I know the title is a little lame but I didn't fee the need to fake it and trick people into reading this.

Anyway, I need help with motifs. We're supposed to do a poster on a literary device, on it should be the device(obviously), the definition, an example and a symbol that represents the device.

For the example I picked the fight club in fight club. The help I need is, first off is that example shitty, second the symbol....Wtf symbolizes a motif....
thank for help in advance and just in case you need it here's the Wikipedia definition of a motif.

In a narrative, such as a novel or a film, motifs (pronunciation) are recurring structures, contrasts, or literary devices that can help to develop and inform the piece’s major themes. The narrative motif is the vehicle by means of which the narrative theme is conveyed. The motif can be an idea, an object, a place or a statement.

Edit: Sorry I wasn't clear, I need a symbol that represents a motif, fight club was just the example, the symbol could be anything, a shoe for all I know, fight club has nothing to really do with this.

If you need help with math, science, or some social studies I may be able to help.  English on the other hand, it was all I could do to get through those classes in high school and college.

I guess for Fight Club it would be the Narration that goes on through the whole film.
Maybe I'm confused and wrong or maybe I'm a genius.

Well, one of the motifs is that pain helps you know who you are. The acid burn on the hand symbolizes this.

@GoodKn1ght: well, the literal struggles were the fights themselves, so perhaps that's the motif?  They fight to seek self-enlightenment and then once the secret society is solidified, they fight for the sake of their society as one.

I should mention I tried creative writing for a while, then came to the conclusion that I was only good at the mechanics of english; a grammar-correcting automaton.

I have read your post 3 times all the way through and have almost no idea what you are asking for. All you want is a literary work and a motif from it?

Oh, okay.
Well, in the Scarlet Letter, the A represents a loooot of different motifs... adultery... societal shunning...
or, in The Metamorphosis, the cockroach Gregor Samsa becomes is a symbol for the motif that the rest of society sees him as vermin...

@DarknessMyOldFriend: no just something that represents a motif, yeah I need to work on my clarity
@ThatFrood: Yes the A works i think, the only problem is that's more a symbol in the story. See my problem is that a symbol for a motif would be just a symbol in the context of the work....I don't know I'm glad this is due monday I'll talk to my teacher tomorrow.

And yes haha I misspelled english, go fuck yourselves.

Uh, in the works of Anton Chekhov, the departing trains are symbolic for the sweeping social changes of the late 19th century, and how they resulted in a loss of all that had once mattered to people (family, happiness, acknowledgement of death/suffering [see Leo Tolstoy]).

Is that what you're looking for? Because if not I'm really unclear as to what you're asking.

@GoodKn1ght: I'm confused. You're saying you need a general symbol for a motif, not a story specific one? Like, hearts symbolize love? Or blood symbolizes passion?

A motif in Fight Club is the whole "I am Jack's..." thing
I dunno, what other thing are you looking for?

In Persona 3 the Evokers, or more accurately their gun shape, fit in with the games overall theme of mortality.

I don't know if you're able to use video game examples, though.

Dude, really just try typing in the name of a popular work that you yourself have read/seen into google and add the word "motif" at the end. You'll find tons of pages talking about it.

For example, a google search of "Star Wars Motif" results in: http://www.sparknotes.com/film/starwars/themes.html

"lord of the rings motif" results in : http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/fellowship/themes.html

Tool around in sparknotes, you'll get some ideas.

Oh, gotcha. Well one of my favorite that seemed to pop up in every single book from 6 to 12th grade was rain. It almost always seemed to rain when something shitty was going down in a book. Also don't forget the whole white/purity vs. black/corruption thing, those are especially vivid in a visual medium.

@GoodKn1ght:   Look up "The Scarlet Letter", "The Crucible" and Boar's Head from WIlliam Goldings "Lord of the Flies".
