EMF's "Unbelievable" is pretty unbelievable.

This song is a classic, and I've loved it for years. I remember back in the 90's always thinking they were saying "what the fuck" in the background during the chorus, but I dismissed it since they played it on the radio all the time... so I just assumed it was "want the funk" or something.

But I just found out today that the official lyrics booklet that came with the CD actually DOES have it listed as "what the fuck"

That's fucking amazing that they played that song as much as they did on the radio and had all that profanity in-tact, hilarious stuff.

Mind = Blown. Although, knowing me I'm the last person on Earth to know this like how I found out a month ago that Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know" was written about Dave Coulier.

Upon doing some more research, the clip is actually a sample. Taken from one of Andrew Dice Clay's stand up routines, along with the "OH!" during the chorus.

I remember quite a few songs getting away with thinly veiled profanity on mainstream radio in the nineties. This thread reminds me how surprising it is when I constantly hear unedited Money for Nothing on the radio. I don't know how they get away with it in these PC times.

@uniform: Having heard the song multiple times, I never actually caught that until listening to it after reading what you said. Needless to say, it blew my mind.

Holy christ. Brilliant.

Interesting fact: Another song to make it past the censors: Freestyler by Bomfunk MC's! "Who the fuck is Alice, She from Buckingham Palace?"

Along those lines, one of the funniest things I've seen slip past censors is Need for Speed Underground. They had "Get Low" in it, and during the "Aw, skeet, skeet, motherucker, aw skeet, skeet goddamn!" chorus of the song, they removed the cussing with MORE skeets! I think that's actually a little worse, that the entire chorus is just "Aw skeet skeet skeet skeet, Aw skeet skeet skeet skeet!".

That always entertained me.

@XII_Sniper: White people didn't know what skeet meant back then.

Anyways, the censorship rules on the radio are, as long as it's not very clearly hearable as a swear (meaning it's either difficult to distinguish or low volume, such as in the background) there's no requirement to edit it. So only when it's very clearly distinguishable during either the verse or the chorus will it get censored. I think that's a fairly lenient rule, as far as censorship goes in this country.
