My friend works at a health and nutrition company in their customer service department. He told me they were hiring and that I should apply. So I did. This was about a month ago. Today they called me and they asked me some basic interview questions over the phone. Such as "Why do you want to work here?", "How are your computer skills?", etc. I felt the interview went great and she told me how much the position pays ($12/hr.) and if I was okay with that (hell yeah I'm okay with it!) then said she would be forwarding my resume to her boss and that her boss would contact me for a second interview in a few days.

Thing is, when I got home and checked my e-mail, I got an automated e-mail from them through JobVite, where I applied from, that said:

"Thank you for giving us the opportunity to consider you for employment. We have reviewed your background and qualifications and have decided to move forward with another qualified candidate at this time. We appreciate your interest and wish you success in your job search."

I looked at the time stamp and my phone log and the email was sent within 2 minutes after I got off the phone with them. Now I'm super confused.... Should I call them back and ask them if the e-mail was a mistake or if they changed their mind?

I'd say call them, but don't be surprised if it isn't a mistake. Employers will never actually tell you, you haven't gotten a job in an interview. They will always say things like "We'll look over your resume, and contact you in about a week or so". It has happened to me more times than I can count.

Reminds me of my last job. They gave the standard "we have a few other interviews lined up but we'll contact you on Monday". I assumed that meant I didn't the job....then I worked there for like 9 years >_>;;;;

A lot of online job sites filter out resumes if they don't have the correct words the employer is looking for. Thats a lot of the reason why your application will get rejected so quickly. By saying she would forward your resume to her boss, she really meant it will get forwarded if it passes their filter. You're more than likely qualified for the job but your resume didn't hit all the words in their filter so you got rejected. Its super lame that this is what the job market has become. I know I've missed out on countless interviews because of filtering.

She probably did not think that you stood out so she scraped your resume, but a fallow up phone call on your part could show her that you actually have some interests in the company.
