Hey guys, the new episode of the latest season of Doctor Who will be airing real soon and I find myself intrigued with the cliff hanger that aired last week. While I haven't been the biggest fan of mean old, serious, Peter Capaladi's portrayal of the Doctor (even though I'm a huge fan of his other work), I can't help but love where the first episode is heading. Speaking of the first episode, who else is super thrilled Missy made an appearance? I'd actually be okay if Missy became a permanent companion for the Doctor. Can you imagine the dynamics of a companion who is also out to get you as well?
Let's talk about the latest season of Doctor Who (Spoilers)
Won't be watching until the whole season is finished, but so far I've really liked Capaldi's Doctor, mostly because it has a similar feeling to Jon Pertwee's where companions are more like students than possible love interests. For the record, I still like Tennant and Smith more, but this is one area that I hope Who continues its path. As for the episode, I'm glad Missy seems to be back; God, I was happy when she was first revealed. I actually like Gomez more than Simm.
Furthermore, I usually don't like DW forums like this considering how the ones I know of turned out. There's so much bitter rivalry between fans of different aspects of the show that I just eventually tapped out.
Person A: "Tennant is the best Doctor, I can't believe they replaced him with Smith. How old is he, like twelve? At least we don't have Davies around to write such nonsense stories. Moffat is God!"
Person B: Tennant is Shite. Eccleston should have stuck around for all those seasons. Moffat couldn't write a story without over-dramatization and lovey-dovey crap to save his life. RIP RTD" (actually seen that last one before).
Sorry, but this is me venting. Honestly, I think all modern Doctors bring their own charm and aren't any better or worse than the others. As for writing, there's pretty much an equal amount of boring/dumb episodes per season (about 2-3), so I just laugh at them and don't judge past that.
God, I'm glad it's Doctor season again. I barely watch any TV shows anymore besides what I already know, so DW is one of the only constant, new cool things I have in media right now.
First time that i can remember they kicked off a new season with so much drama going on. I'm still on the fence about missy, why not just keep the name as the master? And wasn't she just the main villain last season? lol. At first i thought Davies took back over again the way it kicked off so dark
@poobumbutt: No worries man, I've started a few doctor who threads on these forums and most of them feel chillaxed. So far Peter Capaldi hasn't done it for me in the role but was a huge fan of the, "Thick of it" so I'm hoping I'll eventually warm up to him. So far Missy is the character that is compelling me to continue forward.
I like Capaldi a lot but damn the writing is still a mess! They focus a lot on cool looking shots or witty comebacks designed entirely for gifs which makes it feel disjointed. Even with all the crazy stuff that happens in c-list anime there's a least an attempt at some cohesiveness. Comparing to Sherlock which also has the tumblr gif moments ( Sherlock's fan club like the Doctors just screams to me of what Gatiss thinks the internet and specifically Tumblr is).
That said I keep watching because at times it gets so close to being good ( and I don't begrudge anyone who is able to enjoy it). The fact this season started off referencing Genesis of the Darleks was really neat, and I dig a bit more of an involved use of Missy.
I think any good faith I had for the show went out the window when they decided to replace the sonic screwdriver with sunglasses. It's almost like Moffat forgot he already had done Clara in a dalek , so he did it again for good measure. Oh man...
Can I just revive this thread and ping @i_stay_puft, because god damn this season has been soooo good! I really think that doing mostly two parters this season, has helped the show's story pacing a lot.
Personally I think this is the strongest season since Moffat took over as show-runner... Might actual be the best since the revival... (But it might just be that new car smell, so I'm gonna judge that at a later time).
Also I think last week's episode: "Heaven Sent", might be one of my favorite episodes ever in the show.
@Gnubberen: by all means man. I'm a few episodes behind and this seasons been hit and miss so far for myself with the two parters. Will catch up though just to catch how Jenna louise coleman takes her final bow out of the show.
Best season in years, heaven sent may be the best episode ever. Finally delivering on what blink and the library episodes promised Moffats run would be like.
About to watch the final episode but I must say I'm expecting Moffat to pull another one out of his arse. Here we Gooooo!!!
I really liked this season as a whole and and it went to some really dark places which was cool. My only problem is that the storyline's are getting more and more convoluted as they go which leads me to just give up trying to understand what's happening and enjoy the ride. For instance in Heaven Sent wasn't every room supposed to revert back to it's original form each time, why was room 12 not a part of that? It was probably explained somewhere in that episode but I was already kinda bored at that point.
Clara really growed on me as a character this season too and it's probably the only season where she hasn't just been annoying in every episode.
A writing problem that is bothering me about the last episode:
They made the Doctor being trapped for billions of years into a big deal (based on Clara's reaction to that reveal) and used it to further vilify the time lords. While the doctor may have technically been trapped that long, he has 0 memory of it. At worse he was has the memory of being there for a day or two. So it wasn't very torturous as the writers played it out to be. Did they really think this through when referencing it?

Nope in heaven sent there is a part where he says he will remember all of it. Watch again. He says something to effect of "Oh now i remember, why do i only remember now? Why does it always have to be me, why can't i just lose?" And he says something like "If i do this I'll remember all of it" I would have to watch it again to say 100% what he says, but it is something to that effect.
@caska from my understanding room 12 is the onlu one that changes, remember its blocked by a door that goes back each time he tells a secret
While I feel like the final was maybe a bit pointless, I still enjoyed it and I still think that this is Moffat's strongest season. The only episode I didn't like at all was "Sleep no more" (sleep dust monster is suuuuuper dumb even for doctor who). I really like the changes they made to Capaldi's doctor... A bit less grumpy with a bit more "I don't give a fuck" attitude.
One thing about the end of Heaven Sent I was thinking about: Suppose Ashildr/Me somehow handed off the confession dial to the time lords. Why on earth would they just leave it out in the desert instead of keeping it in a safe place/prison, when they wanted to capture The Doctor?
I though the season was a little up-and-down but my initial impression from the finale (and the two episodes leading in to it) is so positive that I'm willing to forgive it. I really loved the finale.
The "happy ending" that they gave Clara worked for me because it was bittersweet (she's too duty-bound to cheat death forever) and she deserved something better than just a grisly death. She WAS the companion for the 50th after all, even though I don't feel like the writers really figured her out until last season. This gives her a better out without really undermining the effect of "Face the Raven".
I understand the complaints about lack of Gallifrey in the episode, but I didn't mind so much. This was a personal story with a big background. The Doctor was too focused to get lost in the politics of the Time Lords. Plus any time we visit Gallifrey we flirt with letting the TV budget of the show become really very obvious. I felt like we got just enough, and by limiting it everything really looked impressive and coherent. Boy have things changed for television-level CGI since the 9th Doctor.
Again, initial impressions. But I enjoyed it a lot. Capaldi has really come to own the role, he might be my favorite Doctor. I hope he stays on longer than the expected three seasons.
