What's the last film you saw that you would honestly call a masterpiece.

To be honest I can't think of any brilliant recent films even in the last 10 years.

I really hope video games don't go the way of todays cinema. :(

@Herreno: It was pretty brilliant but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece.

Check out "Synecdoche, New York". It's depressing as hell and is very much a mindfuck.
I've seen it about three times and I like it more and more.
And for what it was, I thought Funny People was a masterpiece in its own right. It had it's funny, but was also a darker take on the life of a stand up comedian.
Sure it had it's flaws, and it got a bit slow towards the end, but I appreciate Judd Apatow's first attempt at a drama, and it was pretty great for that.

Iron Man was kinda tainted by it's second half where it basically abandoned most of the ideas that were explored in the first half of the movie and it just became another robot on robot action.  The Dark Knight was a better film in that it never let go of the ideas the film  makers explored in it. Sure there was action but the action never became the driving force of the movie. The amazing thing about The Dark Knight that its basically a movie about ideas and ideals, probably the most expensive idea based movie ever made. Not to take anything away from Jon Favreau I just think Christopher Nolan is a better film maker.

Anyhow...back on topic, I would say the last film that I consider a true masterpiece was The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly.

Oh yeah, also Children of Men and There Will Be Blood.
An honorable mention goes to Wall-E.

The problem is that you don't know a film's legacy the year after it comes out.  In 20 years, who knows what will be considered the masterpieces of the current era?

Some of these movies probably aren't pretentious enough to be widely considered as masterpieces, but I'll take Gladiator, Sin City, Hero and LOTR (1 and 2 anyways).

Kill Bill Volume 1 was pretty excellent.
I also watched Lucky Number Slevin, which blew my mind, wouldn't say it was a masterpiece though.

Brokeback Mountain, No Country for Old Men, Benjamin Button....and umm, yeah, that's the most recent stuff.

Wrestler was a good Indie film, but the plot got a bit contrived toward the end, especially the whole thing with his daughter; it was too rushed.

Brokeback Mountain is my favorite movie of the decade though.

I agree, this is why I'm hesitant to say The Dark Knight (though I know 98% of you hated it), so I'd say The Big Lebowski. Yeah, it sounds blasphemous, but I love that fuckin' movie.

Haven't seen Children of Men so I don't know about that one but, Wall-E should get more than just an honorable mention.  It was absolutely amazingly awesome to the max.

Most recently, I would have to say Up, or at least the beginning. That was one of the greatest openings of any movie I have ever seen.

A through and through masterpiece would probably be There Will Be Blood in my eyes. That was very ambitious and it was the kind of epic that just floored you for its entire duration. An impressive feat with the remarkable Daniel Day-Lewis.

Up, The Soloist, The Dark Knight were almost masterpieces.

But LOTR is the only series that I honestly thought was perfect or near-perfect.

I'd say a few movies off the top of my head that came out a littler later than recently are
 NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
THE DARK KNIGHT
THERE WILL BE BLOOD
 hmmm

The last film masterpiece is definitely THE HURT LOCKER
just came out so its probably the best example.

I think people are misunderstanding the thread.

It isn't asking "What's a movie that you've seen recently that you liked"
It's "What movie do you think is a masterpiece"

If you're missing obvious sarcasm, then you're the one who deserves to be flagged. Also, TDK is good, great even, but not a masterpiece.

Me too, but I'm never going to tell my friends that. I'm 16 years old and that is just something you don't say if you don't like getting picked on in school.
It feels that people just hate that movie because it's "cool" to hate it.

But the latest film that could be called a masterpiece is Gran turino.

There have been some great films in the past ten years, but off the top of my head, I say Kill Bill (Vol. I and II). It's violence. It's art. It's viort.  It's all good.

Actually, I wasn't TOTALLY sarcastic.  I actually really like that movie, and have yet to run into somebody who actually sat down and watched it without any preconceptions and didn't like it.  And let's be honest here, are we going to remember a pretentious film that exists only to point fingers like Crash or Tokyo Drift?
