For those who don't know, Radiohead has kind of erased itself from the internet, getting rid of their social media pages, website, and even tried to do the same with their Wikipedia page. Regardless of your opinion of the actual band, you've got to admit that what their doing is some Kojima-level stuff. It's a complete marketing tactic, but it's reminding me of those things we'd see before the release of a Metal Gear game. Anyone else agree?
Is Radiohead's marketing tactic the closest thing we've seen to something Kojima would do?
there was a time where i would be salivating at every tidbit of radiohead news. they still hold a special place for me, but with their last two albums i've kinda moved on. don't really think it's anything wrong or different they've done; just i've grown and changed. also burial is the best musician out there now so there's that.
(and he won't put out new music. :( curse you dark souls!)
i don't know if i'd compare this exactly to kojima. there always seems to be something mostly serious/ARTSY when radiohead pulls these manuvers, unlike kojima where i think there's a lot more tongue-in-cheekness and sly winking (though radiohead isn't without that either, it's just a lot dryer).
e: don't get me wrong i'll definitely listen to the new one when it comes out; pretty sure i'm obligated to at this point. i'll probably even like it quite a bit; king of limbs wasn't bad by any means, just didn't set my world on fire save a couple tracks.
e2: also pretty sure amnesiac is my favorite of theirs now and probably my go-to album.
If that's the case, then their latest album will be awful and I should just go back to Creep and Paranoid Android, right?
@hayt: Raidohead don't seem like really narrowminded jerks that made one ok thing.
I think a better question would be is it really right to compare these two together at all? I totally get what you're trying to say with this by comparing them for their "marketing" ploys and what not, but I think the end results are that the way these two are received is completely different. Not to mention that now, I feel like most people regard Kojima as a victim of gaming industry dealings while I feel most people see Radiohead as a pretentious group who hate their one good song and do everything in their power to stray away from it by crossing genres and doing weird shit all the time.
That's not to say I don't like Radiohead. I pretty much enjoy each and everyone of their albums because I feel like at the very least I'm going to be getting something different from them instead of something that is the same or similar from a past album like with other music artists, but I do get the general vibe that people dislike them because Thom Yorke seems stuck up.
Meh, artists removing themselves from the spotlight is the oldest PR trick in the book. The key is to do it while you're still relevant. Too bad for Radiohead.
I doubt this is marketing, but probably more just Radiohead (Thom York specifically) being paranoid and tired of the world around them and doing something pretty out of leftfield as a result.
That has kinda been the band's modus operandi since Kid A. Thom York is a weird dude with weird ideas, but the man can sure make some awesome music.
radiohead remains vital, so i'm happy to follow them down whatever contrived rabbit hole they cook up. it's all just a bit of fun- and i like it when acts make an effort to make their album release more of an event.
to anyone who had trouble getting into 'the king of limbs'- i'd suggest checking out this 'from the basement' session- it will give you new perspective, and the performance of 'codex' and 'give up the ghost' are particularly moving.
also burial is the best musician out there now so there's that.
^ this guy gets it. if we want to have a thread about which kojima character most closely resembles will bevan (it's grey fox), i'm into that. also- i presume you've heard this, yes? it might be my fav collabo EVAR.
@jesushammer: And yet we don't see Fish going out of his way to shit on other people like you're doing right now. In fact, he never has. His mistake was always engaging, not starting shit.
No. Radiohead writes decent songs every now and again and Kojima writes hilariously bad anime plots consistently.

@jaypb08: Really though, is Kojima the Radiohead of video games?
Didn't really like it on first listen.
On multiple listens, it seems like a good album opener. It builds up quite nicely to a crescendo.
Well there's a song called Vegetable. It features the lyrics ' i'm not a vegetable' , which implies that some people are vegetables. So i guess that's the closest they get to acknowledging the existence of half naked plant women.
@weapongod30: I was only referring to their marketing tactics, but most (not all) people seemed to have only read the title and instantly replied with their "no, [one or the other] sucks" claims.
lol, I posted a similar thread two years ago http://www.giantbomb.com/hideo-kojima/3040-63395/forums/hideo-kojima-and-thom-yorke-are-the-same-person-1492478/#25
I think Death Grips is a better fit.
Exactly what I was thinking. Death Grips did this kind of thing already a year or two ago but to a way crazier level. Basically pulled a full ouroboros on their fans. It was just comic book silly for a good 10-12 months there. Anthony Fantano aka TheNeedleDrop explained what they did.
Since this is already full of asides i just realized the only new album i heard this year was blackstar. Alas, i am old!!
@jaypb08: People really don't seem to appreciate Kojima's style. It's amazing. It's knowingly over the top. He knows exactly what he's making. And that makes it awesome.
