Hey GB i got a question . I need to a study on a certain kind of film but i can't figure out what genre it is . The films i am being asked to study are Hard boiled and killer both by John Woo

But i need to gather more movies like these in order to compile by essay .

So 2 questions really :

1. What genre is this kind of film ?

2 Can you suggest some others films that fit into this kind of genre ?

Once i find out these things i should be able to get started with the essay .

Can anyone help me out ?

I confess I haven't seen either of those films, but I always thought Woo was an Action film director. I think Hard Boiled is specifically Hong Kong Action film. I know little about the genre, but apparently The Matrix (Wachowski) and The Departed (Scorsese) were both influenced by Hong Kong Action.

I believe The Departed is actually a remake of an asian film. Anyway, I'm in the same boat as Elston. I don't know for sure and haven't seen the films, but I associate John Woo with action movies.

Asian gangster film is too broad of a term since Japanese Yakuza and Chinese Triad are very different.
Hong Kong action was a legitimate name for it back in the 90's. I remember buying those flicks at an import VHS shop and that was a category in the same way Kung Fu Movie or Chinese Historical Romance were categorized.

I think the genre you are looking for is called " Gun-fu" sometimes also called "Bullet Ballet".   What is particular about "The Killers" and "Hard Boiled" is that they made over-the-top violence as artistic as dance.  Weapons are often handled with flourishes just as any dancer might handle a prop or their partner.   This concept had been around in hand-to-hand martial arts for years, but it hadn't really been applied to gun play before Woo made his films.  Films you might want to look at include (in addition to the other works of John Woo) include:

  1. Wanted
  2. The Matrix
  3. Appleseed
  4. Last Man Standing
  5. Underworld
  6. Shoot'em Up
  7. The Transporter
  8. Mission Impossible 3
I'm sure others will come up with a few more.

both of those films are known as Heroic bloodshed films.
from wikipedia

Protagonists in these films are often good-willed criminals, typically triad members, hitmen, or thieves with a strict code of ethics, which in some cases lead to betrayal of their employer and savior to many of the intended victims, or police officers with a conscience, who cannot be corrupted in any way and usually modeled after the Hard Boiled Detective

if you want to see more of these movies try looking at John woos films quite a lot of them are in this style.
a great one is Face/Off but one you've most likely to have seen is Mission impossible 2
