You know, that one album that you love so much, and leaves you incredibly surprised that no one else seems to know of? Here are mine:

Built to Spill - Perfect From Now On
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over the Sea

Well it's just two different tastes. Massive attack rarely goes off time... portishead? The third album is brilliant.

Maybe if I'm ever bored enough, I'll check it out. Also I've always wondered this, is it pronounced Portish-Head or Portis-Head?

Yeah, I know it's trip hop. I love groups like Gorillaz, Frou Frou and Morcheeba. And I agree that Tricky is shitty as hell.

Y'know for some reason I never considered Gorillaz as trip hop. I like them but never categorized them like that. Do you listen to stuff like The Go Team? What the hell is that category?

It's actually the music that is on the first LBP trailers. I was really surprised to hear them there.

I assume you're joking? Especially considering Revolver is one of the best selling albums of all time, as well as one  of the most critically acclaimed.

All of these are very well known albums. Some are even considered the greatest albums of all-time. Are people posting albums they've heard of, but haven't actually listened to? This thread is about those obscure gems you come across that blow your mind.

Used to be my favorite, and ITAOTS used to be my fave song also. It's still in top 10 for songs, and 4 for albums, but they have been overtaken.

But it's hardly as obscure as it once was. Any thread on 4chan /mu/, the music channel, where you ask people for music recommendation gets at least one, usually 5-6, mentions of ITAOTS.

Specifically calling out Black_Rose and Earthbounder, most of what you listed is incredibly popular.

I listen to a strange mix of things, but two albums I like that many don't seem to are Mindless Self Indulgence's Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy and Trickster by Kidneythieves.

And by the way I love the first two portishead albums, as well as the first two massive attack albums, but I also hate tricky.  Go figure.

Right, I know, but 4chan is hardly mainstream. I can also remember when the Pixies were obscure.

This probably should be in the Music Discussion Topic, but what the hell.

I'm gonna say Darktown by Steve Hackett. A really great example of modern prog rock, with some truly epic guitar work. Here's the title track:

This is one of my favorites, too. Or maybe I like Milk-Eyed Mender more. I don't know.

Aeroplane Over the Sea has a few fantastic songs, but the overall album never really got me hard.

I don't know how popular it is, but I think my favorite album of all time is:

Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? - Of Montreal.

Skeletal Lamping (They're new album) absolutely blows. I've never been so disappointed in my life.

Oh, and:

Chutes Too Narrow - The Shins.

lol... When I posted for the first time I hadn't read the "never" on the title of the topic, sorry. XD
I have actually heard all albums I mentioned. Now to answer it properly I will mention some albums from the bands I mentioned.

Meddle - Pink Floyd (It doesn't get as much attention as it deserves)
Sandinista - The Clash (It has way too many songs and most people aren't able to fully listen to it but there are some hidden gems here)
R.E.M. - Fables of the Reconstruction

Both of those are insanely popular. Methinks you've missed the point of the thread: to list obscure albums you love, that nobody else seems to have heard of.

My bad then, lemme try again :

Finntroll - Nattfodd   If you feel like you're angry but you could drink and dance also, that's the bomb. Black Metal + Polka = Finntroll.
Star One - Space Metal    Arjen Lucassen had this project with various artists, its basically a compilation of songs about Sci fi movies he liked. the songs are awesome. Check it out.

yeah people are completely missing the point as far as obscurity goes

Cody Chesnutt-Headphone Masterpiece
Jedi Mind Ticks-Violent By Design
Saul Williams-Amethyst Rock Star
Vaselines-The Way of the Vaselines
Operation Ivy-Energy
Rakim-The 18th Letter (not really obscure, but not nearly enough "hip-hop fans" checking for it)

I know. That topic is such a terrible idea. Music is such a broad subject with so many different ways to talk about it, that it's pretty narrow-minded to put all music discussion in a single thread. Next you'll start seeing "Movie Disscussion Topic" and "TV Show Discussion Topic" and "Book Discussion Topic" and "Religious Discussion Topic". That way we can eliminate all that pesky discussion cluttering up our forums.
