience on this one.

Also, make sure you go with friends.  It seems more fun when you've got people to watch it with.

I will wait until the unrated version comes out. I know some will disagree but a horror movie should not be rated PG-13. If it rated PG-13 then its a pseudo horror movie for moms and their kids because the studio wants to make more money out of it.

I hope so. They always have the initial directors cut and then the studio suites come in and tell him to trim.

Raimi hasn't been told to trim anything. Since Spider-Man 2, he's had full creative control on his projects.

I think the reason that the comedy works so well is because "horror" is inherently absurd and Raimi has a craftsmans knowledge of the genre. After seeing it yesterday, Drag Me To Hell has positioned itself as my favourite movie of the year; Coraline only slightly less so. Seriously, its a great movie: very well shot (filled with lots of his trademark over-the-top flourishes); well acted (Lohman is a great lead, bringing humour and genuine pain, and Long modifies what is essentially a cliched role) and the opening scene is a belter.

Just seen it, and it's total crap as far as I am concerned, If this is the what you Americans consider as good horror I consider that truly laughable. Not at any point during the film did it evoke any degree of fear, and the supposed comedy was just plain, lame.

This film is shite, It has a lame story and shit acting from start to finish. The one decent actor is the girls boyfriends. The female lead on teh other hand is terrible! (?), her acting is dire and quite laughable in places.. And that Indian soothsayer guy is so unbelievable in the role it's shocking, .

EvIl Dead?, don't make me laugh, this piece of shite is not a patch on that great film.

I thought it was pretty bad too. I laughed a bit but it was more bad than 'so bad it's good.'  Also, I saw it in the theater and some folks brought their ~10 year old kids in to see it, with predictable results.

Shaun of the Dead was awesome though.

@lordofultima: i saw the trailers and face palmed. I looked on rotten tomatoes just for kicks. It had a 95% based on over 100 reviews. I was like "WTF".

I saw it the next day. I can totally see where the 95% came from. Hell of a movie (pardon the shitty pun)

Are you one of those people who looked at the premise, saw how unrealistic and campy it was and then decided that's what made it a bad movie? A friend of mine saw the trailer and asked me 'If she can put a curse on people, why can't she pay off her mortgage? This film will be shit.' And that was his final thought.

I did not laugh nor did I jump once. And my friend who had never seen movie predicted the move all the way through it was trash. I have no clue how it has a 95 percent on rotten tomatoes, first time I disagree with them. "
Didn't laugh once?  *sniff sniff*  Yep...if it smells like bullshit...  Even my buddy Aaron who didn't like the movie laughed at the flick.  I just can't buy this for more than trolling.

Nope. Never saw the trailer. I love making people mad :)

I saw the movie about a month ago with my girlfriend, and we honestly thought it was one of the stupidest movies we'd ever seen. Maybe I don't get Sam Raimi's style of directing (I haven't seen any of his previous movies), but it just seemed like a pretty pointless movie that relied too heavily on jump scares and noise. I didn't find there to be any mood or atmosphere to it, just rather generic characters with little personality set in a rather bland version of LA.
But hey, this movie is just not for me. I am not a horror fan at all, and I'm unfamiliar with Raimi's past work, so I'm probably the opposite of the target audience.

Wow readin alot of negative feedback on this movie, i haven't seen it myself but i was honestly expecting it be a decent flick for the fact that its Sam Riami...now it shows that i guess hes been out of the horror genre for too long =/...no gore??...what, i take it there was no Bruce Cambell cameo either?? :O

Nobody here's mad so you should try doing that somewhere else.
