The meaning to life is to become immortal... I am actually planning to do this one day, either by freezing myself. Or hopefully we can reach immortallity within a good 50 years at least. (with how tech is advancing, I am giving it a good chance.)
Finding Meaning in Life

I'll be older than that. But by then, we should have ways to 'de-age' people in some way. Whether that be with nanomachines or not. where there is a will, there will be a way... my way is to become IMMORTAL!!!!
life has no meaning, all forms of life on this planet were created by scientific processes we don't completely understand yet due to the physical and chemical conditions of this particular rock we live on. we could all be wiped out in the blink of an eye by an asteroid or solar flare etc. as impossible as it may sound we really could be the only organisms in the entire universe that have the capacity for what we know as sentient thought. even if we aren't, who knows if we will ever find any of the others? even if we did, think about the endgame - we can travel anywhere in the galaxy/possibly the universe and we can chart everything about everything. there is no need to ever ask "why" again because all facts are known, unless it is a subjective matter. if there isn't a god or afterlife, then i would guess it'd be hard to find much overall purpose in that life.
emotion, feelings, happiness and sadness and anger, all of these are utterly meaningless in the grand scheme of things. the life of a human means no more than the life of any other creature. i agree with other people to cause no suffering personally, but realistically, there are plenty of things that can affect your brain in such a way that you love to murder or cause pain and misery, and to you it wouldn't be wrong. our minds are very complex that way. anyone could murder or torture anyone else and outside the way our own society responds, there is nothing to bat an eye at this occurrence.
though there are other theories on this matter, for our intents and purposes we can say that all matter on this planet is fixed, nothing is created or destroyed. if we were all vaporized to atoms we'd be worth just as much to the universe as we are now. and this will eventually happen when the sun engorges and torches us all. to me, there is no god, there is no fairness or justice outside of what we codify in law, there is nothing awaiting us when we die, and there is no overall reason to do anything (but don't take my word for it!). life in general is all just a huge amount of cause and effect and you do with it what you will.
SO! as people have said, i'd just try and do what you think you should do. personally i enjoy life quite a bit, and this knowledge i accept as reality hasn't lead to me treating anyone poorly or changing my life much at all. it simply is the way that it is. though sometimes people ask me about it and think i'm a real downer!
btw i'm much more jovial when not talking about this subject. i've had a lot of bad experiences with religion and it has made me pretty steadfast about ways of thinking that don't revolve around mystical forces. not that i dislike religious people...unless they cause people to suffer or spread hate due to their ideas of magical skybeards and their fantastic rulebooks.

The meaning of life is to enjoy it, there is nothing else.
We have a responsibility not to cause suffering in others, and to help alleviate suffering we did not cause.
We don't have that responsibility, that's a personal world view.
That's a stretch don't you think? Wouldn't competition and survival be the basis of natural selection? To be clear I agree with @Hizang's harm reduction sentiment, just not that it is an inherent responsibility.
Early human settlements from before we even had language show evidence of younger humans chewing for older humans who had broken teeth and jaws. It's inherent. It's part of our genetic history. It's what has led to us becoming the dominant species on the planet because we collectively move forward (for the most part until just recently). Crows and some other animals can use and make tools but they don't care for their aged or infirmed. We're the only species to do that consistently on this planet. We have a responsibility to continue to be the caring and empathetic creatures which has allowed us to grow to ubiquity. Empathy isn't solely a human trait but it is unusual that we have a combination of that mixed with opposable thumbs and higher order intelligence so therefore we definitely have a responsibility to make the best use of those resources and part of that is helping to alleviate suffering we didn't cause.@SeriouslyNow said:

This is easy;
Fucking everything and anything that moves. Become one with with the universe by getting inside of it.
deep ;)
Some might say...balls deep. HAH AM I RIGHT?
yes thank you that was the joke.
BALLS DEEP.
*sigh*
Continuation of the species - procreation. What other point is there? You are only truly dead when your bloodline stops existing - no-one has children who then have children. I am an atheist by the way, as that sounds very religious. On the way though, you should have a good time and be good to others.
Why does there need to be a reason? I've never fucking understood this need people have for there to be a "reason". There isn't. Who cares? Do you spend your day worrying about the "reason" an ant exists on the ground? The reason behind the existence of a squirrel? A tree? A mosquito? No. You don't. Because it doesn't matter and it's irrelevant. Why are you suddenly different?
The meaning of life is to give life meaning. The end.
I believe in god but not in the traditional sense, I believe there is something out there which makes me feel like we all one consciousness, life is just a dream in the imagination of ourselves! Our purpose? survive as a species. And since we don't know how safe we are since there is the possibility of aliens, then that means we need to advance technologically to the point where we can explore the whole universe. If we tick that box then... um well its kind of tough... i'm not sure if making life simpler helps us be happy so technology that simplifies our lives isn't always good...
“The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent, but if we can come to terms with this indifference, then our existence as a species can have genuine meaning. However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light.”
Why are we here?
Same reason any creature is here, to breed, ensuring the survival of the Human race.
What are we suposed to spend our time doing?
Breeding.
Should we spend it advancing technology to ease the lives of our children?
That is one way to ensure the survival of the Human race.
Loving each other?
Yes, if you mean breeding.
Obtaining capital?
If that makes you happy.
But... It doesnt matter what a tool was designed to do, only what it can do.
Why does there have to be a greater meaning?
My life is what I make of it, and that is enough for me.
It's different things to all kinds of people. But, do right by yourself and the people you love.
Procreate, raise kids that turn into good people so that they might do the same. Care about your surroundings, animals, nature. Stay true to yourself. Be healthy and try your best.
Read, learn, react, take a stand. Help people out in hard times. Do the things you love to do and the things you don't like to do but that are necessary. Could keep going for a good long time.
I agree with some people here so I am posting this here. Should we sign this petition?

''He has been imprisoned in Nicaragua since November 2010 - sentenced to 22 years in prison on sham charges of drug trafficking, money laundering, and organized crime. Not one shred of evidence was found linking him to any of these illegal activities. After nine months of unlawful delays, on August 29, 2011 Jason was declared guilty in a closed door trial that barred the media and family members from attending. Today he struggles to survive in a deadly maximum security prison called La Modelo.''
This thread makes me want to watch the creation scene from The Tree of Life again, that was really the only part of that movie I really loved.
For those who haven't seen it, here's the first seven minutes. To answer your question, I think the universe is too big to have any meaning put to it. I say just enjoy life and don't let anyone tell you how you should live it.
