Celebrating when the Canada essentially became a country on its own right. Before it was a country it was basically a bunch of British colonies with the province of Canada. Before that, it belonged to the Natives (the buying/negotiating/taking of their land... I'm not too happy about)!

Frankly I'm surprised 1812 isn't celebrated a bit more - it would irk a lot of Americans for sure, but as a country, there's something to be said about being able to work together to defend itself as a nation.

Yeah it was a matter of being born and raised in a country that my parents aren't from, and then they're each from their own corner of the world, and I kinda just lucked out.

Between today, the 4th of July and Bastille day on the 14th, July is always a very celebratory month for me.

If you want some stereotypical ways to celebrate, at some point today why not grab some beer that's at least 7% alcohol, have some poutine, perhaps cook some "back bacon" for breakfast, or have some nice and dirty Kraft Dinner original. I might consider starting to even have the conversation about apologizing for pop icons when people from the states want to apologize for Barry Mannilow, Britney Spears, and Fred Durst. ;P

The key difference being that America started a war to leave Britain, while Canada just asked the Queen to sign a piece of paper saying we were leaving. Which is why the British Monarch is still technically the head of Canada when they is in the country. Canada exists because of a British law.
