I used to be part of a small internet community, some of those guys were my friends.

Now, not so much. Forums are too big to make attachments now. Closest thing I have to online friends are the people I play StarCraft with, but I was friends with them IRL first.

would these people have no problem spotting you $10 if they have it?

yes=friends

no=just people on the internet

Someone lending you money is not really a good metric for telling who is your friend.

"There not your friends they are just people you talk to on the internet."

They can be friends, still I consider friends people I have some degree of confidence with, in the internet or off.

None of us are actually people; we're all just an elaborate AI. It's probably wise to not get too attached; we may try to kill you some day.

Of course we're friends.

There seems to be an Error with Unit TK-421, Codename: TehFlan. It seems to have told one of the organics about our secret.

I can't stand it when people don't acknowledge that the internet is comprised of real people.

Once you meet those people outside the internet then I assure you that you´re gonna wish you´ve never call them "friends", that is such a strong word for me I´ve few friends and a bunch of acquaintances, but seriously people on the internet loose all the charm they had once you actually met them outside.

It's true that there are real people on forums and elsewhere but like school just because you go to the same class together that doesn't make him/her a friend, I think it's funny that everyone who is active on forums has at one point talked to a murderer, a pedophile, a robber, and maybe even a police officer at one point and never thought about it because no one knew. Heck I could even be one of those things I listed.

depends what the word "friends" means to you.

Internet friends can be the same thing as real world friends.

You can make friends over the internet, but I wouldn't call everyone you talk to on the internet a friend. Like if there's people you regularly converse with on the internet and play games with, they could be considered friends.

I've made plenty of friends on the internet, just not on Giant Bomb. Not that I don't like people here, I just consider you all part of my fantasy debate club.

They're not real friends unless you hang out with them in real life. As much as you can talk to someone online, until you talk to them in person and know them by more than just how their speech seems based on text on a screen, they are not part of your social circle.

That being said, if you play games with people online and know their voices for a long time, meeting them in person would be much easier than some forum goers meeting in person. It's like, "Oh, I know your forum name and avatar. And that's it. Awkward when we actually meet since I hear your voice now."

Do regular Skype video chats make it any better? Where do you draw the line where you can tell what a person is like in person through the internet?

You should tell him next time he's having beers or something with his friends: "These are not your friends, these are just people you talk to while drinking beers". Or better, don't do it. But I might be tempted to do it. It's just emotionally disrespectful to say something like that, whether he has a point or not is secondary.

I have friends I've met through games and such that I talk to almost daily, even if we don't play.

But not on here. None of you can be my friend. Unless you buy me some pizza then we can be friends.

I was on my iMac one day and my dad cane in and told me dinner was ready, he told me to get off the computer and come down. I told him I would I just needed to tell my friend something, he then looked over and saw I was on the Giant Bomb Forum and told me.

"There not your friends they are just people you talk to on the internet."

Do you agree or disagree with his statement?

I still love you as much as a noob possibly could.
