I'd go for Forest Gump, just cause, it was the first movie that actually made me look at movies differently (I saw it as a kid)

A lot of people felt Shawshank Redemption was robbed at the Oscars that year when competing with Forrest Gump. While I think both are truly superb movies, I'm gonna go with Forrest Gump. It's one of my all-time favorites, and Forrest is one of my favorite movie characters. I freaking love that movie, man.

Shawshank is probably my favorite movie ever, and while forrest gump was great, i feel like a lot of its success is based on the cliche mentally imparred performance (see Tropic Thunder to understand what i'm talking about)

Shawshank for me.

To be fair it is an incredibly difficult choice. I think the performances and subject matter of Shawshank was a lot more interesting than just a snapshot, (granted a phenominal snapshot.) of several decades of history.

It also has one of my favorite sequences put on film...Ever.
Edit: Oh. And this is a spoiler. For those of you who do not own a television, where this movie is playing on every other month on some station. If you haven't seen this film yet in some form, I have judged you as a person, and that judgment is not positive.

Out of the movies that year for Best Picture, I vote Pulp Fiction. It is my favorite movie next to the first two Godfather films, and I have it nearly memorized. However, of these two, Shawshank gets my vote. It has one of the greatest endings in any film ever and the entire story is structured so you are constantly engrossed with Andy and Red.  No slight to Forrest Gump, however, as that is a damn fine movie as well.

Hrm, i thought Pulp Fiction went on too long. It felt like a movie that should have been done 30 minutes earlier. IMO though.

Shawshank is amazing. I watched it again recently and was completely blown away by it. Forrest Gump is good too, but I think Wierd Al Yankovic's song was better than the movie.

@AgentJ: I never felt like it dragged at all. All the scenes felt relevant and were either funny, violent, powerful or downright disturbing in some way. The nonlinear approach really kept me alert because I wasn't being spoon-fed the story. Watching it a second, third, fourth, etc. time is also a treat because you find all the little details you missed first time around. Yeah, I love that film.

I think that Shawshank wins because I like Tim Robbins/Morgan Freeman combo over Tom Hanks, but both are amoung my favorite movies of all time. I think Shawshank may actually be my favorite, I much have watched that movie 100 times in the past 15 years.

Both are fantastic movies in every way.  I voted Shawshank just because I loved the atmosphere of that movie and the slow pace of it all, with narration by Freeman.  I hate choosing between movies like that though.

Hmm..

Only one thing could settle this dispute- another dispute.

Who was the better narrator? Tom Hanks (Forest), or Morgan Freeman (Red)?

Huh, not Forrest Gump. I don't know why, but the movie makes me angry. It's a little ridiculous really. I'm not saying it's bad, but I can't watch repeated viewings. Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite movies though.

For a man who meets the president and the only thing he has to say is, I got shot in the buttocks.  I mean come on, there should be a better line then that.  If I were to meet the prez and was able to say one line.  It would have to be, "OMG, I just got me a pokemon, time to shove it up my ass ."

Shawshank Redemption is probably my favorite movie of all time. Forrest Gump was great but it doesn't come close to the awesomeness of Shawshank.

When I was like 12 I would have picked Gump but as I got older I realized it is just pop culture reference after pop culture reference.  Shawshank on the other hand is a great piece of storytelling.  I do think Pulp Fiction should have won best picture though, that movie is also filled with pop culture jokes but it feels more important to the movie.

I gotta go with Forrest Gump just because Bubba talking about shrimp is just flat-out great.

"Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it."

Forrest Gump is good (with a few moments of greatness) but overrated. I choose The Shawshank Redemption. That movie or Pulp Fiction should have won best picture at the 1995 oscars instead of Gump.

i think you understood lazarus' words the wrong way.. he was telling speedman NOT to go full retard cuz you go home empty handed while if you show some smarts you get SOMETHING. he didnt say when u show smarts you get it all.. so i dont think Forrest showing some intelligence is the main reason the movie was popular, but him showing intelligence granted him not to go home empty handed.

You're looking to far into what I was saying. Much of the movie parodied how movies like Rain Man and Forrest Gump are like crack for the oscar committee.
