Hey gang,

So, like many of you, I'm out of work at the moment. Long story short, I'm supposed to be moving to Japan to teach English with the JET Programme. Now, obviously, things have gone a bit weird in the world, right? Anyway, my departure date has been pushed back. I was meant to go in September, which got pushed to January, and now the Japanese have closed their borders till Jan 31st, so I won't be going till at LEAST then. I highly suspect it could even be up to April, and at the WORST scenario, as late as September

Now, I don't need to tell you that having no income at the moment is very tricky.

I've applied for Universal Credit in the UK (I think you call it 'Welfare' in the States) and I hope they'll get onto that soon. If I get that, and I SHOULD, because I meet all the requirements, that should cover my rent, just.

However, I obviously need other income too!

Earlier tonight, I signed up to two tutoring websites (Tutorful and Tutorhunt), which will hopefully put me into contact with students from all over the UK who need help with being tutored, basically.

To give you an idea of my qualifications, or specialisms- I have ten years in UK education as both a teacher and a TA. I'm also very good at writing and proof reading long form essays etc

Does anyone have any ideas that I might not have thought of to secure some money? I'm open to all ideas. I'd obviously like to use my specialist subjects to my advantage if I can, but if anyone has any good ideas, please let me know

Thanks!

You could look into speaking English on the phone with non-native speakers. It might be good practice for when you're actually over there and teaching. I don't know how much traction you'll get with Japanese speakers, but several of my co-workers in Korea would do it for fluency practice, and I'm pretty sure it's popular in China as well. This is just one website I found for it, but I know some people look around on social media for people interested as well.

Best of luck. I'd definitely prepare for the long haul because even countries like Korea, that are still letting foreigners in, are really strict and their quarantine rules would make the situation EXTREMELY difficult to navigate.

As it’s only short term I’m pretty sure Tesco are hiring up and down the country, would mean you wouldn’t have to claim from the government aswell as a plus.

I hate to make this about myself, but there was that one forum about how Covid has hit people, and for me in March of 2020, I had lost my job. I was initially laid off, but then I got an email from a board member five months later saying they won't be having me back. Last month though, I was told no one had known that the one board person had let me go, and everyone was angry, so they just recently gave me back my job and gave me a raise to go with it and a letter saying sorry. I had originally said no to coming back, but ultimately I decided to return. I am relieved to be back.
