Personal life choices are personal life choices. They aren't a reason to dislike someone or be judgemental about them.
Perhaps thinking about it from the other side of the fence is in order. As a smoker, I can tell you that I get plenty of dirty looks when I light up in a public place like a street corner or something to that effect. I can also tell you that I've gotten many disapproving lectures from random strangers just for having a cigarette. We've made plenty of concessions to non-smokers over the last fifteen-twenty years. From not smoking in doors to even standing twenty meters from doors, and yet people still generally act like assholes about people smoking. It's more than a little annoying to visit a website you like and see the same condescending behaviour there as well.

Absolutely, absolutely this. While true, there are asshole smokers who don't care that they blow their smoke into a crowd of nonsmokers, there are non-asshole smokers too. Just like there are asshole drinkers who get in their car drunk, and non-asshole drinkers who are smarter than that.
In my state we've had to make a lot of concessions too. Even smoking parlors - places made years and years ago specifically for smoking, have been shut down. And unfortunately, legislators have people like the OP by the balls, because they can create a bill for a new tax, and the money could be going to Exxon for all the guy knows, but as long as the bill says "More taxes on cigarettes!" he's gonna vote for it.
I quit a month ago, after 2,5 years of smoking. I just said one day, fuck it, its not worth it. now i find it disgusting...and i have a crapload of money. today is 1 month since i quit and i saved about 80-90 bucks. i also started a diet and now im going to the gym, lost 11 lbs int he past 2 weeks and im feeling better than ever so after all maybe if i didnt smoke so i could quit it i would still be 11 lbs fatter and with a bag of cheesy crap in my mouth right now
I smoked for about 2 months when I was 12 or 13, but then I grew up and stopped doing it. I found myself not being able to walk more then two feet before I was coughing and weezing, I used to be able to do at least 4 feet, plus they were just too dam expensive. My mother smoked most of my life, so I'm pretty sure my lungs are fucked anyway since I had to live in a house full of second hand smoke.
Something rather weird did come of it. Even though I only smoked for that short of time, I will just randomly find myself craving for a menthol a few times a year. It lasts for a few days then goes away, but it always strikes me as being weird to just get these random cravings for one.
@mircica: Not necessarily. I think it's different for everyone. I was the opposite. After I quit smoking for a while I had gained 20 lbs in about 3 or 4 months. And I wasn't even eating really unhealthy or anything.
I used to smoke the occasional cigar in bars (before smoking got banned everywhere). I smoke cannabis, but I haven't had any since New Years Eve. Cigarettes are just a waste of money IMHO.
@TooWalrus: So do you think that we should repeal most workplace safety laws as well? Fundamentally that's the complain employees have with working in a smoking location, they're endangering themselves, it's not like you can just ignore all the potential jobs that involve smoking, let's face it people need to work. Fundamentally though the logic between any workplace safety law and this one is the same.

" Every once in a while I don't mind one. They're relaxing and I don't mind the flavor, not fond of the smell though so I don't them often.

Nothing is ever sure. You could smoke all day long, then get run over by a bus. Look, no cancer. But if you are a heavy smoker for your whole life, then your chances of getting cancer shoots through the roof. My grandfather died of lung cancer. He got hooked on cigarettes while fighting in WWII, and never got off them. It was a long and painful process. The radiation treatment killed his salivary glands and he could no longer produce saliva. He had to use spray bottle of synthetic saliva all the time all day, but that was only for a couple years before it came back and killed him.
Smoking's pretty disgusting, and you know, has significantly detrimental effects to the health of you and those around you, so I've never smoked in my life and don't plan to. That being said, I don't have anything against folks who do smoke, so long as they do it well away from me (or at least in a really well-ventilated area). Shit smells awful. When I do think about it, I think it's pretty weird how any young folks these days smoke-I mean, with all the negative coverage and cancer-talk and such and such I'd like to think they'd just never start, but I guess I shouldn't underestimate the power of peer-pressure. Or James Bond, for that matter.
Smoking is a filthy habit , I hate the stench , and before you all yell at me , I had to live in a heavy smoking house so I know how bad that shit is , and really why pollute the air even more? Oxygen is good for you , smoke is not.

Well, no, definitely not, but I did unwillingly ended up tasting ashes during a nasty fire close to my grandpa's house, back in my childhood, and I can imagine the ashtray not tasting too differently-- it is ashes we're talking about, afterall ^^

Of course you can do whatever the fuck you want with your life and I respect your right to choose whatever you want; I do not, however, have to respect the actual thing you are choosing or you for doing so though, and in this case it is obvious that making your brain addicted to a substance that has proven links to disease and that you do not need in any other way whatsoever just cause "I like the taste" (and the full list of retarded reasons that come after that one) is just plain stupid, you are stupid for doing it and even more stupid for trying to rationalize it, not to mention you are doing so in a public forum where a good chunk of the active population are kids that may not know any better.

10-14 a day. And i see some say they are not proud of it. well. I am who i am. and i smoke. proud or not. It is what it is. an d i still enjoy each smoke i have.
