Haven't bought music whether it be iTunes or physical copy from a major label in a long ass time.  The only MP3s/cds I buy are from independent artists directly from their websites or iTunes.  I take the time to research, and if there's a label involved i just steal the shit.  I do feel a little sorry for the artist, but there's no way a major label is ever going to get another penny of my money.

Why is it not ok to torrent music, but perfectly fine to torrent pornography?
Porn stars aren't real people.

@MordeaniisChaos: Your over looking one thing. All the while you and the other warriors are happy to pay there wages those that do steal continue to reap the benefits. For free. So really by paying for music, you are encouraging people to pirate. Shame on you.edit: Also I'm seeing no indication of the music industry being "fucked over" or going down the toilet or whatever. I'm listening to more music now than i ever have done.

1. piracy isn't theft. 2. the difference between nothing and the amount a major label leaves you with is negligible enough to not even exist.
Copyright Infringement is theft
no it isn't, it's an infringement of copyrights. i'm not debating whether or not it's immoral, i'm simply saying that piracy isn't theft.

And your so hilariously wrong on that point that it's amazing you believe it with such conviction.

What do the pirates of the high seas do?  They go out on their boats and steal shit from other boats.

What do internet pirates do?  They go online and steal shit.
Err, you realise under the eyes of the law software "piracy" isn't actually piracy, right? It's a PR term to villianize copyright infringement.

It's OK to torrent the pornography that is not made professionally because it is not licensed. Same with music that isn't licensed. But a larger percentage of pornography is amateur pornography that has no license or label.

This. It seems like exactly the same thing to me.

But see...you used the "moral highground" argument. Why is it ok to torrent someones hard work just because it isn't licensed? In the moral sense it's the exact same thing.

If you're under the belief that music has progressed in any sort of positive manner because people were getting more money for it, you'd be wrong.  If anything, the seemingly easy amount of money that can be gained has just made everyone and their sister think they can sing, or have musical talent.

Regardless, quality music can and will always be made due to people's passion for music, not because millions of dollars were thrown at some shit groups feet like the Black Eyed Peas.

So all this "piracy killing the industry" BS can go fuck it's self.  If killing the industry means they don't have as much money for the extensive studio sessions where 40 technicians spend hours and hours auto tuning some marketable piece of meat into something resembling a passable singer, or said "artist" (i use that loosely) can't live in their multimillion dollar mansion, then I'm all the happier.

Here's a radical idea:  the pointless bickering would stop if copyright law was finally fixed to stop copyrights and make music/books/tv/movies public domain after 20 years.  Instead, every time a new technology is released: reel to reel, 8 track, cassette, cd, mp3 / vhs, dvd, blu ray, consumers are forced  to buy essentially the same product over and over.  If the music/movie was public domain, you'd be able to pick it up for $1-2,  just enough to cover the actual cost of burning and packaging the item.

I make music, I know it's a pain in the ass recording, mixing and mastering, so all I can say to people who try to get it for free is.....go fuck yourself.
i also make music, and i understand the mundane nature of mixing and mastering, but i give mine away for free. it cost next to nothing to make.

@TheSeductiveMoose: I'm not arguing that.  I'm arguing against his point that piracy isn't theft.

Theft is defined as the taking of property that deprives the owner of that property.
Internet piracy does not do that.
If someone is pirating your stuff you wouldn't even know unless you went out of your way to look for it.

This is a story about a band that believed they weren't making any money because of piracy, they were wrong.

Pirating music is still cool?  When music labels were ridiculously overcharging for music, fine, but there's no excuse now.
We should be pirating eBooks now.  Digital books shouldn't cost twice as much as hardcover dead tree versions.
Well put.

I mean, most of the shit I download is from 1987 and is out of print, or has the rights being held by a dead-in-the-water label that stopped existing a decade ago. Yeah, this argument doesn't really concern me. I'm not going to get fined because I pirated Deathwish's first album.
