I've been listening to a lot of Modeselektor recently. They're electronic, but they also have a few songs with Thom Yorke which are a completely different tone.
Check out the Mickey Mouse Operation album by Little People.
Also look up AERIAL2012, any of their albums.
I like checking user playlists that iTunes provides on artist and album pages. They usually bring me to something else I'll find interesting.
Let the Submersible Hamster Podcast carry you away into New Music Land: http://www.hamsteralliance.com/submersible/
There are 28 episodes in the back catalog, which I'm sure will have a high concentration of bands you've never heard of.
Check out a guy named Matthew Good, he's an alternative-rock artist from Vancouver Canada, been around for 15-ish years. Kinda well known in Canada but basically unheard of anywhere else. His album Avalanche from 2003 is pretty damn awesome, or if you want something a little more mainsteam his album Beautiful Midnight from 1999 is really good too. He used to sing with Matthew Good Band but the band split up in 2001 and now he just goes as Matthew Good. Here's Youtube links to some of his songs.
Weapon
Carmelina
Apparitions

K'Naan.
He was born in Somalia, and mainly raps about issues taking place there. Most of his songs are rap, but there's a couple that I'd call rock. I just bought his newest album today, Troubador. One of his songs, Bang Bang, can be found for free on the iTunes Single of the Week.
-The Aggrolites
-Operation Ivy
-Lagwagon
-The Descendants
-The Pilfers
-Simple Citizens
Simple Citizens are amazing. I'm not even sure if they're signed yet but its some awesome stuff.
hip-hop :
El-P (aka El-Producto)
Aesop Rock
Cannibal Ox
Hieroglyphics
metal:
Blotted Science (all instrumental)
Spastic Ink (mostly instrumental)
Necrophagist
Gorod
Streetlight Manifesto- Ska Punk, they have some of the most unique and great sounding songs I've ever heard. They know how to make somebody tap their feet and sing along, without being shallow or repetative. They're amazing.

Against Me! - Punk, kinda, but you just have to listen to them. Very emotional, but still badass songs. Just listen, you won't regret it. Or you might hate the guys voice. Either way....
