So I'm not that big of a gamer during the semester. I don't get games that often either but over the last 6 months or so I have just succumb to steam and their freaking insane sales. First it was over the winter when I purchased nearly every freaking thing on sale during the holiday sales last winter. Then I purchased Freedom Force pack, Braid, Audiosurf, Red Fraction Guerrilla, portal, ALL THE X COM GAMES, Trials 2, Torchlight, Trine, Medieval 2 and its expansions, Mass Effect, L4D, Beat Hazard..... and today I just purchased the freaking Civilization 4 pack.
I just keep purchasing them........WTF Steam seems to have some strange power over me, these sales are so f'ing crazy that I cant not buy these things. Yet I'm fairly certain I won't play many of them EVER. I'm just building a stupid ass collection of great games lol
Anyone else out there get caught up in steam fever?
God dam you steam!!

" Ditto on civ 4. I haven't completely grasped all the game mechanics but I can't fight the urge to keep playing. "Take heart, Civ 5 is around the corner :3
Yeah. Sometimes it's so bad for me that I get a game I already own, but it feels more convenient to just buy it for $2 than look for it in my closet.
" Hmm, I'm not caught up by the so-called "steam fever". Even though I check their deals every day. If you know you aren't going to play it... don't buy it? /selfcontrol "but you might wanna play it someday so why not get it while its on special?... right?
" @JA050N said:Thats why I didnt but Civ 4 when it was on sale. I would never play it as soon as 5 comes out" Ditto on civ 4. I haven't completely grasped all the game mechanics but I can't fight the urge to keep playing. "Take heart, Civ 5 is around the corner :3 "
We need a Steam Users Anonymous or something. As it was said before, welcome to the club! It only gets worse from here....
Been on sale several times now, guess they're trying to get as much as possible out of it now when 5's approaching. Still, it's not released in quite some time, and 4 is still an awesome experience!
As for Steams addictive qualities, the big thing for me is the collection mentality it has. Something about going to my "My Games" tab and seeing such a huge list of games makes me feel good.
" I just purchased the freaking Civilization 4 pack."You could have it off direct2drive for a fiver two days ago.
I love Steam. I pretty much get all my games through Steam, and have taken advantage of some great deals. Torchlight for ten bucks, Left 4 Dead for eight bucks-they've got amazing deals. But the thing is, when you lose control of yourself and start buying every deal that comes up, deals, rather than having you pay less than you would have, actually have you paying more than you would have. I remember I almost bought the id software pack back when it was on sale (50% off I think it was). I owned almost every id software game already. But I was delirious because of the sale and the idea of having every id game conveniently in my Steam library. But I resisted, installed the id games I wanted to play again from my old discs, and I was better off.
Just remember- when deals are having you spend more than you originally intended, stop. I set out to buy the Quake 2 expansion packs off Steam (which I did not own). Ten minutes later, I had almost bought the id super pack, about to spend thirty five bucks when I was only going to spend ten. Every id game for thirty-five bucks was amazingly tempting-but ten bucks for what I actually wanted, actually didn't own and actually would play was the more sensible choice.
I'd never pay for a game I know that I will never play even if the sales are great.
I don't have the problem that most people have, I guess.
I like to only buy games on Steam when they are titles I really wanted to buy but there were other games out at the same time and financially it didn't work out to get them all. I wait til there aren't releases I want and them snatch them up on Steam. So I have not succumb to this same sort of problem.
What?...Oh yeah, that isn't gonna help with your Steam problem.
" Hmm, I'm not caught up by the so-called "steam fever". Even though I check their deals every day. If you know you aren't going to play it... don't buy it? /selfcontrol "but... I think to myself that someday when I run out of things to do while traveling or whatever, I can always play Max Payne 2 on my laptop or something. I didn't buy THAT much, but I did buy some games that I have never launched yet.
