Coming from the guy who said The Dark Knight as a legitimate answer, that's hilarious. "
dude, if you are comparing dark knight to tokyo drift you do deserve to be flagged. Its just losers who get upset when anything is extremely popular so they want to be cool and different and be like NO ITS NOT GOOD IT SUCKS GARR! "
If you're missing obvious sarcasm, then you're the one who deserves to be flagged. Also, TDK is good, great even, but not a masterpiece. "

We live in a world where people actually praised Transformers 2. It's never safe to assume that something's obviously sarcastic.

And it's hard for me to take anything seriously from a guy who used to have Zac Efron's mug as his avatar.

I would honestly call There Will Be Blood or Into the Wild (even though a lot of people don't seem to like it as much as I do)... it's such a loose question, as their are many people who are going to simply interpret this as what is your favorite film of the last years. I love Iron Man, and it's a good movie, but stop talking about because it's nowhere near the quality of films that i believe the question is asking for IMO.

Also, while I'm talking about Paul Thomas Anderson, Magnolia came out in the late 90's and I consider that one of my favorite films of all time, and in my opinion that movie is damn close to a masterpiece. So any way, I bet you can tell that I love the movies of Paul Thomas Anderson...

I just watched the documentary "Dear Zachary: A letter to a song about his father" I don't know if I'd call it a masterpiece but it sure is a tear jerker.

I don't think I've ever seen a "masterpiece" movie. Every movie I watch seems to have problems, whether they are with lip-synching, acting, the story, etc. The thing that is most common is for movies to just not be that original. Examples...
Pan's Labyrinth was cool... but, among others, the "doctor" character  was a horrible actor, and even looks at the camera in one scene.

For those of you who said the first Matrix movie, try watching it again now that you're older. I loved that movie when it came out. Thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. Still is cool, but the acting... holy shit.

The Dark Knight was one of the rare movies that were seriously just  cool in my opinion, but I have to think it was just some kind of contrast with Heith Ledger's death that made it that way. Besides that, the story was both confusing and, at least to me, seemed to step on its own toes two or three times.

Gladiator was fuckin sweet. Story was cliche as shit, though.

Idk... don't wanna go on. I want to see The Hurt Locker... not in my town, though...

Oh, wait... A Clockwork Orange. Maybe it was too obvious for me to think of. Recent, though? Nothing.

i wish they could go back and redo the special effects. The same team worked on AVATAR and they've made tremendous advances with special effects for the film. A lot of the stuff already looks seriously dated in those films especially the first one. particularly when they got ridiculous with that elf dude running on giant elephant trunks. it looked SOOO fake i cant believe they left it in.

I was going to say Children Of Men, but Gran Torino wasn't just a great film which struck an emotional cord no movie has done with me in years, but also a a very "sincere" film for a lack of a better word. There was just something brilliantly honest about the acting in that movie and real about the cinematography.

And it was a fantastic send off for an actor with the stature of Clint Eastwood.

There hasn't been a masterpiece "popular cinema" movie since American Beauty and Fight Club other than Sen to chihiro no kamikakushi.

I don't believe in masterpieces, precisely. Every movie has to be observed within its own special little context to be considered as a masterpiece. I mean, "Plan 9 from Outer Space" is Ed Wood's masterpiece-- in that it completely encapsulates everything about his non-porn career.

And The Dark Knight is, ostensibly, a masterpiece in the realm of superhero films (but certainly not in terms of cinema as a whole; too many plot holes)

But, if a masterpiece can be a movie one has seen and cannot think of a single bad thing to say about it, then I suppose I can say that the "The 'Burbs" is a masterpiece of sorts. It's a near-perfect comedy, in my opinion.

I don't think either of those movies can be considered masterpieces. Fight Club is grossly overrated (king like TDK) and American Beauty has the bag scene in it. I swear to God, I would love that movie if not for that scene.

None would be "Masterpieces" because most contain certain flaws that hinder them from obtaining the title (I.E. Christian Bails acting in Dark Night *WHERE IS HE* lol scary voice. Ha fanboys). But there have been some in my opinion that have come close.  All this is just my opinion.

V for Vendetta: For its brilliant script and slick sense of style. Great translation from the Graphic Novel.
Sin City: For it's groundbreaking style and pacing. Bruce Willis's monologues and acting for that matter leave a little to be desired.
Donny Darko: Few Movies break through with such originality and strong mythology. Great acting, great story, and just a great movie to ponder over.

Wha... Matrix? Look, the Matrix is awesome, it's not a masterpiece. There's a clear distinction. Besides, it's more than 10 years since it's theatrical release, so it wouldn't count anyway.

Return of the King was really good, I also really liked No Country For Old Men. Kill Bill vol. 1 could be counted as a masterpiece in certain circles, not so much with vol. 2. The Departed was also good, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it a masterpiece. There have been plenty of great movies over the last few years, the problem is you're getting more now because the actors receive better training, directors aren't really tied to specific studios and special effects are getting better. The standards have gotten higher, so you're less inclined to call a movie a masterpiece. I also think you have to wait a while before you can call something a masterpiece, to see if it stands the test of time.

Yeah, people praised Transformers 2, but this is obviously a joke. Particularly obvious seeing as it's always mentioned on the Bombcast etc. With a name like Delta_Ass, people are meant to take you seriously?

True, though I think what it does the best is break down the barrier of comic book movies and make people realise they aren't a genre to themselves and they can be every bit as dramatic as a 'serious' movie, though I think people should have realised that with Spider-Man 2.

For something to be considered a masterpiece in my book it needs to have artistic value as well as story and character.  Like art, it needs to challenge my opinion of what a film should be like.  I don't mean in a pretentious "this is art" way, but in a more basic, dare I say, traditional way.  I think that Wall-E's look and approach to character is unique and qualifies, as did Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Schindler's List.

Instead of The Dark Knight, which is a "great movie" but not art, I submit Nolan's previous work, "Momento" as a better choice for a masterpiece.  It spins the idea of story on its tail and interweaves an engaging story with compelling characters.

I just have one thing to say here, The Dark Knight was a stupid movie, Christian bale talks as if his nose is plugged and full of snots, the only have cool part was The Joker, it was an average action movie.

Ok now that is out the way, the last movie I thought was a masterpiece would probably be, Gran Torino, that was a fucking amazing movie, unlike bullshit Batman.

Crash. I loved that movie to death and can still watch it multiple times with the same reactions as the first. I cry at the same moments (or at least choke up) and still laugh out loud when Ludacris' character laments "You don't like hockey! You just say you do to piss me off!"

Babel. This is basically similar to Crash only with a much more varied cast as it jumps from different countries and cultures to show how they are all connected.

There have been a lot of amazing films, but as far as masterpieces go, The Matrix is the latest one. I re-watched it this morning, for the first time in like 5-6 years and its practically flawless. You name it: story, action, memorable characters, originality - all there. I think I'm going to watch it again right now.

I mean, I saw stuff like There Will Be Blood, Babel, Million Dollar Baby and most of the Oscar or Golden Globe nominees, but they don't really measure up. I'm serious, go re-watch The Matrix if you think I'm crazy.

Too bad everything else Matrix related is kind of ass.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon brought over Wuxia films to the West. The cinematography was simply gorgeous. It also raised the bar for choreography in Wuxia films.

I agree with There Will Be Blood. Some of the greatest acting I've seen in my experiences with movies. Daniel Day Lewis became so well respected in my eyes. Also, Brokeback Mountain. Although I think that Heath did a great job as the Joker, in my opinion Brokeback Mountain was his magnum opus. Maybe just because it hits home for me, but I dunno.

Lost In Translation, There Will Be Blood, Magnolia (pretentious yes, but still), The Matrix, The Dark Knight.
