With the recession of the economy in America. Government legislatures have implemented a four day school week (mon-thu) because the costs are too much.
"...The four-day school week has been an increasingly attractive option for legislators seeking to cut education costs. According to the National School Boards Association (NSBA), a handful of states, with mostly rural school districts, are experimenting with altering their school calendar. For small, remote school districts, instituting a four-day school week may provide considerable savings by reducing transportation, heating, and other overhead costs. Supporters of the shortened week also boast of improved morale and increased attendance (by both students and teachers), open Fridays for sporting events and doctor appointments, and more time to spend with loved ones. Opponents of the four-day school week cite problems with long, exhausting class days and finding day care for children whose parents work outside the home. Additionally, educational experts worry that increased time outside of the classroom could lead to a digression in learned concepts while also making it more difficult to offer elective classes. However, the jury is still out, as there is a lack of comprehensive studies."

What do you Giantbombers that go to school in America think about this? I wouldn't mind a four day week at all. I would only be concerned if that means shortened summer break. Although it's only passed in small rural area's and a handful of states, if this idea gets passed, the bill could be carried on through all 50 states.
Four day school week across America?
"I hope this happens. I hate it when school gets in the way of my education."Mark Twain theif.
"Dude, four days would be awesome. But that would probably mean pushing it into the summer. Which is bad. I'd love this. Probably would never happen in my district."Yeah, but the idea is to cut costs. Extending summer will just mean more school days which makes up for the Fridays and they'll end up spending the same amount, so the summer will probably be the same length

"Seriously though, no good can come from this."The less time spent in school, the better.

Holy crap! You mean now teachers will have less time to teach the youth of our country how to pass a standarized test they need to graduate and that the school needs high percentages for to get more funding instead of expanding their concepts of math, literature, culture, history and science?
oh woes us.
It wouldn't really do much but cut into summer vacation time, since all schools need to have 180 days of class per year anyways.
That'd be pretty cool except it wouldn't be passed for this year, so it wouldn't matter to me sense this is my last year of High School. But good luck to those that will be in High School longer than I will.
"I don't care, this year is my last year. But it would be nice to have 4 day weeks..."lol I know...its overrrr for me.
I have the unfortunate luck of going to the "poor boys" private catholic school in town (Baltimore). This school also happens to be extremely conservative in terms of faculty and students, so we would probably keep a 5 day week just to spite the democrat-run public schools.
I don't know... I grew up in a rural area, so I can honestly say a lot of those kids need more school (well, a better education anyway), not less.

You stole my user icon but anyway 4-day school week will not happen if anything it will go up
really, the only thing i want to eliminate from school is homework. i dont care if they make 9 hour days every day of the week, i just want to be able to get off school and have the time to do whatever i want instead of thinking about doing 52 math problems.
The only problem with this is that the teachers wouldn't want to give us a ton of homework on a school night, so we'll get tons on the weekend, which would probably be worse. Or the teachers won't care and just give us a ton of homework on school nights.
"There's so much goddamn time wasted in school that you could finish a semester in two months if they didn't fuck around so much. Not exactly 2-3 months, but it could be shorter. I wish they would categorize kids into different time schedules for school. I mean like, if some people can work quicker, and are more dedicated, they finish school earlier (i.e. they would finish a school year early). Hence, this would make the underachievers try harder.

The concept of "homework" is absurd. A lot of people don't even do it, so what's the point? Get as much work as you can done in a day (Come on, an 8-3 school day is a fuckload of time to do work), and just refresh study on weekends and nights.
More work should be done in schools rather than at home.
"It wouldn't really do much but cut into summer vacation time, since all schools need to have 180 days of class per year anyways."It's far, far too late for this thread, but this needs to be emphasized, at least if me and Col_Cool are both right in our recollection that the day count is controlled on the federal level and therefore can't be changed by states trying to cut corners.
Shortening summers and disbursing "summer" vacation throughout the year is a concept that's been right around the corner since I was a little kid. Never happened, at least not on a large scale.
You know what? My senior year of High School had the four day school week. This was in the frozen tundra of northern British Columbia, though. Basically a blip in the radar in the middle of no where.
The weekends were fantastic, but the days were (slightly) longer and the work load was larger. Expect more homework as teachers still have to cram in the curriculum somehow. But you can't fault an extra day to sleep in.
My school buys new gym equipment every 3 hours, I swear. Move that up to every 6 hours, and our money problem is solved. Daaaaaaaaaaaamnit.
