Being fat because you have an actual medical issue is one thing. Being fat because you enjoy eating and don't feel like dieting, then you should probably take a good hard look at your life....and the gaping hole in your floor.

It's Horizon which shows some of the ways fat peoples brains are different to thinner people. And how surgery like bypass surgery actually changes the way the brain works and changes their eating habits for the long run.

Personally I think if you aren't a very athletic person and get past 20 stone, the effects that can have on your brain and body are pretty drastic. It's of course possible to lose weight by your self, but I think at that point it's just as bad as any serious drug addiction and the majority of people will need help to get down to a healthy weight. Also I think bypass surgery is a cost effective way of dealing with people who are morbidly obese. I think in the long run the amount of money saved through hospital expenses outweighs the cost of the bypass surgery. If she continues to live at 33 stone she will end up needing treatment for diabetes, disability costs and other health complications. Not to mention she can't work at 33 stone, and if she loses some weight she can at least work again.

I lost close to 50 pounds; it is possible but not easy. Do not give her money and force the bitch to lose weight by not affording food.

Some people just shouldn't be allowed to breed.

When you hear people talking about welfare states and screwing the system - this is the perfect example. Sad sad sad sad sad.

We only use it for a persons weight in England. If your measuring the weight of something like export etc we use the metric system. Same goes for drinking, we get pints of beer/milk but the majority of measurements that actually matter is in metric.

@haffy: You should read Foucault's Discipline and Punish for some other interesting views on this sort of thing, albeit less scientifically minded, namely the idea of disciplined bodies, the way that our literal shape plays some role in determining our lives.

Other than that, I think I agree with you for the most part. It's easy to assume that because we think people are stupid they have also forfeited their rights to the milk of human kindness. A sweeping generalisation might suggest that people who want her to die in a gutter might correlate with people supporting/defending current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan on humanitarian interventionalist grounds who might want to look at the constancy of their opinions.

What makes me shake my head is that is that she says *dieting is to hard". Well.... if "it's to hard" is your excuse for not doing something and instead want taxpayers to pay the bill then...what the hell?! We actually have that here in Denmark. It's called the Center For Health and Lifestyle. If you're fat and unemployed, you can go on a 6 month course, where you'll be counselled in food and exercise. You also exercise for several hours a day.

Sounds nifty. Wish we had something like that around here.
