Edit: Thread title should really be

Is Halloween dying out in your area?

Maybe dying out is the wrong way to put it, but is the excitement of Halloween kind of fading out? Year after year there are less and less people passing out candies and fewer kids who are going trick-or-treating in my neighbourhood. There are also fewer decorations being put (there are still the exceptions who put their's out in September). Is it the same for you guys?

It just depends in your area. Every year my area is packed with kids passing by.

I don't think it's getting any smaller. The kids in your neighborhood are probably just getting older, so there are fewer trick-or-treaters and less of a reason to decorate. It's the same in my neighborhood, but I don't think it's dying out universally.

Yeah, that's probably it.  It's not because of the holiday in general that's getting less and less celebrated, but more because of the people in my neighborhood and their average age...  Oh, well.

Yeah, but that may simply because we're all getting older.

I think it's still big for kids, I just don't care as much as an eighteen year old.

Nope.  Although I think it's getting kind of lame, you're supposed to dress up as a monster or a zombie!  I see a lot of people dressed up as soldiers or something, not a halloween costume.  Although I have seen someone dressed as a terrorist, lol, not sure if that counts as a halloween costume or not.

Dude...Phillies vs Yankees tonight.  There are more important things that a pagan holiday.

Seriously, no one here has been caring about Halloween.  Everyone's at a bar, club, or a sports party tonight in Philly.  I'm going to take a stab and say NYC is the same.

Science has proven that there's a direct link between the decreasing popularity in Halloween and the increasing number of pedophiles :P.

I don't know about elsewhere, but in my area we had one group of trick-or-treaters two years ago, none last year, and so far this year we're looking at another big zero. It's definitely down from many years ago, but like others have said, I think my neighborhood in general's grown up.

Curfews that didn't exist when I was young, excessive child safety concerns, and an increase in Halloween parties might affect trick-or-treater numbers, as well, but I couldn't say for sure.

It seems like Halloween is a 'bigger' deal in my area this year than previous years.  Just depends on the year I guess.

No.  It probably just seems like it is because you're getting older and aren't trick r treating and stuff anymore.  It happens with all holidays.  Of course that's assuming you're a teenager.

I think so, but it could also be that all of the kids in your area are growing up eliminating the need to put up decorations since fewer people will stop by.. sort of like a self-fulfilling-prophecy.

I see a ton more houses now for that are just decked out with decorations every year for Halloween.  Yet the number of Trick R Treaters  seems to be way down.  So while more houses are getting more decorated there are fewer kids around.

Hmm?  I've stopped partaking in Halloween a while ago and I've been noticing this trend for at least 3 years now.

No. I saw houses with creepy music blasting, strobe lights going off, and smoke bombs in the driveway. Halloween is nowhere near dead in my area.

Oh man, I remember when I used to go to Halloween and it was still crazy like that.  Frequently, there were people making believe they were inanimate big dolls or something near the doors and when kids approached they would jump and scream, scaring/surprising the kids in the process.

I didn't have a single person knock on my door this year. I live in an apartment, but I usually got one or two each year.

Apart from a few fireworks down the road (accompanied by a large bonfire) there's no hint of Halloween where I live. Not even one kid came out for trick or treat and it's midnight now so I definitely don't think anyone is coming around.

Depends on where you are I guess. My street used to be crazy around Halloween. There were always loads of parties , trick or treaters etc. This year however there are no parties, barely any decorations and only one trick or treater. The kids have grown up and moved on here and as a result vibrant Halloweens are a thing of the past. It's kind of sad.

This year especially yes, earlier years we would have like 80-120 kids come to our house, this year there have only been like..30 so far.

It's kind of depressing.

it's dieing here, anyway. hardly anyone gives out candy anymore and you don't see as much kids as before. (before there were like 80 kids, and now there's like 10 - 20 max). kinda sucks, as i wanted to go out and get some candy this year.

You must be crazy. There was more parties in my city for Halloween this year than ever before. Maybe kids are not celebrating as much but the adults definitely are.

Halloween isn't too much of a big thing in the UK, when compared to the US. I only had 1 or 2 trick or treaters appear at my door, and they didn't even have a trick! So, we didn't give them any candy. :-)

I think it's a good thing that Halloween is starting to die out, I never saw much point to it as a kid, and I don't now.

We moved this year and we had 1 group knock at our house last night. So it's definitely less popular in this area, which I think is great cause Halloween is stupid!

Yeah it was weak this year, but there are a lot of other factors at work as well, also I think it has a lot to do with my neighbourhood getting older, theres like no young kids anymore around here, and the dude that usually sets up an insane haunted house and stuff on my street hasn't done it the last few years.

*sigh*...  I'm not talking about myself or what I was experiencing on Halloween.  I'm talking about the neighborhood you live in and if people are active during Halloween by: decorations, parties, number of kids passing Halloween, etc.

*sigh* The neighborhood that I went out around as a kid was made up of kids my age, they are all now roughly the same age as me.  So there is not much activity there anymore.

Well last night was an excuse for myself and a buddy to dress up as Jay and Silent Bob; he played the silent part quite well.  We went to the mall for a bit and hung out in front of the pet store, then went downtown with some friends to get blasted.  Turned out really well, so no I don't think Halloween is dying out.

Not really.  I just see it through a different perspective now in my 20s then when I was a little kid.  Plus, the street I have been growing up on has always been dominated by older couples and no kids, so I always had to go to my aunt and uncle's neighborhoods to go trick-or-treating when I was younger.  Now, I just hang out with friends or do nothing at all.

In my neighbourhood it is absolutely dying out. We only had one small group of kids trick-or-treating yesterday. And I couldn't be happier about this. First off, it's a stupid holiday that I've always hated, and second, we bought lots of sweets anticipating trick-or-treaters and now I get to eat them.
