HD or SD?
So, for everybody that still enjoys playing their old systems, what kind of TV do you use? Do you have an SD just lying around for times like that, or do you pump them up into 60 inches of pure 480p?
I almost replied to this thread completely incorrectly then, I thought you were talking about playing NEW systems in SD, when you could in HD. Who would rightly do that? Haha.
Anyway, in answer to the question I feel that plating something in SD on an HD TV makes the quality visually worse - LCD's don't cope well with low res. So yeah, I'd attempt to fish out an SD TV if I wanted to play my SNES.
HD but it makes some games incredibly ugly like jet set radio future... but most of the older games Ive bought like sonic etc and anything on the Megadrive collection looks fine. also King of fighters XII somehow manages to look much worse in HD than in SD.
" I swear there's a thread already like this..... "I made a thread about this a while ago, but it's old and weirdly named so I don't blame you for making a new one.
Anyways:
I just use a HDTV because I no longer own a SDTV. I would use an SDTV but I don't play old consoles nearly enough to justify having one just for that.
I have a small 14" SD TV spare that I have an N64 hooked into but my Sega Saturn is hooked into my HD TV because it looks virtually the same except for the difference in screen size (14" vs. 22"). The Saturn is new so I keep it on my HD TV but after a while im sure ill hook it up to my SD TV along with my N64 once im not using it everyday.
What kind of scaling are you all using to play these systems in HD? cabling solution?
For me anything PS2/Xbox 1 and older (most importantly to me, my Japanese Saturn and Dreamcast) looks best on a good quality, non widescreen CRT television through a SCART connection.
If I plug my older systems into a new TV it just looks like shit as the screen has a native resolution and can't multisync properly. I love my HD widescreen TV for movies and new games, but it's just not suited to older systems as well imo.
Scaled up, I think older games often look worse anyway (like via emulation on PC or XBL).
I used to hate the concept of HD. I don't do HD video online simply because my internet sucks, but if on the 360 Netflix it comes up as HD I'm happy. I don't have an HDTV though.
I recently had to temporarily move my PS3 to another 42 inch LCD. Problem was I couldn't take the HDMI cable and had to settle with 480p stretched out. It looked horrible in comparison to 1080p.
I'm still using a really big SD TV that we got years and years ago. My parents say almost every week that we are going to get a flatscreen the following weekend but it never happens.
