If it's raining outside and you are on your way to the local store (or whatever) on foot, what is the best way to aviod getting wet?

I had seen this on Mythbusters, I can't remember which one gets you less wet.

@Bucketdeth: Are you sure it wasn't Brainiac? I remember them doing something about that, and I think that running makes you wetter.

@Bevinsky: Mythbusters did it with a car.

I would run, or not leave the house without my umbrella.

I'm 100% sure Mythbusters did an episode about this and then did the slow motion thing, but I can't for the life of me remember what made you more wet, I think it was running.

@Bucketdeth: True, it was on mytbusters. Just saw the re-run not that long ago..
They talked about how there was no real big difference in walking and letting the rain hit you or running into the raindrops.

@Ahriman22: I remember Mythbusters did it without one aswell.

And neither do I remember which one was the most efficient one..
However, I do remember that it was such a small difference that I myself would prefer running; minimizing the time spend outside :P

It depends on many variables. The speed of walking/running, how heavy the rain is, the distance travelled, the angle the rain is falling at etc. Several scientific formula's have been developed to calculate it - none of which are perfect, but they give a decent idea of it.

Brainiac did it too, but like most things they do.. it was in the least scientific way possible.
There were so many variables with what they did, we'd get better results by having a few people on this website going out while it's raining and going by what they say.

I've seen on national geographic that you'll get just as wet running as walking. The positive thing is that the whole trip takes less time, so I'll run.

I wonder how wet moonwalking would get you? With that kind of gravity... you would be falling... on the rain...

From Mythbusters episode 38 "Mythbusters Revisited 2": SOURCE

REVISITED: You end up drier running in the rain than walking. (From Episode 1

confirmed

When retrying the test in actual rain it was conclusively proven that the running test subject got less wet than the walking test subject. The use of artificial rain in the original test led to a false negative.

In their original tests they found that walking was better, but when they retested the proposed myth, they found running kept you dryer. SOURCE

Walking vs Running depends on how much rain there is, but personally I just say 'fuck it' and use it as an opportunity to do my slow-motion-badass-walking-in-the-rain impression, with trench coat billowing dramatically etc.

@Pie: Yeah, Brainiac is definitely not as good as Mythbusters. I found it amusing that after MB showed up, all these other similar shows started cropping up, like Brainiac, Smash Lab and Prototype This. Just riding the wave of success, I guess.

Lol, when you said MB I thought you meant the mod MB.
Yeah but what you gonna do? I imagine a lot of these will be canceled soon because of poor viewing figures, then again I imagine they get more than something like "TUTUNKHAMUN AND SEX!" (im talking more about smash lab/ prototype this then Braniac, that show still reels in people)

Aforementioned, there are too many factors in rain for the average person to account for. In Mythbusters, the first episode that they did the experiment they used artificial rain, and it was better to walk. Another episode they tested it again, this time in real rain outside, it was better to run.

Wear either a hat or something with a hood.  Using an umbrella in Seattle is just asking for the wind to break it.
