Helpless Dancer - The Who

When a man is running from his boss
Who hold a gun that fires "cost"
And people die from being cold
Or left alone because they're old
And bombs are dropped on fighting cats
And children's dreams are run with rats
If you complain you disappear
Just like the lesbians and queers
No one can love without the grace
Of some unseen and distant face
And you get beaten up by blacks
Who though they worked still got the sack
And when your soul tells you to hide
Your very right to die denied
And in the battle on the streets
You fight computers and receipts
And when a man is trying to change
But only causes further pain
You realize that all along
Something in us going wrong

You stop dancing.

Running To Stand Still - U2

And so she woke up
Woke up from where she was
Lying still
Said I gotta do something
About where we're going

Step on a steam train
Step out of the driving rain, maybe
Run from the darkness in the night
Singing ha, ah la la la de day
Ah la la la de day
Ah la la de day

Sweet the sin
Bitter taste in my mouth
I see seven towers
But I only see one way out

You got to cry without weeping
Talk without speaking
Scream without raising your voice

You know I took the poison
From the poison stream
Then I floated out of here
Singing...ha la la la de day
Ha la la la de day
Ha la la de day

She runs through the streets
With her eyes painted red
Under black belly of cloud in the rain
In through a doorway she brings me
White gold and pearls stolen from the sea
She is raging
She is raging
And the storm blows up in her eyes
She will...

Suffer the needle chill
She's running to stand...

Still.

Ah, lyrics are one of my largest interests... I dont think i have a single favorite lyric or song, but the lyrics written by Elliott Smith, Conor Oberst and Bob Dylan are beyond genius.

Thrice - Hold Fast Hope:

how can you be sleeping, waves like weapons crash
o'er us, cry for mercy and hold fast hope

who of us is cursed, or do we have to ask
search your souls and hold fast
if no one speaks a word, then let the lots be cast
truth be told and hold fast

white death wakes in black skies, mark your maker's wrath
fear and flames of azure climb the crooked mast
you will yet be baptized, steeped in shattered glass
sink and sing your answer and hold fast hope

as strong arms grip your shoulders like dead hands of the past
pray as you're tossed over, this breath could be your last

quiet and cold, silent and slow
night black as coal, miles here below

find your faith and dive deep, through living gateways pass
lined with death and ivory, and hold fast, hold fast

deep beneath the black dawn, leagues from lightning's flash
ribs will raise cathedrals for the morning mass
steel yourself in sackcloth, roll your heart in ash
scrape your skin with steel wool and hold fast hope
cross your heart and hold fast hope

Imagine- John Lennon

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

Mama,just killed a man,
Put a gun against his head,
Pulled my trigger,now hes dead,
Mama,life had just begun,
But now Ive gone and thrown it all away-
Mama ooo,
Didnt mean to make you cry-
If Im not back again this time tomorrow-
Carry on,carry on,as if nothing really matters-

Too late,my time has come,
Sends shivers down my spine-
Bodys aching all the time,
Goodbye everybody-Ive got to go-
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth-
Mama ooo- (any way the wind blows)
I dont want to die,
I sometimes wish Id never been born at all-

Led Zeppelin - Rain Song

Upon us all a little rain must fall...it's just a little rain.

Devendra Banhart - A Sight Too Behold

It's like finding home
In an old folk song
That you've never ever heard
Still you know every word
And for sure you can sing along

I am not a big fan of lyrics in general...honestly I see the voice as another instrument and dont focus on what is being said...but those lyrics above...just great.

Protest The Hero - Bone Marrow

Thus now he knelt before the ruins, cold of sweat and heat of flame, to vow the severed heads of those who brought the village to its shame.  Those who plundered, pilfered (the) village, (their) lives would now accept the blame.

He would find them all with mighty vengeance paid for in their pain.

Shah'jan, the king of kings wore seven rings and sixty feathers plucked from sparrows' wings.  Growing fat on the throne, he sat like a stone; a man who had never known no hunger, shown no mercy, and in promises broke like a bone.

And there he sat like a stone with promises broke like a bone.  Dispersed about the people, Rostam calls out for his equals in thirst to rise and cast curse, exact the worst revenge on enemies to hang from trees.

The royalty must die...like common beggars and petty thieves.

Those who ride against us will be murdered where they stand.  Let our arrows rain down from the sky to drain the blood into the land.  If a mortal stands before us, strike him down with sleight of hand, and if Heaven rides against us, then God himself must be damned.

                                                                                                          COOL FOR CATS!!!!

The indians send signals
From the rocks above the pass
The cowboys take positions
In the bushes and the grass
The squaw is with the corporal
She is tied against the tree
She doesnt mind the language
Its the beating she dont need
She lets loose all the horses
When the corporal is asleep
And he wakes to find the fires dead
And arrows in his hats
And davy crockett rides around
And says its cool for cats
The sweeneys doing ninety
cos theyve got the word to go
They get a gang of villains
In a shed up at heathrow
Theyre counting out the fivers
When the handcuffs lock again
In and out of wandsworth
With the numbers on their names
Its funny how their missus
Always look the bleeding same
And meanwhile at the station
Theres a couple of likely lads
Who swear like hows your father
And theyre very cool for cats
Theyre cool for cats

To change the mood a little
Ive been posing down the pub
On seeing my reflection
Im looking slightly rough
I fancy this, I fancy that
I wanna be so flash
I give a little muscle
And I spend a little cash
But all I get is bitter and a nasty little rash
And by the time Im sober
Ive forgotten what Ive had
And evrybody tells me that its cool to be a cat
Cool for cats

Shake up at the disco
And I think Ive got a pull
I ask her lots of questions
And she hangs on to the wall
I kiss her for the first time
And then I take her home
Im invited in for coffee
And I give the dog a bone
She likes to go to discos
But shes never on her own
I said Ill see you later
And I give her some old chat
But its not like that on the tv
When its cool for cats
Its cool for cats

This is a tough choice because I feel that lyrics are probably the least important thing about music (unless we're talking about rap)

A lot of the time in music, it's not what you say but it's how you say it.

However, the first song that comes to mind when I think great lyrics in recent memory is "We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed" by Los Campesinos!

I cannot emphasize enough that body
Is a badly designed, poorly put together vessel
Harboring these diminished, so-called "vital organs"
Hope my heart goes first
I HOPE MY HEART GOES FIRST

Pink Floyd - Time

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine
Staying home to watch the rain
And you are young and life is long
And there is time to kill today
And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun

And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter
Never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to nought
Or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desparation is the English way
The time is gone
The song is over
Thought I'd something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
When I come home cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells

Desolation Row by Bob Dylan

They're selling postcards of the hanging
They're painting the passports brown
The beauty parlor is filled with sailors
The circus is in town
Here comes the blind commissioner
They've got him in a trance
One hand is tied to the tight-rope walker
The other is in his pants
And the riot squad they're restless
They need somewhere to go
As Lady and I look out tonight
From Desolation Row

Cinderella, she seems so easy
"It takes one to know one," she smiles
And puts her hands in her back pockets
Bette Davis style
And in comes Romeo, he's moaning
"You Belong to Me I Believe"
And someone says," You're in the wrong place, my friend
You better leave"
And the only sound that's left
After the ambulances go
Is Cinderella sweeping up
On Desolation Row

Now the moon is almost hidden
The stars are beginning to hide
The fortunetelling lady
Has even taken all her things inside
All except for Cain and Abel
And the hunchback of Notre Dame
Everybody is making love
Or else expecting rain
And the Good Samaritan, he's dressing
He's getting ready for the show
He's going to the carnival tonight
On Desolation Row

Now Ophelia, she's 'neath the window
For her I feel so afraid
On her twenty-second birthday
She already is an old maid

To her, death is quite romantic
She wears an iron vest
Her profession's her religion
Her sin is her lifelessness
And though her eyes are fixed upon
Noah's great rainbow
She spends her time peeking
Into Desolation Row

Einstein, disguised as Robin Hood
With his memories in a trunk
Passed this way an hour ago
With his friend, a jealous monk
He looked so immaculately frightful
As he bummed a cigarette
Then he went off sniffing drainpipes
And reciting the alphabet
Now you would not think to look at him
But he was famous long ago
For playing the electric violin
On Desolation Row

Dr. Filth, he keeps his world
Inside of a leather cup
But all his sexless patients
They're trying to blow it up
Now his nurse, some local loser
She's in charge of the cyanide hole
And she also keeps the cards that read
"Have Mercy on His Soul"
They all play on penny whistles
You can hear them blow
If you lean your head out far enough
From Desolation Row

Across the street they've nailed the curtains
They're getting ready for the feast
The Phantom of the Opera
A perfect image of a priest
They're spoonfeeding Casanova
To get him to feel more assured
Then they'll kill him with self-confidence
After poisoning him with words

And the Phantom's shouting to skinny girls
"Get Outa Here If You Don't Know
Casanova is just being punished for going
To Desolation Row"

Now at midnight all the agents
And the superhuman crew
Come out and round up everyone
That knows more than they do
Then they bring them to the factory
Where the heart-attack machine
Is strapped across their shoulders
And then the kerosene
Is brought down from the castles
By insurance men who go
Check to see that nobody is escaping
To Desolation Row

Praise be to Nero's Neptune
The Titanic sails at dawn
And everybody's shouting
"Which Side Are You On?"
And Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot
Fighting in the captain's tower
While calypso singers laugh at them
And fishermen hold flowers
Between the windows of the sea
Where lovely mermaids flow
And nobody has to think too much
About Desolation Row

Yes, I received your letter yesterday
(About the time the door knob broke)
When you asked how I was doing
Was that some kind of joke?
All these people that you mention
Yes, I know them, they're quite lame
I had to rearrange their faces
And give them all another name
Right now I can't read too good
Don't send me no more letters no
Not unless you mail them
From Desolation Row

A few good lines come to mind.
Johny Foreigner- Eyes Wide, Terrified: "Your life is a song, but not this one."

The Mae Shi- Run to Your Grave:
"Don't hold onto your riches,
'Cause when you die you're a slave,
And emotion is a simple test
To the synapse,
Don't let it fool you into thinking that you've got brains"

Imogen Heap- Hide and Seek: "Mmmmmwhatchasay."

The Cool Kids- What Up Man:
"I got a lot and you can't get none,
That ice cream truck just left,
If you run you can catch but it's out cause I got the last one
But I got a box of cones that I'm willing to sell,
I sell the ice cream too,
Two scoops for a bill,
I can build a sand castle without bringing a pail,
And go cat-fish fishing and come up with a whale,
But but you know what that was easy as hell,
Well maybe not the line about me catching a whale,
But if I did it then it's nothing and I did it as well,
Probably easy as it is to move slow for a snail,
Did you know I made this beat with my mouth and a bell?
Just a F.Y.I.
I'm F.L.Y.
And for those who can't spell I'm a pretty swell guy
I caught a lot of fish I think I'll have a fish fry."

Genkai Haretsu - Hide

It aches my heart when I look at you
Cuz if I don't protect you, you might break
You don't know it
But you are my medicine
I'm the only one who can swallow you up

It aches my heart to look at that poor girl
She's selling her beauty for far too cheap
If we met a little earlier
You and me, like this
I would'nt have hurt you
I wouldn't have made you cry

It aches my heart when I look at you
You look very lovely
as you shatter and fall away
I'll be right here, watching you
so go on, smile for me

Therapy This is therapy It's just a therapy

On top of me, you become less like you
It's such a sad and helpless game
This is a nightmare
And this is you
But it doesn't mean anything Because you're gonna be stained

Take you any way you want
Everything your heart desires
Take you any way you...
Now tell me what would you like me to do for you
Take you any way you want
Where no one is watching
Take you any way you...
Let's bring this to limit break

Therapy This is therapy It's just a therapy

"I'm so lonely" you say
And we come right there, and then it's limit break

If you only saw me
It would've been better for you
I thought I gave you everything
Everything was for you

Take you any way you want
My beloved "insecurity"
Take you any way you...
I'll never let go
I want to I want to keep you hostage
in here forever
I'll stay by your side
and always talk to you

Therapy This is therapy It's just a therapy

Without seeing anyone else
Let's live here
In the glass carved time
Together we'll live here

Let's live together
without counting our nights we spent
Let's go on with our private therapy
.... And you become my medicine

Breakdown - Guns n' Roses

We all come in from the cold
We come down from the wire
An everybody warms themselves
to a different fire
When sometimes we get burned
You'd think sometime we'd learn
The one you love is the one
That should take you higher
You ain't got no one
You better go back out and find um

Just like children hidin' in a closet
Can't tell what's goin' on outside
Sometimes we're so far off the beaten track
We'll get taken for a ride
By a parlor trick or some words of wit
A hidden hand up a sleeve
To think the one you love
could hurt you now
Is a little hard to believe
But everybody darlin' sometimes
Bites the hand that feeds

When I look around
Everybody always brings me down
Well is it them or me
Well I just can't see
But there ain't no peace to found
But if someone really cared
Well they'd take the time to spare
A moment to try and understand
Another one's despair
Remember in this game we call life
That no one said it's fair

Breakdown
Let me hear it now
Breakdown
let me hear it now
Yeah
Breakdown
Let me hear it now
Breakdown
let me hear it now
Get down with yo' bad self
Alright

I've come to know the cold
I think of it as home
When there ain't enough of me to go around
I'd rather be left alone
But if I call you out of habit I'm out of love and
I gotta have it
Would you give it to me if I fit you needs
Like when we both knew we had it
But now the damage's done
And we're back out on the run
Fun how ev'rything was roses
When we held on to the guns
Just because you're winnin'
Don't mean you're the lucky ones

Agalloch - Sowilo Rune

Lord Summerisle: "Now, those children out there, they're jumping through the flames in the hope that the god of the fire will make them fruitful. Really, you can't blame them. After all, what girl would not prefer the child of a god to that of some acne-scarred artisan?"

Sergeant Howie: "And you encourage them in this?"

Lord Summerisle: "Actively! It's most important to teach new generation born of Summerisle be made aware that here the old gods aren't dead."

Sergeant Howie: "And what of the true God? To whose glory churches and monasteries have been built on these islands for generations past? Now shall what of Him?"

Lord Summerisle: "Oh, He's dead. He can't complain. He had his chance and in modern parlance. Blew it."

My Back Pages

Bob Dylan
---

Crimson flames tied through my ears
Rollin' high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads
Using ideas as my maps
"We'll meet on edges, soon," said I
Proud 'neath heated brow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.

Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth
"Rip down all hate," I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull. I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers
Foundationed deep, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.

Girls' faces formed the forward path
From phony jealousy
To memorizing politics
Of ancient history
Flung down by corpse evangelists
Unthought of, though, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.

A self-ordained professor's tongue
Too serious to fool
Spouted out that liberty
Is just equality in school
"Equality," I spoke the word
As if a wedding vow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.

In a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I'd become my enemy
In the instant that I preach
My pathway led by confusion boats
Mutiny from stern to bow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.

Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats
Too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking
I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms
Quite clear, no doubt, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.
