Not a big fan of Techcrunch but this is doing the rounds and its url is totally not trying to SEO its way up the ladder.

https://techcrunch.com/2019/04/14/trivia-game-of-thrones/

Short version is: Scotty's out, the CEO is still a massive asshole, the company's cofounder died from an overdose in December, and HQ Trivia's overall outlook isn't particularly good. Here's a brief excerpt

Liew pushed for HQ to swap [Colin] Kroll into the CEO spot in September 2018 while moving Yusupov to Chief Creative Officer, which was confirmed despite an HR complaint against Kroll for aggressive management. However, three sources tell TechCrunch that Yusupov pushed that HQ employee to file the complaint against Kroll. As the WSJ reported after Kroll’s death [due to drug overdose in December 2018], that employee later left the startup because they felt that they’d been exploited. “There was definitely what felt like manipulation there, and that’s also why that employee resigned from the company.” one source said. Another source said that staffer “believed Rus used their unhappiness about work to use them as a pawn in his CEO war and not because Rus actually cared about resolving things.”

and the company's latest idea was the following

HQ’s next attempt to revive growth appears to be HQ Editor’s Picks, is described as “a new live show on your phone where our host shows funny viral videos and you decide on who gets paid.” Finally it seems willing to embrace the potential of interactive live video entertainment outside of trivia and puzzles. HQ Editor’s Picks will face an uphill battle, since HQ dropped out of the top 1500 iOS apps last month, according to App Annie. Sensor Tower estimates that HQ saw just 8 percent as many downloads in March 2019 as March 2018.

So who knows where Scotty might pop up next...

Well that doesn't sound like a nightmare anyway...

Aren't the people who made HQ the same people who made Vine? How do they keep making big viral hits and then fucking it up?

The short version (longer version if you read the articles) is that they're unpleasant people with horrible egos that have no business running a business, and also because they've got the right friends at whatever VC firm keeps backing them and/or they went through things like Y Combinator and basically have endless access to funds to keep fucking up again and again.

Is there a big HQ competitor looking to take the spotlight or does this live trivia format die here?

I think HQ Trivia had its moment, and that moment passed late in 2018. The company has a few controversies, but the biggest had to be payouts fro serious players. If you don't pay out, people are NOT going to bother playing your quiz game that has real stakes. But, payout is a issues for current player, not getting new players. What killed getting new players we the fights with hosts. As Lin-Manuel Miranda has pointed out in Hamilton, 'don't throw away your shot', but that is exactly what HQ Trivia did when they just could not fix multiple issues on multiple fronts.

I bet a lot of people also just gave up on trying once they came to terms with how unlikely it actually is for you to win a game. Coupled with the articles that revealed how people were cheating at HQ. The amount of times you start to see the same names pop up as winners, to the point where the host starts to recognize dudes that win on a near daily basis. Also, the frequency of technical issues must have put people off. Once the people around you are not super invested in the show anymore, once that 'HQ moment' with your collegues is gone, everyone just kind of moves on. HQ was a fresh idea, it went viral, people were winning cash, friends were pushing eachother to play it. That's why it became huge, but those viral qualities also make it a product that won't be sustained long-term. Once the hype is gone & it's clear for most how much of a shot they really have , it stops being THE thing. I don't know how much of an impact the behavior of the executives really mattered, that doesn't seem to be a thing the general audience would want to know & change their behavior for.

To be honest it looked bad for them since long before there CEO didn't understand what "off the record" means.
