I know we have many threads similar to this in regards to video games and movies. Thought it'd be interesting to see all the Duders' song and band preferences.

For me, I think that my top 3 bands, with my top 3 songs by them are:

1) Led Zeppelin - Ten Years Gone; Kashmir; Rain Song

2) The Beatles - Within You, Without You; Dear Prudence; Let it Be

3) M83 - Lower Your Eyelids to Die With The Sun; Wait; We Own the Sky

Feel free to share your favorite bands, or favorite songs, or both!

That is too big of a question to answer in one reply, but I am really loving the Mountain Goats lately. Check out Oceanographers View or No I Can't. And then listen to the rest of their catalog.

I don't have any definitive top 3 bands & songs, so I feel like I could make multiple lists. But to just pull something;

3. Talking Heads - The Great Curve

2. Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - Zig Zag Wanderer

1. King Crimson - Fallen Angel

My music preferences pretty much change every month, bands/songs I love one at one point in time, I could find cheesy/boring a few weeks later. I put this down to spotify just feeding me news songs constantly.

At the moment though ive gone back to listen to some of the old "Girl Talk" (samples songs to make dance music) tracks and quite enjoying them, some are totally cheesy but there is some absolute bangers in there too.

There is one Finnish(maybe swedish) band called "Reckless Love" they are an 80 glam rock style and find myself returning to a fair bit.

Here are some of my favorite songs. I think the song question is more interesting than the band one, because for me personally if you look at some of my favorite songs they are not by my favorite artists or an artist I really listen to that often. Also, I mainly listen to metal music, so the random pop songs kind of stick out to me.

  • One: Metallica (Still probably the closest thing to "the best song" for me)
  • Holding Out for a Hero: Bonnie Tyler
  • Sinead: Within Temptation
  • Dreams: The Cranberries
  • Home: Dream Theater
  • Recoil, Ignite: Mono
  • I Got a Boy: Girls' Generation
  • Delivrance: Alcest
  • Mladic: Godspeed You! Black Emperor
  • Universal Flame: Devin Townsend Project

Oh man....this is really hard to answer, so many songs are running through my head right now. It's easier for me to list artists rather than songs. 99% of The Beatles catalogue, Modest Mouse, David Bowie (Aladdin Sane is a really underrated album) Elton John, Madonna, Vince Staples, Anderson Paak. I also unashamedly love pop music like Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande,Katy Perry, and even the occasional Britney Spears song ^_^ I'm inconsistent....I know...

Look i'm not going to bullshit any of you on this. If you have a proper set up for sound (surround sound, subwoofer, etc). There is one song and one song only you need to listen too. Turn your subwoofer up, and listen to a studio qualify version of Madonna's "My baby's got a secret."

I shit you not, you will not listen to another song.

I always feel like posting in these types of threads is like throwing a single crouton into a large Caesar salad.

I wouldn't rank these, but these are three songs I'm enjoying right now.

Depeche Mode - Home

Recoil - Supreme

Laurie Anderson - Beautiful Pea Green Boat

MssingNo's XE2 (2013): hands down one of the best club tracks ever created. The insane amount of raw emotion and sensuality is enough to move you to tears for no reason, but the song never explodes like a typical club hit. Instead, the track is kept tight and controlled.

It's like the best intimate sex you've ever had, plain simple.

As others have said, this changes rather often. But lately I've been listening to In Flames's "The Jester Race" album over and over, occasionally throwing in some songs from Whoracle. I don't really have a particular favorite song from that album, it depends on the day, although "The Jesters Dance" is a short little number that always gets me pumped to do anything. Also, here's "December Flower."

Ne Obliviscaris has remained a constant favorite of mine for a couple of years now, though. "And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope" was my favorite song from them at first, but then I started listening to their sixteen and a half minute long monster of a song, "Painters of the Tempest Part II: The Triptych Lux", and now I think "Forget Not" is probably my favorite some from them. If you only listen to one song that I've posted here, listen to Forget Not, all of it, without interruptions and with the best pair of headphones you've got. It isn't even recognizable as a metal song until the last few minutes - most of it is build-up, with a violin and acoustic guitar and the bass and drums slowly start getting heavier and more prominent without ever really losing the violin. It is so damn good! Also, worth noting, their songs are always extravagant and flowery and the majority of them are over ten minutes long and they all feature the violin - so not really your traditional metal band at all. I love this stuff.

Those are some of my favorites recently. You can probably guess some of my other favorite bands based on those two - if you like anything I've posted, you should listen to basically everything released by Death, especially The Sound of Perseverance, as well as anything by Opeth. I've listened to so much Opeth over the past several years that they don't really do as much for me these days, though I still really like listening to Blackwater Park and Damnation.

Tough one. As a lot of other people have mentioned, my music taste changes often so its difficult to pin-point an absolute favorite. Even so there are a lot of bands that I've stuck with for a long time so even then its hard to narrow the list down to a reasonable size, but I'll try to limit myself to my top ten.

  • Queens of the Stone Age - I Appear Missing, Misfit Love, Better Living Through Chemistry
  • Sleigh Bells - Rill Rill, Comeback Kid, Crown on the Ground
  • Alice in Chains - Rooster, Would, I Stay Away
  • Soundgarden - Superunknown, Black Saturday, The Day I Tried to Live
  • Pixies - Hey, Gouge Away, Caribou
  • Death from Above 1979 - Blood on Our Hands, Right On Frankenstein, Virgins
  • Nine Inch Nails - A Warm Place, HYPERPOWER!, Where is Everybody? (Things Fall Apart Remix)
  • Miike Snow - Black and Blue, Paddlin' Out, My Trigger
  • LCD Soundsystem - Dance Yrself Clean, Home, Sound of Silver
  • Justice - Phantom Pt. II, New Lands, Genesis

Modest Mouse will probably always be my favourite band because there was a moment where they were arguably the best indie rock band on the planet, not so much anymore, but they released 4 stone cold classic albums in quick succession. Isaac Brock's lyrics and guitar style is completely unique and they had a fantastic rhythm section with Eric Judy and Jeremiah Green back in the day.

  • Fiona Apple - On The Bound, Fast As You Can, Hot Knife

Feels strange that there was some sort of hate for Death's "The Sound of Perseverance." I might be biased though since it was my first Death album.

My top five favorite bands (with top three favorite songs from each, and from different albums so one album doesn't dominate each band's list) are probably (in no particular order):

Gojira: The Heaviest Matter of the Universe, Esoteric Surgery, Only Pain

Queens of the Stone Age: Go With the Flow, I'm Designer, If I Had a Tail

Dream Theater: Wait for Sleep, Space-Dye Vest, The Spirit Carries On

Rush: 2112, Limelight, Cities of Gold

This one is probably a cop-out, but any of Devin Townsend's bands (Strapping Young Lad, solo stuff, Devin Townsend Band, Devin Townsend Project, Casualties of Cool, anything else I may have missed.): Skeksis (SYL), Sumeria (DTP) and Offer Your Light (DTP)

These threads are always impossible for me to answer. There are just too many choices. But, seeing as the lead singer\songwriter was recently diagnosed with brain cancer and they recently completed what is most likely their last tour, I'm going to mention The Tragically Hip. You may have heard of them before, maybe from an offhand remark made by Jeff in gest, but they've been a Canadian institution for decades that don't seem to have had much luck elsewhere.

Here's their youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheTragicallyHip/featured

They've got a varied discography (suppose that happens over the decades), so it can be tough to recommend their songs blindly, but here are a few favorites: Locked in the Trunk of a Car, Vaccination Scar, It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken, Ahead by a Century.

  • Chelsea Wolfe - 'Carrion Flowers' 'Feral Love' 'Maw' 'House of Metal'
  • Martin Grech - 'Holy Father Inferior' 'Ashes over Embers' 'March of the Lonely'
  • DarkHer - 'Moths' 'The Dawn Brings A Saviour' 'Lament'
  • Rome - 'The Torture Detachment' 'The Balled of the Red Flame Lily' 'The Death of Longing' 'L'Assassin'
  • Myrkur - 'Mausoleum' (live album)
  • Shape of Despair - 'Reaching the Innermost' 'In Longing'

Ken Ishii : Extra

Futuristic Japanese techno released on R&S records (from my hometown Ghent) with an amazing video produced by Koji Morimoto.

Squarepusher: Tundra :

I'm a major fan of Tom Jenkinson's work but this one has a special place in my hearth. So many great and slightly fucked up memories are attached to this one I always get a little bit emotional when I play this.

Cocteau Twins: Lorelei

I know my favourite song Like a Rolling Stone (Bob Dylan) but as for bands well right now I'm listening to a lot of Motorhead and the Gorillaz.

took me almost 16 years but it sits near the very top of post rock/instrumental music for me. so much emotion conveyed without words.

generally on a post rock kick. godspeed is also in heavy rotation at the moment.

As with so many other people my music tastes are very varied. I won't get into favourite songs because that would take forever but as far as favourite bands go it would have to be Pink Floyd, Queen and The Eagles.

Also need to mention Tom Waits, as the man is a musical genius, and Ludovico Einaudi, the brilliant Italian composer who I was lucky enough to see in concert at the beginning of October.

There are far too many others to mention.

  • Mr.Bungle - California
  • Dog Fashion Disco - Adultery
  • Diablo Swing Orchestra - Pandora's Pinata
  • Stolen Babies - There Be Squabbles Ahead
  • Frank Klepacki - Command & Conquer / Red Alert Soundtracks
  • Yat-Kha - Re-Covers / The Ways of Nomad
  • Yes - Fragile
  • Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
  • Mindless Self Indulgence - Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy
  • Tub Ring - Secret Handshakes
  • Secret Chiefs 3 - Book of Horizon

And probably in that order.

1. La Dispute: I like all of their albums and songs depending on the mood I'm in. Notable songs would be:

  • The Most Beautiful Bitter Fruit
  • You and I in Unison
  • Bury Your Flame
  • Andria
  • The Last Lost Continent
  • Such Small Hands
  • First Reactions After Falling Through the Ice
  • Woman (reading)

2. Dance Gavin Dance: Only their first 3-4 albums are good; everything since has been bad. Notable songs:

  • And I Told Them I Invented Times New Roman
  • The Backwards Pumpkin Song
  • Alex English
  • Hot Water On Wool
  • The Robot With Human Hair Pt. 2

There are plenty of other bands I like a lot as well, but those are my two favorites.
