How do you type?

So I just swapped my keyboard back to the shitty, old, default, black dell one because I hated the F keys on my other keyboard.

After taking the keys out, giving them a good wash, then replacing them, I of course tested them by typing a few lines in notepad to see if everything checked out.

Whilst I was doing this, I realise I type in (what seems to me) a weird way. I use every finger on my left hand (thumb for alt, but not space bar) but only 2 fingers and the thumb on my right. I just found it weird because my right hand covers more of the keyboard yet I only use the index and middle fingers (thumb for space).

I'm right handed, and my left hand is starting to take over apparently. Perhaps this has something to do with the fact that I've usually got my right hand on the mouse?

I use all of my fingers, but can only reach approximately 50 WPM, even without looking at the keyboard. Room for improvement.

@WilltheMagicAsian: I'm roughly the same. When I try using the other fingers on my right hand for more than punctuation, I end up thinking about placement and just end up going much slower. S'pose I could teach myself how to type properly, instead of what I actually did by teaching myself to play videogames on a keyboard while occasionally typing.

with the index and middle finger of both hands. a bit like a t-rex might, though the other fingers do creep in from time to time to press things like shift or backspace. i would say its 80% index and middle.

Right handed. Type with full left hand and primarily first 3 fingers of right hand (though I occasionally hit keys with other fingers as well. Got 85 WPM from a online typing test just now. Can probably do better when fully attentive and not typing on a stupid laptop keyboard :)

Learned to touch type using Typing of the Dead, which is pretty interesting considering it does certain things to your keyboard if you do not have an American setup... :P

Edit: Spent a year converting to DVORAK, but the problems I suffered when I needed to type Swedish (åäö, specifically), made DVORAK not really work too well. I know there's a SVORAK variant for that, but it eschews most of the original teachings, so... no.

I just type with the two fingers next to my thumbs, except to click special buttons like space/leftalt (left thumb), ctrl/capslock/shift (left pinky), enter (right pinky) etc. I get about 60 wpm like this, which isn't great but at least it *looks* like I type fast because my fingers have to move so much :D

Yeah, I kinda do the same thing, prioritizing my left hand and not using my right one as much, which I've always found weird since I'm right handed.

QWERTY style (although oddly enough, having to type out QWERTY slowed me way the hell down).

I'm the same as you, I've tried to use all of my fingers but it fucks me up, I type at around 80 wpm.

You know I wasn't exactly sure until I took a look at what I was typing. I see that I do pretty much the same as the OP. I tend to favor my index finger on my right hand and use the thumb for the space bar, but rarely will I use any other fingers on that hand. On my left hand, I'll use four of my fingers. That excludes the left-hand thumb since I would only use it for the space bar and that's performed by the right hand. I guess because I am right-handed, I favor the most adept fingers on that hand.

Really, though, I type predominantly with my left hand. Makes sense, since I'm left handed, but also makes since because there are more common letters on the left hand side of the keyboard. You can spell a lot of things with just the left hand side and not many with only the right.

Doing things the right way is overrated. Also, I type pretty fast and I don't strictly follow the damned "home row keys" lessons I was taught in early grade school.

I use my right hand exclusively for shifting, arrows, and periods.

I also never use my left pinky.

I actually use all the fingers no both of my hands, though not all as often as others. It kind of depends what I'm writing.

I use my forefinger and index finger from both hands, but nothing else really. I tend to hit the space bar with my forefinger, and the actual keys with my index fingers. It's an unusual setup, but I'm left handed in normal life so strange techniques aren't too unusual to me. The weirdest part of it all is the fact that I'm able to get 100WPM should I try for it. Normally I just lurk around 80 or so, since there's no reason to attempt to type quickly unless I have some motivation to do so. At the moment I'm watching some friends driving around in Forza and typing at the same time.

I type with all ten fingers, though I don't use my pinky fingers all that much. I also much prefer using the numpad than the regular number keys (mainly as a consequence of my job).

Pretty much use all fingers equally. I'm good at typing without looking too, in fact I typed all this without looking.

Scratch that, just noticed I mostly use my index fingers. Still quite fast though.

I use all fingers with my thumbs resting on the space bar (right hand moves to the key pad instead of the numbers at the top)

I use three fingers on both hand and my left hand thumb to hit the space bar. I can do about 75 WPM which isn't too bad.

I'm pretty similar. I type a lot more with my left hand than my right hand. But a lot more letters that I use are on the left side of the keyboard I guess? A, E, C, D...in fact, I just noticed I reach over to hit the keys on the right side with my left hand sometimes. Try typing, "hello, how are you?" and I hit the space key with my right index finger.

Maybe typing is like using chopsticks: my way isn't the "proper" way, but it works for me just fine, and Chinese people are impressed that I can use chopsticks (even though I've lived in China for almost 2 years now...).

I type sloppy as fuck.

For the most part I use all my fingers on the keys that they're supposed to hit, except i always use left shift. Fuck right shift.

Same here. FPS gaming has given me amazing accuracy with the first three fingers of my left hand while I make mistakes all over the place on the right side of the keyboard using all of the fingers on my right hand.

Had never ever thought of the way I type except for how fast I type. I type using my index finger and middle finger as well as my left thumb for the spaces and the alt+tabbings and what not. Thinking about how I type made this post more than 3 minutes to write out. WTF? And all hail to left shift.

I type quickly but I can only use one finger at a time but I always type with two hands.

I look to my left at my personal assistant and have her type every word I say. Even when I say things like "Put a jolly emoticon in there! Oh yeah, that one! He looks so happy!" :D

I actually use each digit. I'm not a fan of having my hand on a mouse constantly. I blame being on a laptop for so long.

Anybody that doesn't use their thumb for the space bar is a monster.
