Limewire, the peer-to-peer file sharing service, heard it’s death knell today when it finally settled with the major labels at $105 million.

If that sounds like a lot of money, you should think the Limewire owners lucky - the labels originally wanted more than $1.4 billion in damages.

A judge ordered the closure of the service last year after the US record industry blamed Limewire for a 52% slump in music sales. However, CMU report that critics said this was misleading, arguing that CD ripping and the labels missing an opportunity with Napster was also to blame. There is also suggestive evidence that the ability to buy single tracks rather than full albums affected overall music revenue.

Despite this, the labels consider the death of Limewire a huge victory.

"We are pleased to have reached a large monetary settlement following the court’s finding that both LimeWire and its founder Mark Gorton personally liable for copyright infringement," said RIAA Chairman and CEOMitch Bainwol in a statement.

He continued: "LimeWire wreaked enormous damage on the music community, helping contribute to thousands of lost jobs and fewer opportunities for aspiring artists … This hard fought victory is reason for celebration by the entire music community, its fans and the legal services that play by the rules."

I thought the music labels aren't getting a dime of this.  All of the winnings are going to the RIAA.

Pirating music is still cool?  When music labels were ridiculously overcharging for music, fine, but there's no excuse now.

We should be pirating eBooks now.  Digital books shouldn't cost twice as much as hardcover dead tree versions.

@InternetCrab: Wasn't it just confirmed that Limewire's 105Million payment was a settlement (ie they weren't forced at all) and that settlement was payed to the RIAA who are not forwarding said payment to ANY artists, labels or recording studios but rather using said payment to fund further cases.  This is a win for nobody but arsehole lawyers.

People who use Limewire or Torrents for anything other than porn need to get a life.
Good job labels. I was wondering how long it would take you to take down Limewire.

It's not about the moral high ground.  It's about what's legal, and about what ultimately benefits the people that produced and released the music.

I don't pirate either but dude, c'mon, think for yourself. If your sole reason for disliking something is because it's illegal then perhaps you should join an orwellian group and start a political party that 'knows whats best' for everyone.

it's a nice sentiment but if you were really dedicated you'd be on sony bgm's lawn demanding their closure every single morning. they take a hefty fucking majority of the profits away from the people who actually made the music.

Limewire was the bane of the music industry. I'm glad its gone.

Yes; always uphold the law, no matter what.
"If a law is unjust, a man is not only right to disobey it, he is obligated to do so." -Thomas Jefferson

While this current situation is by no means unjust (I admit to pirating on very rare occasions but if I like a band, $15 for a CD is nothing), to uphold an unjust law is not only foolish it's insanity.

While all true, it's ignorant to believe that piracy will ever go away. There will always be people with more time than money.

I've skimmed through this thread and it seems like half of the people here have an anti-label sentiment and half don't.  I don't really understand the anti-label view.  Without labels bands and artists can't continue to make a living doing what they do.  Yes, they make most of their money through concerts but those concerts are pushed by labels.  Those concerts don't get exposure without websites funded by labels, CDs created by funds from labels and just overall support from labels.

Now I'm not one to say "here is totally a reason that pirating is almost OK", but...

it almost is. The music industry failed to evolve with the times and is paying the price. Independence is the way to go, Radiohead saw that!

And then they released a really weird album!

@Toms115: Uh, no.

When labels take a cut, the artist still receives money in the end.

By stealing, you are ensuring that no one is receiving any money at all.
