I just picked up Coheed and Cambria's new album Year of the Black Rainbow and found it to be an amazing album. Made Out of Nothing (All That I Am) is probably my favorite song right now. You should check it out, it's pretty awesome.
Anyways, this got me thinking, what are your favorite recent albums? I haven't listened to much new music lately and would like some advice on what I should try.
Favorite new album
I anticipate I'll rather enjoy MGMT's latest effort when I... purchase it... soonsies.
Well, I suppose they can do whatever makes them happy. In fact, I guess they're doing their thing, and that's cool (even if I hate it). But I find that music critics (in general, the most elitist bastards alive) and hipsters are really annoying in their love for it. I suppose bands can't help it if a large percentage of their fans are douchebags. At least that's my experience. I'm a musician (only semi-professional these days), I love everything, but I don't buy the "music MUST be art" argument. If you're making music to "make a statement," then it's pretentious, by definition.
BTW, I do have merriweather post pavilion, and find only about 40% of it listenable. There are tons of bands pushing the limits of sound yet manage to incorporate structure and recording quality into the equation.
But hey, that's totally my opinion, it's not fact. And that's cool man!
i haven't bought music in a while. i think the last album that i bought was around November. it was a new band called taking dawn. i saw them at a concert one of the opening bands for all that remains. they kind of sound like dragon force and a rock singing.

It's not that new, but I have been playing Opeth - Watershed constantly over the last 2 years since it's release.
Them Crooked Vultures self titled album.
So much epic talent in one Compact Disc (or is it DVD now-adays?)
Them Crooked Vultures or Slash...
Probably also a bucket of upcoming danish bands, but that wouldn't make much sense in a thread like this.
Edit: Oh yeah! Stings new album is great in its own little snobbish and elitist kind'a way.
The Finntroll recording (Nifelvind) was pretty good. Far better than anything they've done since "Fiskarens Fiende".
Much more agressive and melodic than "Ur Jordens Djup", but it still retained some of the newer elements they've added over to last couple of years, taking their hummpha metal one step further.
Burzum's "Belus" was of course highly anticipated but while it was a good release, and one of the better black metal ones that I've heard in a while, and even though it managed to stick true to his earlier works, I found it to be much more boring than them. The repetitious sound he is so famous for, did not really do much for me on this one. I did enjoy it, true, but not as much as "Filosofem" for example, which I have recently picked up.
So far though, this year, my favourite release would be Galar "Til Alle Heimsens Endar". A folk/blackmetal record that I've written a few words about over at Icon Music Mag (norwegian webzine I work for www.iconmusicmag.com). Got it as promo, and man, that is one awesome release. To create serious sounding folkmetal in general is hard, and when mixing it with black metal you have an even greater challenge ahead of you. Galar did this though, and if you'r a fan of the genre it's worth checking out.
20th of april sees the release of Roky Erickson and Okkervil River. If you ever enjoyed any of the American Recordings of Johnny Cash (even the latest one, which I thought was okay actually), then you should lend that one your ear. Roky has such a honesty in his voice, and songs carry out emotions in such a way that they really make you feel something for yourself.

I really want this album. is the booklet worth a trip to the store? or would i be fine just buying it off itunes?
Thanks for the tip OP.
I'm currently still stuck with Shining- Blackjazz. Not that new anymore, but I can't quit it. Also, Darkthrones latest record - Cirlce of the Wagons is getting some playtime.
The newest album I can think of that is in my favourites list would be:
ohGr - Devils in my Details (DIMD)
Just listening to Flyleaf Memento Mori and I have to say this album is my fav new one so far. I have to say though can't wait till Deftones drop there one soon!
Beach House - Teen Dream
and something thats not the type i usually listen to is Yukon Blonde
" Beach House - Teen DreamYeah, amazing album.

I'm going to have to check some of these out. I didn't realize that Gorillaz had a new album, I'll have to get that. Demon Days was my favorite album when it came out.
Also, @lovecreep, the booklet's nice, the art inside's fairly similar to the style of the cover. I don't know if it makes it worth the physical disc over iTunes convenience though. I still buy my music on CD because I like having the physical media better, but I don't know how you feel on it. No matter what you should make sure you pick it up.
